This 2001 book was written by Linda Chapman, who did several books in the Animal Ark Universe, including a couple in this series. In the UK, it was published by Hodder, and in America it was published by Scholastic. We are now halfway through the Little Animal Ark series.

It's an okay book. A relaxing read for adults. Perhaps it would be challenging for four year olds, but there's nothing difficult in terms of vocabulary or heavy concepts. This ain't Chinese algebra, folks -- it's about a pony scheduled to give rides at an upcoming birthday party.

I have to admit, when I first saw the title, I had a fleeting notion that this would be about a pony that loved to party. You thought Hunter S. Thompson was a party animal -- Sparky the Pony is here! HIDE YOUR WIMMIN AND YOUR WEED.

But no, of course, no drugs, no human nudity, no fear and loathing ... not even rock and roll.

Yeah, I'm not exactly the target audience. But seriously, this was a gentle, relaxing read, with a really nice pony protagonist. Although his color is only referred to as brown, Andy Ellis portrays him as a chestnut with a pale mane and tail. Actually, in the horse world, "brown" means the brown next to black. Google it. It's complicated. More complicated than this target audience could handle, I guess.

I'm not entirely sold on the concept that horses and ponies love to work. They certainly seem to like structure and predictability. Some seem to thrive on human attention, while others just don't give a toss.
