Lessons From Failures Of Concrete Structures, American Concrete Institute Monograph No. 1, American Concrete Institute Monograph Serirs, ACI Monograph No. 1
"Since its founding in 1905, on of the primary objectives of the American Concrete Institute has been to gather and disseminate information about the properties and uses of plain and reinforced concrete and their constituent materials. ACI Committee 103, Monographs, was organized to expedite the dissemination of knowledge in specialized areas of the concrete field through publication of a series of monographs. The committee, which began as a task group of the Technical Activities Committee in 1960, was officially designated Committee 103 in 1963. It is anticipated that monograph manuscripts will be prepared by highly qualified authorities in the several fields to be treated. Technical content of the monographs will reflect the thinking and experience of the writers, and not necessarily that of Committee 103. Each monograph within the series will develop a thorough understanding of the subject and will summarize the principal elements of what should be known about a specific subject to use concrete to best advantage. Free from the space limitations necessary for an ACI Journal, paper, the monograph writers will be able to provide a more thorough and complete treatment of their subject. These monographs are tailored neither for the uninformed layman nor for the well-informed few. Rather it is intended that these publications be of maximum value to the practicing engineer, contractor, advanced student, and others having a working knowledge of concrete and its properties. The first manuscript in this continuing series is on a subject of unusually broad interest. It comes at a time when the building industry is expanding at an increasing rate and is looking to the past for lessons and to the future for greater progress. In the preparation of this monograph Committee 103 and the author wish to give special acknowledgement to M. K. Hurd for the editorial treatment and to Robert C. Baldwin for literature research on the examples presented." [foreword by ACI Committee 103]
