i was super disappointed with the ending to ‘anatomy,’ so no one is more happy than me that this follow up installment was written. i think it was desperately needed as hazel and jacks story deserved closure.
that being said, i think this could have done better as a #1.5 novella instead of a full-length #2 sequel. the purpose of this, to me, is to answer everything that was left unsaid at the end of the first book. nothing else really matters, thus becoming filler.
but its really easy-to-read filler. i raced through this because of how nicely the writing flows and how entertaining the content is (even if its not wholly necessary). so all in all, this is a very entertaining sequel and an ending the story needed.

Oh boy! I have been eagerly awaiting the release of the second book in this series, wondering what happened to Jack and hoping he would find a way to survive. That cliffhanger left me with a heartache!
Let me begin my review by praising the stunning cover of this book. It follows the same concept as the first book but is even more amazing. Just like its magical cover, the second book tightly grips you, hooking you with its action-packed and riveting storyline.
Hazel Sinnett resides at her family's mansion, Hawthorden, with her cook, who is expecting, and the cook's husband. Abandoned by her family and considered a disgrace for behaving like a man in order to become an anatomist at the academy and study medicine, Hazel suffers from grief and desperately misses Jack, the love of her life. Jack was unfairly charged with a death sentence and hanged, despite Hazel giving him a tincture that may have granted him immortality. But he has yet to reach out to her. Is he dead or alive? Dr. Beecham, who blamed Jack, fled the country and may still be alive and in hiding.
Wrongly accused of murder and betrayed by one of her patients, Hazel finds herself imprisoned, awaiting her death sentence. However, to her surprise, instead of being hanged, she is put into a carriage bound for England, where she is to serve as a practitioner and heal Princess Charlotte, who has been suffering from Roman fever.
Hazel believes that after recovering from Roman fever, it is unlikely to suffer from the same ailment again. She suspects that Princess Charlotte might be afflicted with an undiagnosed disease. If Hazel fails to treat her properly and uncover the true cause of her illness, she will be sent back to jail, endangering her family's lives.
While she still mourns Jack's absence, Hazel encounters Simon, a kind-hearted and flirtatious Swedish doctor who deeply respects her opinions. Simon seeks her assistance in treating the king, who is plagued by madness. Hazel also becomes a unique member of a very special community called the Companions of Death, which includes famous individuals such as Lord Byron and Voltaire. The group is led by Marie-Anne Lavoisier, a renowned chemist. Their meetings evoke memories of the famous scene from Woody Allen's movie "Midnight in Paris," where various renowned artists gather in a bar, engaging in conversation and revelry.
As Hazel spends more time as a member of this special group, she discovers that nothing is as it seems. A love triangle and life-threatening situations make her life even more complex than ever before. She realizes she must make significant choices for her own life and the well-being of her loved ones.
Overall, I found it difficult to put this book down. It exceeded my expectations and was even better than the first book. The characters, pacing of the story, and the thought-provoking exploration of feminism were all superbly developed. I wholeheartedly give this book 5 immortality stars!

Immortality is the second book in Dana Schwart's YA-Gothic Fantasy Romance The Anatomy Duology.
First, let's get the most obvious thing out of the way. This cover is absolutely stunning and the two novels together...
They're perfection. They also fit this story nicely. These books follow Hazel Sinnett, who after the tumultuous events of Anatomy: A Love Story finds herself on her own.
Not one to give up in the face of adversity, however, Hazel continues to plug along, doing what she does best; learning about human anatomy, while also putting her knowledge to good use helping the underprivileged of Edinburgh.
When a young woman comes to Hazel, scared and distressed, she never even considers turning the sick woman away, even though the procedure she requests is against the law.
Unfortunately for Hazel, her efforts that day don't go unnoticed and she is arrested and imprisoned. The punishment, possibly execution. This is no joke.
Just when Hazel thinks it's the end of the road for her, a confounding message arrives that saves her skin. She has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly daughter of King George IV.
Before she knows it, Hazel is freed from prison and transported to the Palace, where she must befriend the Princess, a task easier said than done, and figure out just what the heck is wrong with her.
As Hazel becomes more involved with the royal court, it's clear to her that something is afoot. If she can't figure out what it is, and soon, there could be a lot more than just her life at stake. We have a mystery on our hands!
Immortality is a very solid sequel. Sometimes it can be difficult with a second book to create the same magic as the first, but I think Schwartz pulled it off overall.
I was delighted from the get-go to be back with Hazel. I really grew to love her over the course of the first book and she was sticking true to herself in this follow-up.
As a girl who goes against the grain of what family and society expect of her, Hazel's personality rings true and is quite intriguing. I love how she never backed down, even when her family basically shunned her. She took risks and although doesn't live the most extravagant lifestyle, I think she's able to sleep pretty comfortably at night.
I was sorry to see her get into a bit of a pickle early on in this one, but it was fun watching how she got out of it. Of course it was more pure luck and her reputation than anything else, but we'll take what we can get.
I also liked her immersion in the royal court. There were definitely some interesting characters flitting about around there and as expected, a ton of royal drama.
While this one didn't feel as dark and gothic to me, mainly due to the different road the plot went down, it was still well done as far as the atmosphere and overall vibe.
I also missed the dynamic we had between Hazel and Jack in the first one. As they were getting to know one another, the pining and tension was fantastic and you really couldn't have that same thing here. I missed it, but obviously understand why that couldn't be a part of this continuation.
However, we do get another intriguing man, a doctor no less, circling around Hazel like a bee to honey, so that definitely brought some more cute fun.
I've enjoyed watching Hazel grow over the course of this story, as she became even more committed to her vocation, in spite of the contempt, disrespect and disregard she received from most of her male peers.
I also enjoyed the light fantastical elements sprinkled throughout the duology, the idea of the immortality serum; to learn more, you'll have to read the book, by the way.

This was a great sequel to Anatomy and it offered up a bunch of new characters - just as good as book one if not better, never repetitive or dull.
Can't go into too much depth here without spoiling book 1. So I'll just say this is an amazing duet, very well written and easily one of my favorites of the year.

ultimately, the second instalment of the duology was underwhelming, to say the least.
ive seen several reviews state they wish Hazel’s story had ended in Anatomy and im inclined to say i agree. despite the ending being somewhat tragic in the first book, a note of hope really lingered along with the ambiguous ending that would have worked perfectly for the gothic tone Schwartz was trying to achieve.
it was definitely easy to read, quick and fluid, but it really had very little substance to it.
the book felt a bit detached and lacked the emotional undercurrent the first book had. several side plots packed more of an emotional punch than Hazel’s main story— like the incident with Florence or the story of Charlotte. but the book felt a bit shallow and rushed, with not a lot happening until the last 30%. it was incredibly slow on the uptake, dragging out aspects of the story that felt unnecessary and amounted to nothing. so, with everything occurring in the final third meant the ending felt rushed and incomplete. i just feel rather underwhelmed and unsatisfied, unfortunately.
so pacing wise, it was fast but plot wise is was slow.
especially with the romance. the romance in book one was achingly beautiful, so convincing and gut-wrenching... here it felt like an after thought. i can’t talk too much about it without spoilers, so all i will say it didn’t satisfy me, it didn’t give me what i was promised from the first book.
but on the plus side, i really appreciate the historicism— i adore all of the references and the eye for detail Schwartz has in her books. truly a phenomenal elegance that just adds a touch of realism to the story. it’s what initially drew me in and made me love the first book.
and as a literature student with a love for historicism, Schwartz’s nods to Enlightenment vs Romanticism were so fascinating— the clash between rationale and logic against nostalgia and the sublime, with the undercurrent of the gothic that really underpinned early 19th century British literature. the details of figures i admire so much, along with others that i like a lot less well really fun to read, bringing so many people to life in a way id never read before.
while this book was beautifully crafted, it lacked feeling and emotion more than anything. i can see there’s probably potential for a third book but i hope Schwartz just leaves the story here. honestly, i feel like Anatomy should have been left as a standalone despite how tragic the ending was, it was incredibly moving with a hint of hope to make you feel satisfied with the ending. this book just... didn’t add much to the pre-existing narrative unfortunately.
Hazel Sinnet is a forced to be reckoned with though. her character is just wonderful and ultimately why this is a settled three stars for me.

So, remember how I loved Anatomy? Well, this sequel somehow managed to be even better. It’s rare to find a follow-up that not only matches the magic of book one but elevates it entirely. But Dana did just that. 👑🕯️💌

After thoroughly enjoying last year’s release of Anatomy: A Love Story, I was anxious to pick up this sequel once I learned that book one’s ending was, in fact, not the ending at all. While this installment takes a somewhat different route plot wise, I still enjoyed reading it and being immersed in this familiar world once again. This book isn’t as gory as book one, which was a real shame, but I understand why the author chose to go the route that she did. There is a love triangle introduced here, and that made my heart anxious because of my love of Jack in the first book, but I think it was well done and felt content with how things wrapped up in the end. If you enjoyed part one of the Anatomy duology, I think it’s worth the read to continue on with book 2.

After thoroughly enjoying last year’s release of Anatomy: A Love Story, I was anxious to pick up this sequel once I learned that book one’s ending was, in fact, not the ending at all. While this installment takes a somewhat different route plot wise, I still enjoyed reading it and being immersed in this familiar world once again. This book isn’t as gory as book one, which was a real shame, but I understand why the author chose to go the route that she did. There is a love triangle introduced here, and that made my heart anxious because of my love of Jack in the first book, but I think it was well done and felt content with how things wrapped up in the end. If you enjoyed part one of the Anatomy duology, I think it’s worth the read to continue on with book 2.

Alrighty, this re-read did not go as good as I thought it would. So I'm going to list things I liked and disliked about this book.
What I disliked:
- I would have preferred if 'Anatomy' stayed a standalone. No matter how much the ending of it pissed me off.
- Dr. Ferris deserved better and I would absolutely love to read a book about him.

At about a third of the way through this novel, I began frantically Googling "Anatomy book 3?" in different variations with no results. I couldn't understand how the story could end when for a little over 50% of it, nothing about book one's cliffhanger is discussed. Well, it's lamented on. But passingly and without any furthering of the plot.
At about 57% in, we finally get a glimpse of a resolution.
Not to say I didn't enjoy this book because I really did. I enjoyed a lot of things this author did in this series. Even though many of those same things were not as good as it would've been to just HAVE THE 2 CHARACTERS INTERACT LIKE GOOD GOD DANA HOW HARD CAN IT BE??! -- Sorry. I digress...
I love Simon as an addition. Even though I was frustrated with a second love interest being thrown in the mix when it's only a duology and felt like it was robbing me of precious page time spent on my favorite relationship.
There's a specific coupling of characters that I was rooting so hard for. At first, I was completely confident that I was right in them eventually ending up together. But, as the book progressed, I lost more and most hope. But then WHAM! I was right and I was clapping for them and patting myself on the back, ha.

This book was every bit as good as the first. I just loved Hazel. I was kind of crushed to discover that this is the final book! I'm seriously going to miss this world. I'll be keeping my eyes open for other stories from this author.

My beating heart is still yours, and I’ll be waiting for you.
I’m disappointed, I can tell you that. And then I'm disappointed that I'm disappointed 🥺
I was super stoked for this book, as while the first one grossed me out a tiny bit it was still fun and engaging and above all, it was clean.
This one? Not so much.
The writing was still solid and never exactly bored me, but the plot, starting out strong in the beginning, kind of meandered out until it became more and more messy and cliche. A lot of it felt like filler and I definitely guessed the majority of the twists.
And then there was Jack.
I’m sorry, I mean the alien impersonating Jack.
Where was the gangly, awkward cinnamon roll I (and Hazel, ofc…. 🫥) fell in love with in the first book? This Jack was unhotly hot, shady, muscle-y, and YUCH. He acted so wrong. I think Dana Schwartz forgot basically the entire character she initially created. It made me sad ngl 🥲
Hazel was still pretty awesome, but she was too moody and just struck me as super sus half the time. Hhhhh
The book still entertained me most of the time, though, and the ending was satisfying!! I really wish I could give it at least 3 stars. Except there was some content I definitely want to stay away from as a reader. And I know other people don't even consider this to be content, but still. I can't highly rate a book with this in it.
Basically, the perfect cherry on top to my annoyance and disappointment of the book.
But if content doesn’t bother you, and you liked the first one, you’ll probably still want to read this to see how it ends. Or at least read the last chapter. And I hope you like it more than I!

My biggest issue was the sexual content. Hazel walks in on two bare-chested girls kissing in a bed (they stop as soon as Hazel comes in). After that the two girls snuggle and kiss several more times in Hazel’s presence. Hazel shares two passionate kisses with two different guys, and there’s also a non-explicit but very pleasant fade-to-black scene. The d-word used in the literal sense a few times. There’s not as much gory surgery content as the first book, but Hazel still stitches various body parts onto people and there are mentions of dismembered body parts. Several people get shot.

i read the previous instalment in this duology last year and i enjoyed it quite a lot – it was a fun read and i truly liked hazel and jack as protagonists. “immortality”, however, was quite the disappointment to me as i didn’t quite get what was the point of it. it felt messier than the first one, plot wise and i didn’t like a certain character that appeared in this one. i feel like his character was changed a bit too much for my liking, compared to how he acted in “anatomy”.
i loved simon and hazel together and i’m kind of sad they weren’t end-game, as they fit a lot better compared to the character hazel ends up with. i still liked hazel and how strongly she wanted to be a surgeon – i’m glad hazel’s character stayed coherent to how she was described in the first book.
the plot was lacklustre and i think many things happened for no reason at all, which made everything a bit confusing. some plot points were thrown in just to fill the space and they had nothing to add to the story – i truly believe that the story would’ve been fine without them. truthfully, the action is contained mostly in last 20% and the rest is mostly filler. i also kinda disliked how little of the actual surgical stuff we got, as i expected more gore-y scenes.
at the start of the story – and by that i mean a good 20% of it, hazel gets into a bit of trouble with the law and she gets arrested and there’s absolutely no consequences to that. we just move on and it isn’t spoken of again. also, why does nobody from hazel family cares that she was in jail??
the way the author explored the immortality trope that was introduced in the first book was definitely…interesting. i didn’t find the ending to this plot point satisfying and i think the ending was a set-up for a third novel. the idea was fun and the characters involved in this were truly well-crafted – their personalities were fun and i liked the parts when we were showed a bit of the secret society, but they were severely misused as plot devices.
the book simply tried to do too much and it fell flat in all aspects because of it. jack’s character was butchered compared to the first story, there was none of the “doctoring” that happened in the first book, the companions were an interesting addition to the cast of characters that, eventually, did absolutely nothing for the story. granted, the writing was consistent and the dialogue didn’t feel forced at all and i loved the chemistry between simon and hazel. perhaps this book will work for someone else, but it hasn’t for me.

Immortality is the perfect ending for Hazel. I really do not want to spoil anything here. Miss Schwartz done a brilliant work with her story. The dark and mysterious tone fit perfectly with the romance.
I do hope the TV or movie adaptation will give this book justice.

While I enjoyed Dana Schwartz's Immortality, I don't think that Anatomy needed a sequel to begin with. It ended in a somewhat open ended way, but the characters' statuses were implied. This was a fun adventure, but it felt disconnected from the original story. While I really enjoyed it happened pretty late in the book. It also felt like the plot meandered a lot, rather than build. Overall, I enjoyed this book, I just don't think it was a necessary addition.

⤷ so happy i was able to finish this duology back-to-back!

⤷ my biggest take away from this book was that i was able to finish it pretty gast! so thats a plus. other than that, i thought some plot points were unnecessary and the story couldve had smoother transitions. also, not having romance straight away threw me off 😭 shout out to dr. ferris, i liked him. btw what happened to iona?? thankfully, her writing is very nice and easy to get by. anyway, it was a quick end and im happy i tried this duology out to see my thoughts !! the regency/victorian/1800s setting is always interesting to turn to!! and hazel, thank you for being a surgeon 🫶 peace!! oh, and i prefer book 1 way more hehe <3

Choosing "A Love Story" as a subtitle for both "Anatomy" and "Immortality" feels so strange to me, because the love story was like the most disappointing part of these books???

what a CONCLUSION to this duology 😭 i don’t think i’ll ever be over how i felt reading it, needing the next page like air. i do agree with most people that the first book was better, but this was still so engaging and enjoyable to read despite the pretty different premise. instead of edinburgh, you get london, and the settings & prominent characters differ. there’s so much more i wanted to put in this review, but i can’t say much without spoiling so just find me in my dms after u read it 🫶💐
hazel sinnett cemented her position as one of my new all time favorite fmcs with this book— it focused EVEN MORE on her talents and skills and intellect, which i loved and appreciated so much. the new setting and atmosphere allowed her to thrive, and i just loved following her on her journey. i never tired of her perspective, and the pacing of the whole book allowed me to always feel connected and immersed in hazel’s story.
and OVERALL, the characters in this one!!! there were many new people introduced, and while there were some i was indifferent to, i absolutely adored others, and princess charlotte & eliza were two that i loved. as i’ve mentioned, i looove studying european history, and this book pulled in so much more— it made me so happy (out of context references if ur like me: the french revolution, jane austen, voltaire, prussia, and so much more). 🤭💌
i believe the ending really wrapped most things up, except a certain loose end that i really wanted to see resolved. but that is easily done if the author ever decides to write a novella of sorts following this book (DANA SCHWARTZ PLEASE WRITE A NOVELLA!!)
i had the most grand time reading this, and if my reviews convince anyone to pick it up, i really hope u enjoy it as much as me 💗✨

Just kidding, or am I? Plot wise, Immortality doesn’t have a main goal that Hazel is after throughout the novel, instead, a lot of shit happens to her and you see how she prevails every time.

Reading about Hazel moving to London cleared my skin. There. I said it.

The longing? The pining? Give it to me now. I almost lost faith that Jack was alive, at like 50% of the book, but it paid off so beautifully. I screamed. I giggled. I almost cried. Everything I thought they lacked on the first book, I got on this one.
The ending made me so happy, they’re married and happily ever after, your honor.

Reading about Hazel moving to London cleared my skin. There. I said it.
❥Romance 10/10
The longing? The pining? Give it to me now. I almost lost faith that Jack was alive, at like 50% of the book, but it paid off so beautifully. I screamed. I giggled. I almost cried. Everything I thought they lacked on the first book, I got on this one.
The ending made me so happy, they’re married and happily ever after, your honor.

Had a really fun time reading the second book even though I sometimes caught myself thinking yeah ok maybe this is a little too wild for my liking.
I definitely prefer Anatomy and in my opinion there wasn't really a need for a sequel but nonetheless I did very much enjoy Immortality: A Love Story.
I just love the main characters, Hazel's love story and the little royal side story 🤭 and it was a lot of fun to get back into this world!
4 ⭐️ feels kinda generous right now but I just loved so many of the characters that I'd feel bad only giving 3.5 ⭐️ lol
