Give Me Peace

Rate this book
Did you know, roughly twenty-seven percent of child abductions are carried out by an acquaintance or family friend? Who better to lure you away than someone you know and trust. With every day that passes, the likelihood of being found grows smaller. I never imagined I’d be one of them—my face tacked to a bulletin board at the local grocery store, a statewide search issued on my behalf. Even harder to fathom, was that I’d ever be a part of the lucky few who make it home after enduring years of captivity.

And when I finally do, nothing is the same.

I’m left to pick up the pieces of my shattered life without the one person I need the most. Instead, I have five men who’ve taken me under their wings, helping me heal as best they can. Every day I find a little more of myself, but the past has me in its clutches, refusing to let go. No matter how hard I work to move forward, he’s always there. Lurking in the shadows, eager to pull me back.

But as the saying goes— what’s done in the dark, will come to light.

Everything I thought I knew? It was wrong. There’s more at play than we realize, and while I grapple for a shred of normalcy, someone’s plotting and planning. Again . We’re racing to find answers, pitted against a countdown we’re completely unaware of. As the days tick by, the peace I’ve found with the guys hangs in the balance, threatened by an enemy I can’t seem to shake. I fought hard for my freedom, and I have no intention of standing idly by while it slips through my fingers once again.

I, Saylor Radley, have too much to lose to throw in the towel now.

I will not go quietly, and God help the poor bastard who thought it wise to go against my men. They saved me once, but maybe this time I’ll save myself.

Give Me Peace is a standalone, why-choose/RH romance. The heroine will have multiple love interests and will not be forced to choose between them. This book is not suited for anyone under the age of 18. Dark themes are touched on during this story. Aside from the initial backstory of SA, all romantic encounters are consensual.

Possible past SA and abuse, death, violence.

1st person POV

Wow. Just wow. I'm trying to find the right words to describe how much I enjoyed this book but I'm finding it difficult to string together a complete sentence. Give Me Peace by MK Harper deals with some heavy subject matter so please check TW/CW if you need to. While it doesn't go heavily into detail, it's sad and it's twisted and it's heartbreaking. Our FMC, Saylor, was 14 when she was kidnapped by the sheriff of her small town. The man that everyone trusted because he was the sheriff and he did good deeds. For 5 years she's kept in a small room, rationing her food and water since he would only visit every few days. Every month he would violate her body, both physically and mentally. This is why I hate the body betrayal bullshit we see so often from MMCs, where "you may be saying no but your body is saying yes." Physical arousal can be forced and it makes it that much more confusing and destructive for survivors of this trauma and I hate when it's casually dropped in romance books. Unless it's a CNC book with a clear discussion of boundaries and safe words/actions, it's disgusting behavior. Because of this, Saylor obviously finds it extremely difficult to take back her own pleasure. The prologue details her kidnapping and summarizes her years in captivity and the first few chapters are from a few of her soon-to-be men's POVs as they rescue her. I felt a little annoyed that we got info-dumped (not really info-dumpy it just felt like that because I was so anxious to get back to the topic of Saylor) on some of their backgrounds when we're at this peak of emotion of her being found, barely alive may I add, and it gets back to Saylor quickly, but I still think some of the background info on the guys' could've been pushed back a little bit...

Anyways, I think the progression from saviors, to friends, to lovers felt very natural. Since we get POVs from everyone, it's reassuring to hear the MMCs internal thoughts about how much they: want the best for Saylor, understand she could want nothing to do with them once she's safe, understand that they have no right to her love or her body, won't touch her unless she touches them first and even then making sure she's enthusiastic about what's happening, etc. They started with friendship and they built a solid foundation of trust and respect. Because of this, it's months before anything physical happens (there's time jumps but this is still a slow burn) and I loved seeing Saylor get to take back that final piece that her abductor stole. Once the spice started, it was fairly descriptive and pretty frequent. However, while this is a why-choose, there's no group scenes or MM. And I will say, I will never look at a sucker or frosting the same ever again lol - if you read this (or look at my highlights), you'll know what I mean.

I know it's probably rude to pick favorites in why-choose romances, but Kash really stole my heart. His personality and wit and goofiness was so fun to read. When you finally understand the why of his personality, your heart breaks for him knowing it's all a coping/defense mechanism born from his childhood abuse. Because he understood anger leads to pain, mostly physical but also emotional, he now does everything he can to break the tension and keep things light and funny. His relationship with Saylor was my favorite, followed closely by Kade, her bully from elementary/middle school. I'm glad she had these men in her corner. Overall, a lengthier read but so rewarding. Definitely check this out if the blurb interests you!

My pain and loss have made me who I am, and despite the heartache it took to get here, I happen to like her.

This isn’t a bad read, the flaws just piled up too much for me to be able to give it more than 3 stars.

This has a lot of similarities to Still Beating. Anyone who liked that would probably like this. Similar to that book, in this one, the heroine was kidnapped and held in a lunatic’s basement for a long time, and although we see some of her ordeal on the page, the majority of the story is about her healing from that trauma.

The main difference between this book and Still Beating is that this one is an RH, in this book the guys weren’t kidnapped with her but are just part of her recovery. And it’s a LOT less angsty than that book – her relationship with the guys is sweet. (So, Still Beating is better because it's more emotionally raw, and I think it's more emotionally truthful to the heroine's frame of mind and behavior after such an ordeal).

This book is also lower steam, but there is some. It’s just slow burn - but that feels appropriate, since the heroine, who's 19, is recovering from trauma.

It’s got 5 guys (ages 21-28), which is too many for a standalone RH. I’m not sure why authors insist on having large groups in standalone books! I want to poke the next author who does this with a stick. A standalone RH should have 3 guys, MAYBE 4 if the author is skilled at fast character development, but really 3. To this author’s credit, all 5 guys do have distinctive personalities. They don’t all blend together. But, they get an uneven amount of page time – one of them (the cinnamon roll one) gets a LOT more time with the heroine than the others. And since that kind of hero isn't my jam, I got bored by all their scenes together. He was way too puppyish to be appealing, and their scenes of eating junk food and hanging out watching movies got repetitive and dull.

The most interesting one of the heroes is the heroine’s former bully, who blamed himself for her getting kidnapped, took it upon himself to lead the search efforts for her, and became close with her mom while she was gone. That's an intriguing twist on the bully trope that I haven't seen before. (And, he was the only guy where it didn't feel bordering on insta-love with the heroine). Other than him, the rest are typical RH archetypes: the leader, the big strong one, the brooding one, the cinnamon roll.

This story did a fairly good job of having a contemporary RH feel like the relationship developed as naturally as possible - these characters communicated and discussed it. It does strain believability how fast the heroine is comfortable living with a house full of random guys she's never met before, plus her childhood bully – especially after what she’s been through. But I’m willing to wave that off and just go with it. The main reason this is 3 stars is because the guys didn’t get equal time, too much time was spent on the heroine being soft with the cinnamon roll hero in boring scenes. And then, the ending was very underwhelming.

Leading up to the end, everyone thought the heroine’s kidnapper was still out there, threatening her and trying to get her. But at the end,

So, the final showdown with the villain really felt like the author was like, “oh shit, I need some action and this story needs a climax!” And just threw in something that was poorly developed.

All in all, this book is not amazing. But if you’re in the mood for an emotional RH about the heroine recovering from trauma, helped by a bunch of supportive guys, it’s not bad and it kind of hits the spot for that.

KREWWW!!!!!!!!! ridiculous name but i forgive you. he's so elijah reed coded (quiet reserved tech god?!) and yet another proof of why it's alwaysssss the quiet ones 🫵🏼😃

krew is my favorite out of the guys, however!!

kade's relationship with saylor (the fmc) is my favorite out of all. it was so sad and beautiful and just ughhhhhhhhh also kinda enemies to lovers ish with a touch of DEEP regret??? like sign me up

this is actually HOW contemporary RH should be handled btw!! 🗣️🗣️

the guys had serious discussions about it beforehand and not all of them were instantly on board. their main concern was always the fmc and didn't want the fmc to be treated like a toy that could be "passed around"

but ultimately they left the decision up to her and discussed this with her too - one of the mmcs set his boundaries (not participating in group sex) and they all respected it.

it was such a nice change from your usual *instantly devoted* mmcs that would have raunchy group sex every other week even though they've never shared before.

the fmc also learned to be okay with being in a relationship with more than one person - she initially thought it was selfish! so i guess these were all realistic problems that most likely would arise if anyone were to enter a relationship with that many people in it.

this book is also pretty dark, especially the first 50% (the fmc had been in captivity for five years and the mmcs were the private investigators who rescued her)

and i really loved that for the first half, they focused on the fmc's healing. they were attracted to her for sure but didn't really talk much about it. they suggested therapy to her first and foremost, but they let her make the decision. the fmc also wasn't at all attracted or thinking about how "hot" these guys were while she was healing, which was so nice.

i wasn't a big fan of the last half, though. pretty much when feelings and attraction started getting involved. it got too fluffy for me and it bored me to tears. the last 30% dragged so much i couldn't wait to finish i didn't even want the mystery to be solved at that point honestly 😭

what kept me going was krew.... the author made the right choice of choosing him to have the slowest burn lol 😭🫵🏼

but yeah smut wasn't bad but also maybe too much? since each of the guys got their own dedicated sexy time. which was a GOOD day for krew girlies i ain't gonna deny that but still....... wrap it up I'm tired 🥱

5 stars for the pure enjoyment it gave me and for the first half and first half only, but 3 stars overall! [being very generous]

2.5 stars rounded up to three

I'm torn about this book.
I skipped a lot of the story in the second half, just to get to the conclusion, which is why the rating is not as good as the average rating of this book.
I really had issues with this book. But the author picked a difficult topic and I think the execution is difficult. And the author had the guts to do it. I'm putting my issues in a spoiler tag, because this part will be revealing.

So as much as I want to give it a better rating, a three stars rating is a generous rating with all my issues. Mostly due to the fact, that the author did not shy away form a difficult subject, that the author tried to be understanding about her five year of trauma and abuse. One thing I didn't like is that she rarely addressed the issues the guys have with them.

I so wanted to love this, but sadly this story was a weird mix of being very realistic one minute, and then incredibly contrived and unbelievable the next.

While Saylor was a fantastic lead, I just had so many questions about the guys and the way they interjected themselves into her life.

Despite their good intentions, you can't deny that they kept her isolated in a bubble of their own creation and made her emotionally dependent on them barely days after her captivity. That's not okay!

Also, as cruel as this sounds, I couldn't understand the author's decision to make Saylor a victim of SA minus r*pe. It felt unrealistic considering the dark reality of the subject matter (child abduction, psychological torment, captivity, sex trafficking etc).

I'm not saying I wanted that to happen to her, but considering everything else she'd suffered, it seemed like a strange omission.

So yeah, while this book came highly recommended, and it's definitely well written, it just didn't appeal to me the way it has so many others.

Audio:
4 stars for Raven Hawkins and James Cavenaugh

Book: 1.5-2 stars

Well… holy shit this was a long as fuck book, 588 pages!

I think the beginning held a lot of promise, but for all the trauma that Saylor endured she was very trusting of 5 men way faster than I thought.

Also after 30% it got really boring, not much happened, I wanted some actions or something, but we just got chapter after chapter of everyday life.

Also the ending was anticlimactic, for all the time I spent with these characters I wanted something more!

So this was ten levels of terrible, but I respect it more than another RH title with a similar premise I tried to put myself through, because while they both had a guy grab his dick in the shower while thinking of the badly abused young woman he was tasked to protect, this one’s had enough decency to drop it because he realized wanking to the thought of a recovering victim of abuse would be super fucked up. So, points for basic human decency!

And the male narrator had an awesome deep voice!

HOWEVER, these two facts do not make up for the trope-led writing that thinks men who obsess over a young woman who they have never met outside her casefile is somehow endearing instead of creepy. Or even just the painfully boring repetitiveness of what this book tries to pass off as a plot. They eat. Go to the beach. Watch a movie. Rinse and repeat, add a couple of scary postcards to pretend any thought went into this, then back to the food-movie-beach cycle before the bad guy inevitable breaks in, despite the fact it was supposed to be a safehouse full of highly trained security experts.

I only finished it because I was desperate for a standalone slowburn available in audio, not because I found any worth or even original in the writing, characters or setting.

This was surprisingly really funny, even with all of the darkness.
I loved all the relationship development, and the care they all took with her. I was a little put off at first by some reviews I saw about that moving too soon for them, but for me it was perfect. Every one of them was attracted early on, but the guys really allowed her to go at her pace and helped her heal along the way. I loved it.
And I actually really enjoyed the little bit of thrill that the overarching plot gave it.

I’m just really underwhelmed and disappointed. I expected a darker book (because you know five years in captivity in horrible conditions). But Saylor just kind of gets over it very quickly. Good for her but not realistic and also not enjoyable for me.

I read the first 40%, skipped the middle part and then read the final chapters to find out what happened with the whole kidnapping and SA plot.

For anyone that doesn’t want to read the entire book to find out, this is what happens with the kidnapping and SA plot: Liam kidnapped Saylor because he got an order (and payment) from some random dude to kidnap Saylor and “prime” her for him by breaking her spirit. Liam was supposed to send him updates and pictures of Saylor but then he stopped after a while. When it became clear that years later Saylor was alive and rescued, the random dude murders Liam (he was mad that Liam disobeyed him). Random dude sends threats to Saylor and the guys and starts killing women that look like Saylor. The gang thinks it’s all Liam but at like 90% they find out that Liam was murdered so it had to be someone else (yes a new villain that nobody knows is introduced super late into the story). At the end the guy breaks into their house and nearly kills Roan. Saylor and the dude have a tussle and she kills him with a gun. The dude turns out to be a teacher that had seen Saylor and became immediately obsessed with owning her. The family of the dude (wife and kids) had no idea of the badness of this man and they apologise to Saylor and don’t show up to his funeral (the message is that at the end he was alone). His name was Jeremiah but that literally doesn’t matter because you only learn about his existence in the final chapters.

I learned all of this from reading the final chapters. Didn’t feel like I missed anything important. A lot of the beginning and them being in the house felt like filler.

It was also clear that the author really liked puppy sunshine character Kash because he got so many scenes with Saylor. I did not really care for him so that sucked and also it got repetitive fast. I wanted to know a lot more about the other characters. Or at least for it to be equal.

If you want a darker captivity story with a hint of romance, read If We Disappear Here. Or a more angsty and emotional captivity read: Still Beating. Both good books.

this was a reread, and I really liked it! 😍

I love the vulnerability and emotion in this book. The mature communication and the fact that the traumas are not resolved immediately when you meet the love(s) of your life.

Each person had their own past with vulnerabilities and character traits.

All the characters are easy to like and contribute something to the story.

What can you expect:
❤️why choose
❤️5 amazing guys
❤️security company
❤️abduction
❤️psycho stalker
❤️traumas
❤️communication
❤️therapy
❤️spice
❤️slow burn
❤️dark themes

We were so close to 4⭐️, but the last 20% moved it back down to 3.

This was a very compelling and (mostly) super sweet read. The last 20% felt like the author was trying to do too much, but it didn’t ruin the story so I’ll let it go.

If you enjoyed the sweetness of the men in WITSEC, you will really enjoy this book.

TW/CW: kidnapping, on-page molestation and abuse (not by love interests) and it’s a why choose/reverse harem.

this book was unreal

MK Harper’s Give Me Peace is like that perfect cup of coffee you didn’t know you needed—warm, comforting, and just what the doctor ordered for your soul. This book broke me and put me back together again multiple times. I had to dredge into my own trauma a little and came out the other side feeling like I actually felt better.

The relationships were borderline predatory given the main character’s situation. The nicknames and “nose boops” added to the pedo vibes. Of age doesn’t make it right. The fact that they keep a list of food that she makes a “moaning” sound while eating? Entirely creepy.

I think this book has great potential to be awesome but sadly it disappointed in all areas mainly the lack of excitement or action, depth to the characters and of course sex scenes. *I don't think this is spoilers but maybe to some it might be*

I'm not going to sugar coat it but it think the characters lack any sort of depth. what I mean by this is that for example saylor, yes she went through something traumatic and I cans sort of relate as well have a understanding where she is coming from. what I have an issue is nothing is explored to see beyond her trauma, is not like in the book she had many triggers; which make it more interesting how she works through those hardships and still thrive to be better. another point is that for example some work she does it left untouched, she doesn't go back to it.

as for the guys well where do I start, honestly there were 5 and 3 had some sort of personality the rest it was like copy paste personality of the rest or a combination; very bland. For men who have "trauma" and are older they sure act like a 15 year old that just hit puberty. When they finally do get to the sex part; I was very disappointed.

last point to my rant: this book I read it until the last chapter it was so repetitive everything the same no excitement, no change, no build up and finally no character growth. tell me how not even once she goes out, or even take her out side of the country for crying out loud. literally it seems she stays the same all through the book.

now I know what I wanted to say is that this book all of the characters felt like a women was even the men. what I mean by this is that the male characters their thoughts were as a women thoughts I dont know how to explain it better. when it did feel like it was a man thinking it was as if a man cave men.

This book started off so promising. The writing was fantastic and the premise intrigued me. I was hooked in from the first chapter easily and liked the FMC.
I was 15% of the way through (I think the book is 500+ pages) and I still didn't know what any character looked like. That is an absolute pet peeve of mine as I'm a vivid imaginer as I read. It's like a movie going on in my head.
Unfortunately, I just got really cranky at the story. It made me mad that they thought it was the best choice to send her home AFTER 5 YEARS OF CAPTIVITY with 5 males she doesn't know ... this was suggested by the FBI agent on her case (who also added them as her next of kin with NO CONSULTATION OF HER. She just had her autonomy and liberties taken away from her for 5 years, but sure just decide 2 random guys she doesn't know can be her NOK). Not believable and an awful idea for the poor girl, but then she gets there and is cuddling with them, having them sleep in her bed the 2nd night etc. etc. Nope. And then their cinnamon roll personalities just got on my nerves. I love a nice guy in a story, but in a why choose you cannot have all 5 males behaving the same way (at least not for me). And Kash's character o m f g. I would've moved out just to get away from him. Just ick. Alas, I couldn't finish it, I couldn't believe anything and couldn't stand the characters in the end after what started as a very promising beginning.

not for me…got bored quickly

I’ll start by saying that what I read of this book was written well. I however just couldn’t get into this book at all. I gave it till 50%, and I just still couldn’t get into it. I stopped and started this book a few times. In the end it just wasn’t for me.

I found a few things really unbelievable, which I think is partly why I was having such a hard time with this book. Firstly is that while in captivity for all those years, her abductor didn’t go as far as you think he would have after all that time. It just didn’t seem likely that she would have been there all those years and left with her innocence intact.

I also didn’t find it believable how comfortable she was with the guys from the get go. Allowing them to sleep next to her, and touch her, and hold her hand, and hug her.

When you are violated like that it is extremely hard to allow men near you, let alone touch you, hug you, or hold you. Trust me I know.

I just think this book wasn’t for me. It wasn’t even the dark themes, I’ve read books with worse themes. I just personally found this really hard to get into.

I really enjoyed this.

Idk what it was.
I think it might have been the dark setting, but not ridiculously Mafia infused.
Loved the why choose but also the fact that it’s a slow burn.
Loved how it was a lot about her trauma healing and dealing with what’s normal and what’s not.
I liked the men too.
The whole story with her kidnapper stayed interesting.

It was a bit too long, especially some parts that didn’t needed to be that long.
But overall, I liked this a lot.

Such a slow delicious burn! Loved Saylor and her guys. Obviously, it's got some heavy subject matters since our h was abducted at 14 and spent 5 years with a very sick individual. Saylor's peace doesn't even come when she is rescued because on top of finding her kidnapper is on the loose, she also finds out that the most important person in her life passed away while she was locked away in her own hell. Luckily there are five men who have spent the last couple of years hunting for her and are willing to put their lives on the line to keep her safe. Lochlan, Kade, Roan, Kash and Krew. Yes, this is a why choose and she has five guys who want to love her and for once I'm glad it was a slow burn. I think the author did a great job easing Saylor into her RH. She actually dealt with the mental health issues that someone who went through something like that may have. The guys took care with her and helped her through her panic attacks, got her professional help and were just all around there for her.
Loved the twist at the end with the stalker. Loved that Saylor got her peace in the end.

This was boring. And I mean BORING. Oh and awkward, and not cute awkward. The plot was so boring with flat characters, confusing backgrounds/backstories, and just so slow. The story was also so unrealistic like she was having s3x after 2 weeks with the guys and trusted them with all her heart. I men’s no shaming, but girl, you might be going mighty fast for someone that was kidnapped for 5 years, got abused and sexually assaulted…

If you're looking for a contemporary RH romance with all the feels, a heavy dose of spice, protective MMCs and a totured heroine, then Give Me Peace is the book for you. I adored all the characters, but I'd be lying if I said Kash wasn't my favorite. I was in awe of his antics and goofy behavior + golden retriever vibes despite having been through a shit ton of trauma. Krew, Havok, Roan and Lochlan were equally endearing though, in their own ways, with a lot of "who did this you" vibes. Saylor' character and journey as a survivor of something so traumatic felt extremely authentic and real and I was glad that the author didn't make her jump into sex with guys right away. It was an eventual buildup to a poly relationship (with a healthy dose of jealousy from the guys) that didn't feel forced. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the unequal page time each of the guys was given and how Say never said "I love you" back to Loch and neither did she confess her feelings for Krew. It seemed like Kash was the author's favorite character which was probably why she included more scenes of him and Saylor - though I can't really blame her for that lol. Just wanted to add this because so far, in all the RH books/series I've read, I've never felt an imbalance between the heroine and either of the men in the harem. Also, if you're looking for a solid, intriguing plot, I hate to break it to you that this book ain't it because it's more focused on the romance and the development of the characters (not that I'm complaining hehe). Overall, this was a really good - albeit long - 5 star read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Would totally recommend xx

3/5🌶️

This was originally on my TBR since I received it as a blind date with a book from Probably Smut. It took me a while to actually get to it, but once I was there, WOW did I demolish this quickly. The premise of the story is pretty upsetting and dark, so caution should be taken if you have any sort of trigger/content warnings you're sensitive to. Even with this dark beginning (coupled with some darkness here and there throughout the story), this book was absolutely fantastic. The first 60% was SO much yearnin' and burnin', it was driving me out of my mind! The rest of the story was incredibly sexy, taboo, ALL OF IT... it far exceeded my expectations of a reverse harem. I shed some tears & had some big emotions, all of which added to how much I enjoyed this book!

I gave it three peppers, but keep in mind my spice rating is based on spice to plot ratio, as opposed to the actual content/level of the spice. Reminder to check your triggers!

Okay, so I enjoyed this book but i also just don’t know how i feel. . I really loved the way all the guys cared for her in their own ways and was dedicated to helping her. But, i just feel like the plot sort of fell off toward the middle & end. I didn’t see the plot twist coming with the guy who abducted her and it felt a bit anticlimactic given the way the book started. But, the guys ate and I liked how the relationships progressed. The writing was also really really good. So, I’ll definitely pick up something else by this author.

I really enjoyed this book. It was sad, emotional, funny and exciting! The relationship growth between the main characters felt very realistic. I was sucked into the story from the first pages. This is something between Still Beating and men of WITSEC series.

This was surprisingly cute and wholesome. I went in to this book blind with no expectations and haven’t heard of this author before.

Even though the theme of the book is dark and devastating it still felt much like a sweet and happy love story. Who would have thought after reading the blurb.

Did I like it? Yes. Would I recommend for someone without triggers looking for a sweet and actually kind of innocent reverse harem? Yes. But did i love it and devour it? No.

The book could use editing but the typos and grammar errors didn’t bother me to much. There were also some liberty’s taken with the storyline to get the plot to add up where the writer wanted the book to go. But it’s fine. It was still very enjoyable and I had a good time reading this book.

It was interesting and you get what you sign up for! i just unfortunately think with why chooses you need more than one book otherwise you feel duped with the time spent with each of them (which is exactly what i felt)
