खूप दिवसांनी कुणीतरी आपल्या गावचं, जवळचं भेटावं आणि आपल्याशी मोकळेपणानं मनमुराद गप्पा माराव्यात. अशा माणसांशी बोलताना 'समोरचा गैरसमज तर करून घेणार नाही ना' ही किंतु न बाळगता बोलतो. तसच काहीसं वाटलं, आहे मनोहर तरी वाचताना. कदाचित हे पुस्तक आपल्या आवडत्या पु. लं बद्दल आहे म्हणूनही ते जवळचं वाटत असेल. पण सुनिता देशपांडेंना मी सर्वस्वी त्यांचं श्रेय देऊ इच्छिते. त्यांची ती वाचकांवर विश्वास टाकून गोष्टी सांगायची पद्धत, मनोविश्लेषन करायची नी स्वत:ची काही चूक तर नाही ना ही खात्री करून घेण्याची सवय त्यांच्या व्यक्तित्त्वाबद्धल, स्वत:शी असलेल्या एकनिष्ठते बद्दल बरचं काही सांगून जाते. डाउन विथ किचन असं म्हणत स्त्रियांना करीअरबद्दल कधीकाळी जागृत करणाऱ्या ह्या कर्तृत्ववान स्त्री वर जेव्हा निर्णय घ्यायची वेळ आली तेव्हा त्यांनी स्वखुशीने पुलंचं घर सांभाळायचं ठरवीलं. अवघा महाराष्ट्र त्यासाठी त्यांचा ऋणी आहे. नवऱ्याचं घरदार सोडाच पण त्यांनी पुलंचं प्रूफ रीडिंग, काॅपीराइट्स, प्रकाशक, कार्यक्रम, ट्रस्टच काम, पेमेंट हे सर्व दक्षतेन सांभाळलं. त्या पुलंच्या ड्राइवरही होत्या, सेक्रेटरीही होत्या नी काउंसलरही. प्रत्येक कर्त्तबगार पुरूषामागे एक स्त्री असते, याचं त्या ज्वलंत उदाहरण.

मला त्यांचा जवळपास प्रत्येकच पैलूंबाबत भावला. स्वातंत्र्य लढ्यात भाग घेण्यासाठी जेव्हा घरच्यांनी विरोध केला तेव्हा घर सोडलं. त्याच कामासाठी जेव्हा गरज पडली तेव्हा पांढरी साडी आणी कोरं कपाळ त्यांनी आपलसं केलं. जातीबाहेर लग्न केलं. तेही विधीरहीत. आज लिहीताना विशेष वाटत नाही पण नऊवारी घालण्याच्या आणि रुपया एवढं कुंकू लावण्याच्या काळात हे विचारही करायला खूपच कमी लोक धजावत असतील. काही गोष्टी त्यांनी ज्या प्रांजळतेनं कबूल केल्या आहेत, त्या नकळत वाचकांची प्रशंसा घेऊन जातं. त्या खऱ्या फेमिनीस्ट होत्या. कुणास ठाऊक किती स्त्रियांना त्यांनी प्रेरीत केलं असेल.

ही माझी मत त्यांच्या पुस्तकावरून बनली आहेत. मला नाही वाटतं स्वत:चं गुनगाण करण्यासाठी त्यांनी हे लिहीले असावं. पुलंच्या अर्धांगिनीला प्रसिद्धीची हौस भागवायला आणखी काही करायची खरच काही गरज असेल का? आयुष्यभर प्रकाश देणाऱ्या दिव्याची वातही प्रकाशमानच असते.

लेखिका म्हणून त्यांची स्वत:ची एक सुंदर शैली आहे. जी. ए. कुलकर्णी ना ती भावावी यांत काहीच नवल नाही. त्यांच्या प्रोत्साहना शिवाय हे तेजस्वी व्यक्तीमत्व कदाचित पडद्यामागेच राहून गेलं असतं. लिहावसं तर खूप काही आहे पण प्रत्येक स्त्रीवादी व्यक्तिने, पुलंच्या चाहत्यांनी, तर्कशुद्ध वैचारकांनी आणि प्रत्येकच स्रीने हे जीवनकार्य न चुकता वाचावं, एवढंच मी म्हणेन.

आजपर्यंत मी वाचलेलं सगळ्यात frank आत्मचरित्र. स्वतःचे मत सतत ठामपणे मांडणाऱ्या व्यक्तीकडून हेच अपेक्षित आहे.

बऱ्याच गोष्टींमधून अनेक नावाजलेल्या (आणि इतर साध्या) व्यक्तींचे चांगले-वाईट गुण दिसतात. पण ते गुण माणसाच्या स्वभावातच असल्यामुळे सुनीता बाई त्यांना judge करत नाहीत. फक्त कधी कधी काही लोकांच्या (especially पु लं च्या) बाबतीत नाराजीचा सूर जाणवतो.

जो rule इतरांसाठी तोच स्वतःसाठी सुद्धा! सुनीता बाई स्वतःच्या स्वभावातल्या चांगल्या-वाईट गोष्टीसुद्धा खूप मोकळेपणाने सांगतात. पण यातही कधी कधी स्वतःची indirectly तारीफ करवून घेतलेली जाणवते. उदा. - माझ्या अत्यंत काटेकोरपणाचा मलाच त्रास होतो, इत्यादी. पण या गोष्टीला आपण सुनीता बाईंचा स्वभाव समजून सोडून दिले तर पुस्तक आपल्याला आवडेलच.

'आहे मनोहर तरी..' नावाप्रमाणेच आयुष्यातल्या काही खटकलेल्या (काही सुखद) गोष्टींचे हे चिंतन. पण तक्रारीचा सूर अजिबात नाही. तसं बघितलं तर एका थोर लेखकाची पत्नी, जी सगळ्या बाबतीत पूर्णपणे स्वतंत्र विचारांची आहे, स्वतंत्र आहे, समाजात आदर आणि मान आहे, पैशांची जास्त हौस नाही, थोडक्यात समाधानी होणाऱ्या तिला खरंतर कुठल्या गोष्टींची कमतरता जाणवावी असा प्रश्न सहज मनात येतो. त्याचं कारण कदाचित आपलं अज्ञानच. पु.लंना सगळा महाराष्ट्र ओळखतो. पण ती झाली एका कलाकाराची बाजू, त्यांची रोजच्या आयुष्यातली बाजू आपल्याला अनोळखीच असते. अशाच काही रोजच्या सुखद दुःखद अनुभवांवर आधारित हे पुस्तक.

साधारण पन्नाशीच्या पुढेमागे लिहिलेल्या या पुस्तकातून सुनीताबाई स्वतःच्या आयुष्याचा थोडक्यात आढावा घेतात. अर्थातच त्यात पु.लंबद्दलही बऱ्याच गोष्टी येतात. मुळातच बंडखोर असलेल्या सुनीताबाईंचे लहानपण, मग साधारण पंधराव्या सोळाव्या वर्षात देशाच्या स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीतला सहभाग, प्रेम, दोघांमधलं नातं (आणि विरुद्ध टोकाचे काही स्वभाव), आयुष्यात जे काही पुढ्यात येईल ते आनंदाने स्वीकारत जाण्याचा भाईंचा स्वभाव, अचानक गवसलेले काही सुखद अनुभव, सुनीताबाईंच्या परखड आणि सडेतोड वृत्तीमुळे वाढत असलेली आजूबाजूंच्या लोकांची नाराजी, भाईंचं त्यांच्यावर असलेलं अवलंबित्व, व्यावसायिक पातळीवर आलेले वेगवेगळ्या लोकांचे बरे वाईट अनुभव, एकटेपण आणि अशा बऱ्याच गोष्टींचे चिंतन, आणि पडलेल्या प्रश्नांची उत्तरे शोधण्याचा प्रयत्न म्हणजे हे पुस्तक. आत्मचरित्रापेक्षा एका वेगळ्याच पातळीवर नेणारे हे पुस्तक आपल्यालाही विचार करायला भाग पाडते. आयुष्याच्या वेगवेगळ्या टप्प्यावर मिळालेले अनुभव, प्रश्न आणि उतारवयात लागलेले अर्थ, हे कळायला खरंतर आपलेही विचार प्रगल्भ असायला हवेत. हे पुस्तक जर मी शाळा-कॉलेजमधल्या वयात वाचले असते तर कळलेही नसते, आणि अजून काही वर्षांनी परत वाचले तर अजून नवीनच काही कळेल. पण पुस्तक वाचल्यावर आपल्या विचारात बदल होतो नक्कीच. असले प्रश्न ज्यांना पडत नाहीत, किंवा त्यावर विचार करायला आवडत नाहीत त्यांना हे पुस्तक कदाचित आवडणारही नाही. त्यात कोणाचीच चूक नाही. लेखिकेच्या भाषेत हाही ज्याच्या त्याच्या पिंडाचाच भाग!

प्रत्येक यशस्वी माणसामागे एक व्यक्ती नक्कीच असते, याचा पुरेपूर अनुभव हे पुस्तक वाचताना येत राहतो. अजून एक जाणवलेली गोष्टं म्हणजे त्यांचा स्वष्टवक्तेपणा! स्वतःच्या चुकादेखील त्यांनी प्रखरपणे मांडल्या आहेत. भाषाशैली खूपच छान. अगदीच लेखिकेच्या प्रश्नांचे अर्थ शोधण्यात interest नसेल तरी पु.लंबद्दल, सुनिताबाईंबद्दलच्या रोजच्या आयुष्याविषयी काही उत्सुकता असेल तर हे पुस्तक नक्कीच वाचायला हवं.

There's so much that we don't about PL that it doesn't come as a surprise that we know nothing about his wife, Sunita Deshpande. This is her memoir and boy was she force to be reckoned with!
She was called "Dog in the house of PL" to mock her dismissive attitude towards people who used to waste PL's time. Addressing this in the book, she mentions - 'If they saw me as a dog, did they not see the chain that tied me to this household?'
She was a true rebel and yet she became utmost domesticated for PL handling every aspect of his work, including being his driver. She was a truly progressive woman. She married out of her caste, may sound meh now but was a big deal for that time. In the book, she captures her life from around 5 to 60. Every aspect of her life is inspiring and the daring with which she has revealed everything makes for passionate read. Many a times, eyes well up with tears reading this and not because of some melodrama but because some epiphany that occurs in the simplest of prose. Many quotes have tore my heart and are permanently settled there. So many radical choices she made all through her life that you become a fanboy while reading about her.
This is MUST read for everyone who can read marathi. I would put this in top 20 marathi books list (although I have never seen it in any list ever).
Her feminist thoughts are timeless and more valuable today than ever given the brouhaha about it. This is great read for guys to get a peak into feminist line of thinking. It is hugely empowering to all the women. Gift it to your mother/sister/girlfriend. Trust me they will love you more. Of course you should read it first :p
PS - If GA Kulkarni has made you crazy by his stories, you'd be immensely pleased to know that he shared a very special friendship with Sunita Deshpande. A mystic like GA opened his heart to her through their letter exchange. Check the book called - Priya GA by Sunita Deshpande. First read 'Aahe Manohar..' and then jump to this one.

I remember I had a lesson in my book in school days named "Darshanmatre" which was an extract from this book, I read this book after I finish my school, when I came across this specific extract, I recollected my marathi teacher & how she taught this chapter to us...it was just a awesome feeling, dont know why couldn't I complete it, so request you all not to go through the ratings I have given since I didnt read it completely, I found it very narrative too...a lot much narration, bores me..dont know if m going to read this again.

It took 25 years to read after I read some extract in newspaper. somehow I use to avoid it . I do not like autobiography much. but the attraction of this book was long since i read some part of the book. one can feel the turmoil of very liberal intelligent rebel yet sensitive and down to earth woman her dreams passion and though living with Pu La ;following her own separate dreams was amazing . sticking to your principles yet accepting the tough reality is the course of life .

हे पुस्तक पुलंबद्दल नाही. त्यांचे बरेच संदर्भ येतात पण माणूस म्हणून. महाराष्ट्राचे कलेचे दैवत वगैरे म्हणून नाही. पुलंबरोबर संसार करताना, सुनीता देशपांडे स्वतः कश्या होत्या ह्याची पुरेपूर जाणीव करून देणारं हे पुस्तक आहे. थोडंसं निराशावादी आहे. अर्थात वाटतं तसं. पण बव्हंशी ते तथ्याधारित आहे. टोकाच्या तर्कनिष्ठ आणि तर्कशुद्ध माणसाला समाजात राहताना बरेच त्रास होतात. सुनीताबाईंचंही थोडं असंच झालेलं आहे. देवांचेही पाय मातीचेच असतात ह्याची प्रचिती येते.

पुलंचे साहित्य जनमानसाला सहज आवडून जाणारे आहे. सुनीताबाईंचे त्याउलट. ते गरजेचे आहे ते स्वतःच्या विचारांना एक आयाम प्राप्त करून घेण्यासाठी. उत्कृष्ट लिखाणाचा नमुना म्हणून. पूर्णवेळ पुस्तक खाली ठेववत नाही इतके ओघवते झाले आहे. पुस्तकाला वेगवेगळी प्रकरणे नाहीत, पण आयुष्याचा पट बहुतांशी कालानुरूप त्या उलगडत जातात. बालपणीच्या कोकणातील संदर्भांना संपूर्ण पुस्तकात मध्ये मध्ये जागा मिळत राहते आणि सुनीताबाई व्यक्ती म्हणून कुठे आणि कश्या घडल्या ह्याची वाचकाला सतत जाणीव होत राहते.

मधूनच कुठेही वाचन करावे असे जमून आले आहे. अथ पासून इति पर्यंत एकदा तरी नक्कीच वाचावे, पण नंतर पारायणे करताना (ती होतीलच) कुठूनही सुरु करावे असे जमले आहे. स्त्री असण्याचे संदर्भ जागोजागी येतात आणि त्यामुळे स्त्री साहित्यातील सुद्धा हा मैलाचा दगड म्हणता येईल.

या पुस्तकात सुनीताबाईंनी एखाद्या परंपरागत आत्मचरित्राऐवजी विविध आठवणींचा एक मनोहर गुच्छ सादर केला आहे आणि त्यासोबत पदोपदी त्यांची मूळ विवेकी प्रवृत्ती तसेच परखड मते ठळकपणे समोर आलेली आहेत.

वरील कुसुमाग्रजांच्या ओळी संसाराचे वर्णन करण्यासाठी लेखिका उद्धृत करतात.

या आत्मचरित्रात जसे कौटुंबिक नातेसंबंधांविषयी सखोल वर्णन आणि चिकित्सा आहे तसेच असामान्य असे अनेक प्रसंगही आहेत. सुनीता देशपांडे या १९४२ च्या चळवळीत भूमिगत राहून स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यात योगदान देत होत्या ही पहिल्यांदा माहिती या निमित्ताने झाली. त्यांच्या धाडसी आणि बंडखोर व्यक्तिमत्वाची ओळख अनेक प्रसंगातून होते. त्यातील एक म्हणजे बॉम्ब बनविण्याचे काम त्या १६-१७ वर्षाच्या वयात करत होत्या आणि एक अपघात झाल्यावरदेखील पुढे एक वर्ष भूमिगत होऊन ते काम चालू ठेवले होते.

अपेक्षेनुसार पुलंसोबतच्या संसारावर देखील सविस्तर भाष्य लेखिका करतात. त्यांचा मूलभूत नीटनेटकेपणा आणि पुलंचा अघळपघळ कारभार यांचा मेळ संसारात कसा बसला याचे अनेक किस्से पुस्तकात आहेत. त्याशिवाय पंडित भीमसेन जोशी, वसंतराव देशपांडे, कुमार गंधर्व अशा दिग्गजांच्या मैफिली त्यांच्या दिवाणखान्यात रंगत. त्यांचे वर्णन ऐकूनही त्या काळाचा हेवा वाटतो.

पुलंना लेखनासोबतच संगीत, चित्रपट, व्याख्यान यामध्येही उत्तुंग प्रतिभा होती. लेखिका प्रांजळपणे कबुल करतात की त्या जर पुलंच्या आयुष्यात आल्या नसत्या तर त्यांनी लेखनापेक्षा चित्रपट आणि संगीतामध्ये जास्त काम केले असते. कारण त्यांचे पहिले प्रेम संगीतावर होते. तथापि बायकोला प्रिय असणारा एकांत आणि पुलंना आवडणारा माणसांचा घोळका यातील द्वंद्व शेवटी त्यांना लेखनाकडे जास्त वळते करत गेलं. स्वतःच्या जीवनाकडे एवढ्या तटस्थपणे पाहून केलेले विवेचन कमी आत्मचरित्रांमध्ये वाचायला मिळते.

पुलंच्या कौटुंबिक आणि व्यावसायिक जीवनाचा ताबा सुनीताताईंनी घेतला आणि त्यास पुलंनी देखील आनंदाने संमती दिली. विविध सार्वजनिक प्रसंगात कसे वागावे याविषयी दोघांचे विचार भिन्न होते. पत्नीकडून सततच्या येणाऱ्या सूचनांमुळे पुलं गमतीने सुनीताबाईंना उद्देशून म्हणायचे, ' या घरात मी एकटाच देशपांडे आहे, तू ' उपदेश'पांडे आहेस!'. मात्र यातील चेष्टेचा विषय सोडला तर पुलंच्या दैवी देणगीला सुनीताबाईंच्या सजग, कर्तबगार व्यवस्थापनाची जोड मिळाल्यामुळे महाराष्ट्राला अनेक दशके उत्तमोत्तम कलाकृती मिळत गेल्या हे सत्य या पुस्तकातून समोर येते.

सांस्कृतिक विश्वासोबतच समाजसेवेतील नानाविध अनुभवांनी देशपांडे कुटुंबीय कसं प्रगल्भ होत गेलं याचं सविस्तर वर्णन पुस्तकात आलं आहे. सुरवातीला काही प्रकल्पातील संधीसाधू राजकारणातून आलेल्या अनुभवानंतर त्यांनी पुलंच्या नावाने ट्रस्ट स्थापन करण्याचा निर्णय घेतला आणि प्रामाणिक हेतूने कार्य करणाऱ्या संस्थांना शोधून त्यांना मदत करणे हा त्यांना छंदच जडला. त्याचे ब्रीदवाक्य होते तुकाराम महाराजांचे वचन - "जोडोनियां धन उत्तम वेव्हारें । उदास विचारें वेच करी "

स्टोरीटेल अँपवर अरुणा ढेरे यांनी सुरेख अभिवाचन केलेलं audiobook उपलब्ध आहे. महाराष्ट्राच्या सांस्कृतिक जीवनाविषयी आस्था असणाऱ्या प्रत्येकाने वाचावे (किंवा ऐकावे) असे हे आत्मचरित्र आहे.

पुस्तकातील छाप पडणाऱ्या अनेक प्रभावी परिच्छेदांपैकी काहींचा इथे उल्लेख करीत आहे.

१) सज्जनपणा, चांगुलपणा, दातृत्व, आदरातिथ्य वगेरे गुण प्रसंगी उपद्रवीच असतात. मला वाटते, दुर्गुणांप्रमाणेच सद्गुणांचेही माणसाला व्यसन लागते. आणि व्यसनाधीन माणसाच्या बायकोची परवड व्हायची ती होतेच. दुर्गुणी माणसाच्या बायकोबद्दल इतरांना सहानुभूती तरी वाटत असते. पण सद्‌गुणी नवऱ्याच्या बायकोला सक्तीने आनंदी मुखवटा वापरावा लागतो. आणि सदेव हसतमुख राहण्याच्या सक्तीसारखी दुसरी महाभंयकर शिक्षा नसेल.

२) आईमधला स्पष्टवक्तेपणाही असाच माझ्यात आलेला आहे. हा गुण म्हणायचा की दोष ? स्पष्टवक्तेपणा हा तसा पाहिला तर गुणांच्या यादीतच सापडतो. पण प्रत्यक्षात मात्र तो ज्याच्या अंगी असतो तो माणूस फारसा कुणाला आवडत नाही हाच अनुभव येतो. कुणीतरी दुसऱ्या कुणाच्यातरी बाबतीत स्पष्टवक्ता असणे सर्वांना मानवते. व्यासपीठावरून भाषण करताना तर हा गुण प्रकर्षाने जाणवतो. सर्व श्रोत्यांकडून पसंतीच्या टाळ्या मिळतात. पण प्रत्यक्षात दोन व्यक्तींत एक स्पष्टवक्ती असणे म्हणजेदुसरीचा दोष न घाबरता सांगणे असाच प्रकार होतो. मग तो फटकळपणा ठरतो. कुणालाही सहसा न आवडणारा. एकाच नाण्याच्या या दोन बाजू. छाप आणि काटा. स्पष्टवक्तेपणा हा त्या सामान्य व्यक्तीच्या नशिबी काटाच होऊन येतो. सार्वजनिकपुढाऱ्याच्या नशिबी मात्र तो छाप होतो. आम्ही सामान्य माणसे. तेव्हा पिंडातूनआलेल्या या स्पष्टवक्तेपणाच्या दोषामुळे आम्हांला मात्र मिळणे किंवा कुणाचे प्रेममिळणे फार फार कठीण. इतर लोक आम्हांला सदेव टाळतच असतात. फारच खरेबोलताता ते 'तुमची भीती वाटते' असे स्पष्ट सांगतात, इतकेच.

३) मला वाटते, औदार्यामागे विचार, सद्‌सद् ‌विवेकबुध्दी नसते. कुणालाही पटकन काही देण्यातला निर्भेळ आनंद तेवढा असतो. या आनंदाचा छंद लागला, की औदार्य हा त्या व्यक्तीचा अविभाज्य घटक बनतो. हा फार मोठा गुणच मानला पाहिजे. कारण त्यातून स्वतःला सुख लाभतेच, पण दुसऱ्यालाही लाभच होतो, आनंद मिळतो. शिवाय, त्यात समाजविघातक असे काहीही नाही. औदार्यामुळे स्वभावाचे काही कोपरेघासून जाऊन जीवनाचा पोत छान तलम बनत असावा.

4) स्वातंत्र्य याचाच अर्थ मनपसंद बंधनं स्वीकारण्याची मोकळीक!

What a splendid book! Read a marathi book cover to cover after about 2 years and boy was it rewarding!

So honest and transparent writting about the time of her life. I loved the book and the author and the questions raised all over in the book. It was like reading a diary of a person. Always aware of what is happening inside out. Complaining a little but then again coming back to reality that there's no use of that here. Lifelike!

Recommended to buy it and store. There is too much valuable text useful and any point in time to all of us at some time.

I was always curious and wanted to know about this lady; who is a wife of famous personality P.L. Deshpande. She has done a fabulous job in opening up and being sincere to each chapter she has written.

I also found a very different aspect of P.L. Deshpande, which I never know before. Hats off to Sunita ma'am and her patience for handling all chores. I think, that's what love is all about! She too admires the same thing in the book and questions herself that why she has been doing this for years!

As this book is about incidences, you will come across other authors and famous personalities apart from P.L. Deshpande. That's also an interesting read and again you will come to know she is too open and frank about her views/opinions. Well, it's extremely difficult to talk about such incidences and narrate them as is.

I sort of related myself to her personality in some aspects and that made me read more about this lady. As I made progress, I came across different aspects of her - neat and organized like Monica in Friends, thick skin, a very direct to talk which most of the times taken as rude, practical yet emotional, down to earth nature, self-pride which made her life miserable, social worker, a good decision maker(which P.L. would not have taken), her opinions about life, marriage and beliefs. Her nature to oppose things and seek out for freedom in each aspect helps her to stand out and sort of adds more responsibilities as well.

Her writing style is impressive. (Rather, who I'm to comment on this part!)


We always tend to think that being a wife of such humoristic and a multitalented person would be awesomeness. When you read the book, one will understand perils of being a wife of such person who is kinda childish and immature when it comes to surviving. A very sincere narration! Ending here.

I was avoiding reading of Aahe manohar tarihi because I had some misconception abt book like it is against Bhai(P L deshpande). But when you start reading book, it take you to new world which is really parallel to Bhai... Must read book..
