Taryn's Camera #5

Jekyll Island: A Paranormal Mystery (Taryn's Camera) (Volume 5) by Rebecca Patrick-Howard

Rate this book
**SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE $3.99 vs $2.99!** Jekyll Island is full of ghosts and their need for Taryn is strong... Jekyll Island is known for its fascinating history, as well as its ghosts, but now the two are about to take Taryn on a wild ride she’ll never forget! Jekyll celebrated for its beautiful historic hotel, gorgeous beaches, alligators, wild beauty, intriguing history that stretches back nearly 5 centuries, and its spirits…When Taryn’s hired to paint two of the hotel’s historic cottages she’s excited at the chance to spend the summer on one of the Atlantic’s most stunning islands. After all, she hasn’t had a vacation in years. There’s a formidable presence, however, that stalks the artist and history buff and grasps her within its ominous shadows. The past has never been more alive. It clings to her, taunts her, and threatens her sanity and very life. More than 100 years ago a fire consumed most of the hotel that was once built to be a playground for some of the country’s richest men and women. The culprit was hanged for his crime, as well as for the murder of his young wife Rachel whose death the fire was meant to cover. Is it Rachel’s ghost back for vengeance, or help, or is it something more sinister that clings to the island and claws its way into Taryn’s camera and dreams? One thing is for sure–if she makes it out of THIS place alive, Taryn will never be the same! The depicted page count for pre-order status is inaccurate. The actual book, upon release, will be approximately 300 pages. The fifth book in the Taryn’s Camera series, a paranormal mystery series that revolves around 30-year-old Taryn Magill, a mixed media artist who recreates historical, and often rundown, buildings through her paintings. Her real talent, however, is the fact that she can SEE the past through the lens of her beloved camera, Miss Dixie. Together, they work to solve the mysteries of the places they visit-sometimes with the extra help of the dead. The hauntings and poltergeists are only the beginning of what they find! A little crime noir, a little mystery, a little paranormal-and a whole lot of fun!

Another great read from this author. She never disappoints. I love this series, trying to stretch it out, since there are only 4 more books to go.

A fairly strong installment. The quality of the writing has improved, with vivid descriptions and distinctive characters. The crime was more interesting than a simple murder. There were quite a few hints at promising future plot points.

Though enjoyable (probably the second best so far) it was far from perfect, the plot was fairly predictable, and the internalized misogyny is present, as always. Currently the biggest issue is Taryn's lack of backbone and common sense.

She knew about a crime, and instead of calling the police, decided to keep quiet about it even while the criminals were trying to kill her with reptiles. If it weren't for the ghosts she'd be dead.

I think if, a few days into a job, my boss told me "by the way you predecessor went nuts and said he was being held prisoner by ghosts", I think I'd be a little more miffed that I was just hearing about the unusual workplace hazard then. And I'd have questions about exactly what became of the poor guy. Weirdly this event was never explained, or even brought up again.

Finally, Taryn really needs to dump Matt. He gets less appealing every book, which is impressive, given how he started out extremely unappealing. He wants Taryn to be a damsel for him, hates her self-sufficiency. Needs her to be weak and dependent on him, because if she wasn't weak, he'd have nothing of value to bring to the table. Necessity does not a loving relationship make, and it's all that's holding this one together.

This is my favourite in the Taryn series so far, quite a classic ghost story. The environmental descriptions added good shape and I loved to trail her with Google maps! If I ever went to US again Jekyll Island would definitely be on my list of places to stay.

Curious to see if following books will tell more about Taryn's newly inherited house, I'm so up for some haunting building conservation...

Great story

I love this series, but I do wish the author had a better proofreader. The grammatical errors can be a bit distracting at times.

Fortunately, the stories keep me coming back for more!

Good read

The book is very good and it keeps you wanting more. The only thing that I have a problem with, is it needs to be better edited. I had difficulties understanding what the author was saying in some sentences.

I met the author at the Mountain Mushroom Festival this year, many of her books caught my eye. But I went home with this one. (First book purchase. I’m normally a kindle reader)
This is my first “thriller” book as well. I truly enjoyed it. I started at the end of the series but I could really appreciate that I didn’t have to read all the others to understand what’s going on or know the characters! The ending gave me closure and I will definitely be picking up some more of her books in the future 🩷

Loved it

I have read all the Taryn's Camera books. I have liked all of them but this one was the best. There was a lot going on and a new person who I hope is in the next book. I love how the author describes a location . I want to go to Jekyll Island. She finally visited her aunts home that she inherited. Wonder if that will be where she will be next?

The author seems to be maturing her writing style and narration methods... I am really enjoying this series. There were some annoying inconsistencys in the last book that were hard to get past- this book was much better in that arena, thankfully. And I did not guess the culprit correctly (which I LOVED!). Looking forward to the next installment.

Ghosts, old houses, Lowcountry Islands

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Started reading it one rainy morning and finished it that same day. I have started this series out of order. So, I am going back to read the previous books. Just going to do it in reverse and read book 3 next. LOL.

Very nice!

All 5 of the books on this series are well worth reading. Enough to keep me interested an I'm kind of picky.I just don't think Taryn belongs with Matt. No passion!!
