This is the first American edition of the complete play text as it was performed in Glyndebourne with the stage and costume designs by Maurice Sendak. The Love for Three Oranges, Op. 33 is a satirical opera by Sergei Prokofiev, which premiered at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, on 30 December 1921. It was not performed in the U.S. again until 1949 in New York. The opera is now widely performed around the world. The lovely illustrations are by Maurice Sendak who received the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are; the 1970 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration; the 1983 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, given by the American Library Association in recognition of his entire body of work; and a 1996 National Medal of Arts in recognition of his contribution to the arts in America. In 2003, he received the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, an international prize for children's literature established by the Swedish government.

If you like opera, commedia dell'arte, and Maurice Sendak then there is much to enjoy here. Sendak and Corsaro, in dialogue, explain how they transformed an opera that seemed hopeless into one they loved. The book is full of Sendak's drawings along with those that provided him with his inspiration -- those by Tiepolo.
