From the bestselling LitRPG author of The RPG Apocalypse A gas station clerk at twenty-seven with no future prospects on the horizon, Mike Reynolds is a drop-out with an addiction to video games and a less-than-ideal living situation. Life definitely isn't great, but could it really get much worse? When monsters appear on Earth and begin destroying the fabric holding together humanity, that thought is thrown out the everything is getting worse, and fast. 'Is my world becoming an MMRPG Apocalypse ?' Can Mike make good on his prior experience and carve a foothold for himself as a Necromancer in this RPG world?
I read the author's earlier series titled the RPG Apocalypse. Now we have the MMRPG Apocalypse, and I don't think the extra letters are helping any.
The apocalypse starts like it does in many books. Monsters start showing up overnight. Mike works at a gas station out of town when it starts. A goblin shows up and almost kills him but doesn't, and now he has the former goblin's spear to work with. He meets other people along the way and they kill lots of stuff.
I had some problems with the book that brought it down a notch or two for me. First, there isn't a story. Yes, there is lots of killing and discussions about what's happening, but there is no overall story driving Mike and his friends other than to get stronger. Which means that we have chapter after chapter of Mike and Jessica going out to fight monsters as they try different approaches and learn how to kill different types of monsters faster.
Yes, there is PVP which is nice to see after a few apocalypse stories that omitted that aspect. Of course there are bad guys out there so Mike takes them on along with the monsters.
The second problem is that it felt like the author was purposely withholding key aspects of the apocalypse from the reader. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll say this. I would have expected that in the fictional town Mike lived in that there would be a crystal, or a boss monster, or some other thing in the center of town that if taken or won that would stop the monsters from respawning. It's never discussed or even theorized about.
A minor problem I had is that Mike (the hero) takes to the apocalypse like a duck to water. Everyone else struggles, but not Mike.
Anyway, moving on. The monsters are okay with some unique aspects. Some are taken from Doom (the cacodemon although it's called something else) and the rest are familiar fantasy tropes. I wanted to like this book, but it didn't hold my attention for very long. I would read a couple chapters and move on to something else.
The editing is average for an independent writer. The stats are there and easily to follow, although the list of skills gets long enough that I skipped over it.
Within the first 30% of the book the author made it so 3 separate groups of men tried to rape women. How sexist to think that 99% of men are rapists. All of these instances happened within 10 days of the "Apocalypse" happening... Also one of the nice guys of their group got a gun and somehow immediately wanted to kill the Main character, all in order to take the 4 women in the other room that he just found out about and doesn't know anything about them, for real?!
I have read the author's other books and it's all the same thing it seems. The main character always wants to be THE guild master, he ALWAYS makes the woman the melee/weapon fighter, while he(main character) ALWAYS is the bad ass mage.
After reading the author's books I can tell a lot about the author. They are a Sexist liberal who thinks guns turn everyone into murders, they think 99% of men are rapists. The author also has a control issue/narcissistic tendencies. Always has to be the mage, always has to be the guild master.
I like the world the author builds, however I do not like the poor writing they force in to make things political/sexist.
Really good apocalypse story. Fast paced and full of action with lots of crunchy litRPG elements. Characters are definitely likable but we have have much in terms of backstory development yet. Looks like a good series.
As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
This story would stood out ten or 20 years ago, but now it’s lost in the crowd of other books just like this one. The story is good but not great. There is nothing unique about it that makes it stand out. It’s worth reading the next book to see where it is going.
I read this book before, but Amazon doesn't seem to show that on the kindle unlimited program, and goodreads doesn't seem to show that on my read books list. Also, the kindle apps (on both phones and on the computer) all claimed I hadn't read this book before, so I either read it on another app(which one is anybody's guess), or this book is under another title somewhere. Either way, I liked the story well enough, though I do kind of resent having to read it a second time, that was time spent that could have been another book. In any case, I suspect most LitRPG fans will like this one if they too haven't read it elsewhere.
Enjoyed it a lot. Has potential to be a really good series. Starts with a bang and pretty much never pauses the action. Basically fight, level, gear, repeat over and over. Luckily the fights are interesting and stay in my sweet of detail/ over explanation.
Conversely there is very little in the way of character development or world building. Anything not devoted to gear or class building is quickly glossed over, but that stuff is done well.
Hopefully book 2 will take some time to develop the world, plot, and personalities of the characters beyond the bare minimum.
Great book loved the dog elements to the story, just enough stats and progress that makes you want to read the whole book with out putting it down. I can not wait till.the next book!
I really enjoyed this story. It was imaginative and engaging. It pulled me into the world and made me like the main character. Please read this book. You will not regret it.
Boilerplate RPG apocalypse. Not bad by any stretch, but failed to hold my attention in the face of more interesting books so it took me much longer than it should have to get through a 300 page book.
However, it wasn't a waste of my leisure time, so I'll likely pick up book 2 when it shows up.
I like the situation that the hero finds himself in. And the fact that despite being burned, Mike seems to try to help others while at the same time strengthening himself.
Jeremy has done it again. This story grips you from the very first and keeps the pace throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next.
