As the world crumbles around them, Hannah discovers that the secret Omega relentlessly pursues lies within her family—a secret that could hold the key to altering the fate of humanity itself.
"Extinction Threshold" is a pulse-pounding tale of survival, sacrifice, and the enduring power of familial bonds. In this gripping race against annihilation, Hannah Aldeen and her children stand as humanity's last hope, their actions destined to shape the course of a world on the brink of extinction.
I thought Amelia Hugh did a fabulous job telling this story. She made the tense moments even more tense with her delivery, made the sad moments feel like I was feeling exactly what the characters were feeling, and had me itching to get to the next chapter. There was a lot of science jargon at the beginning and end, but she made it digestible through her calm and succinct delivery.
I had a few issues with the story itself, but those were curbed by the dynamic performance of the narrator.

A riveting, multi-layered story with great characters
Absolutely engrossing! The horribly quick spread of a dangerous virus into the human world is hair-raising. The varied reactions of the many characters are believable.
Hannah's foresight and intelligent preparation for the collapse of our modern way of life is remarkable. Her preparations include their home's location, defensibility, and self-sufficiency, as well as her daily training of the family to handle danger as a well-coordinated fighting unit.
The key characters are interesting and believable. Hannah's drive to keep her teenage children alive and well guides her every thought, word, and action. Equally impressive are her children's loyalty and instant, intelligent implementation of their survival skills. The people they rescue become part of the family, as their long-time friends already are.
You'll end up rooting for each person in Hannah's group through all its transformations.
This one took a bit longer to hook me but once it latched on, the book flew by! Now, I can only hope this stand alone becomes a series as it was fantastic. Climate change and the resultant meltdown of polar frost freezes viruses frozen for millennia triggering a global apocalyptic crisis. Not only are the " zombie like Ragers" seemingly impossible to stop but the multibillion dollar pharmaceutical company Omega has its own agenda and it is NOT about helping save the world's population. Good people are killed even as the human race edges toward extinction.... Then the possibility of a treatment through the blood of a few families worldwide and Omega moves in to apprehend them for their own agenda. A few dedicated scientists are all that stand between them and their final goals! A fascinating speed read! Bravo, Ms. Brady!
I’ll admit, Extinction Threshold isn’t my usual genre, but it was our book club pick—and I ended up really enjoying it. The story hooked me right away with its fast pace, high tension, and sense of urgency that kept me wanting to know what would happen next. It’s filled with action, mystery, and just the right touch of emotion to make you care about what’s at stake. What truly elevated the experience for me, though, was the audiobook. Amelia Hugh did an outstanding job narrating—her delivery captured every ounce of suspense and personality, pulling me straight into the world of the story. Her voice work made the danger feel real, the characters believable, and the quieter moments surprisingly moving. Even though sci-fi thrillers aren’t usually my go-to, this one was a ride worth taking—and the narration made it unforgettable.
Extinction Threshold by author R D Brady is astonishing in a major way. When it comes to global warming doomsayers there are aplenty as carbon dioxide proliferation is increasing as well as ice melting from the polar regions might cause human extinction...eventually. There is only so much oxygen on Earth. However author RD Brady introduces a new danger I have never even thought of as a possibility. What if an old and likely dangerous virus captured into the polar ice aeons ago, can get released into the atmosphere and kill off humans specifically. Wow! That idea is like a solid punch to the stomach. And in Extinction Threshold becomes a reality. A very lethal reality. Add to that human nature, a suspicious business adventure ready to exploit this tragedy and things become even more hair raising. Nightmarish. Phew! I simply could not stop paging. Enjoy!
For a story that touches on some ideas that could be reality in the not too distant future this was an interesting concept. Once you get through the grammatical errors it reads pretty well. I'm a big fan of anything zombie and many end of world scenario stories. I just find them interesting. For me this one was different from others I have read and I felt that a very good effort was put forward in its writing. There were some very good characters and you couldn't help but like and even hate a few. If you are a fan of these types of stories then it is definitely worth reading. I am curious what happens in this world as time goes on.
One of the best post-apocalyptic books I've read...
...honestly, and I read a lot. The characters are so well crafted and believable -- the main character, Hannah, is strong, resourceful, extremely tough, and loves her children unconditionally.
The action is tight and not over done -- it's really character driven, if that makes sense. I mean that every one stays true to themselves throughout the scenes, which are written in an absolutely believable way.
Really, all I'm going to add is: read this book. You won't be disappointed. Respectfully,
Amelia did a phenomenal job making you feel as if the story was happening in real time around you. Every ounce of action or heart felt sob. This story was pretty good. I did feel as though the ending was rushed to finish. The big climax you've been waiting for for the whole book and it was quickly dealt with to wrap it up. But I will say I loved that it was more oriented to the family and morals rather than focused on the "zombie" aspect. Made it really worth the listen on audible with the amazing narrator as well.
This story contains so many scientific facts, its like an explorer's adventure. The Shero, as always, is intuitive and resourceful. Ms. Brady's style of writing draws you in very quickly. I found myself in the story running with them, on edge about possible ambushes and relieved when (we) triumphed over their adversaries. This was a very satisfying, informative read.
This was a fast and interesting read that combined several elements of the post-apocalypse genre, including zombies (kinda), weather challenges, big bad corporations willing to do anything for what they want, and, of course, humans being humans. Don't let the chapter count fool you; each one is only a couple of pages, so it goes by fast. The audiobook is great; I can't recommend the narrator enough!
If it is written by RD Brady, it is worth reading. In Extinction Threshold, you find a well thought out adventure that could be all too real, a family you wouldn't mind being part of, and a peek at part of what is wrong in the world today. I very much enjoyed reading this book.
This is a good book, save for the political moralizing. The author slips into lecture voice in several passages. She lectures us that humans are bad and have already destroyed the earth. That said, the character development was excellent, the plot was credible and the pacing was on target. It’s annoying that a major detail is left a mystery in the book and provided only to “subscribers.”
I really hate having a requirement of how many words I must write. All I really want to say that this is a good book. The characters were intelligent unlike so many of the apocalyptic books I have read. Some books I have to force myself to try to finish but this one was a page turner. Hard to put down sometimes.
I enjoy Brady's smart, strong and sensitive female protagonists. They are more like the real women I know than others.
I'd read the Belial series and enjoyed them but became oversaturated with them, so I was eager to see what would happen with a new storyline, new setting and new characters. I very much enjoyed it.
I have read all of RD Brady's novels and all are fascinating. However I'm finding this one to be by far her best ! Totally gripping and the character development is spot on ! So looking forward to the next in this series !
As always, R.D. Brady provides characters you care about and a thrilling story combined with factual science backed with a little imagination. Another great read!!
R.D again takes us on a journey chased by a group who wants what they do not even know they have. Along the way they meet and help others all building to a crescendo at the end. Based on a possible result of global warming it was a very entertaining story and fun to read.
Great story, like it was written from the perspective of someone without a lot of knowledge of firearms. Also, using bows and arrows was better than packing pistols for our heroic family. Liked how hearts can change, once they see true evil. Loved the book.
It took me longer than usual to finish this book because I didn't want it to end. Great story line ,plenty of action and especially great characters. I really hope their is a book 2 .
Overall a good read! The beginning got me hooked with the lab, but I wish they would’ve explored that a little more then delve into Hannah’s story. Overall it felt kind of rushed and predictable, but overall very good.
This was a good story with excellent character development. As always, RD did her homework and used facts in the story to make it more realistic and make it scarier.
What an amazing book. It was so well written, lots of details but not so many that the book gets bogged down. I was hoping this might be part of a series, but alas it is a standalone.
It’s exactly how you’d imagine big buisness, and society, would react. Great read, all of RD Brad’s books are fascinating. Seriously, you need to read this novel.
Terrific from start to end! Filled with love, courage, strength and family, it makes you not want to put it down until the end. And then you’re longing for more.
