Fantastic! Doyle takes the reader through the major themes of Vatican 2’s significant documents in a logical, comprehensible, and eminently readable style. Short chapters keep things moving when a topic may be of less interest. Although designed as a university textbook this doesn’t read as one. Doyle elucidated several areas of Catholic theology that even in RCIA had been lost on me. He takes a very outwardly neutral perspective but lets through a relatively liberal theology on his own part, without seriously questioning official church teaching. He helps make some of the “hard teachings” more digestible by explaining the context for church teaching. Doyle takes large complex issues and breaks them down into bite size summaries that somehow don’t lack substance. Would recommend to anybody interested in contemporary Catholicism and a must for any Catholic who wants to understand their faith better!
