Note: I've read up to volume 7 of A Stepmother's Märchen in Japanese. I've tried to use the proper spelling of names in English, but some may slip my notice. And any lines that I quote will be translated from Japanese, but they may differ from official English translations.

The story starts with Shuri, our resilient heroine. Widowed at the age of sixteen after her aged husband, Johannes, dies and now is left to take care of her four step-children (the eldest only 2 years younger than her) alone. And don't worry, Shuri's relationship with Johannes, while complicated, is not romanticized in any aspect.
Shuri's relationship with the children starts off on the wrong foot and remains rocky. 7 years pass, and now Jeremy, the eldest, is getting married. But Shuri is unexpectedly told that she is not to attend the wedding and to leave the estate. Hurt, but maintaining a positive attitude, Shuri quickly packs her things. From now I'll enjoy my life to the fullest, she thinks to herself. This is a new start!
And then she awakes with a start. She slips out of her bed. The room is dark and her head pounds. A scene flashes in her mind. The carriage door opened suddenly. A vague figure, holding a blade. She shakes away the image. Why I am in bed? She stops in front of her mirror, deep in thought. Then she looks up. Her reflection was... younger. A maid comes in and informs Shuri that the funeral will begin in 2 hours. The funeral?
As it turns out, Shuri had somehow been sent back in time to the funeral of her husband, Johannes. In this second round of her life, Shuri is more confident. And she ends up repairing the fractured relationship between her and the children.

As the story progresses, we are given more glimpses of Shuri's past. Her past relationship with Johannes, the children, and her family.
This story is truly a beautiful work of art. Not just in the art itself, but also in the story-telling. The characters are fleshed out and developed. There is romance, but it builds up slowly. Which is perfectly in-line with the actual characters themselves.
