A colorful book about pysanky showing hundreds of designs never before published. Symbolism, traditions and techniques are discussed in detail. Over 250 eggs are photographed in color. Soft cover-perfect bound.
A beautiful book about an exceptional art form. There are many photographs giving many breathtaking examples of pysanky, but the joy does not end there. A solid introduction with detail about Ukrainian history, Ukrainians in the USA, symbols and traditions in the Ukrainian culture and traditional Ukrainian stories make this book a joy to read. The detail about making such decorated eggs is practical and concrete - I would like to try making one at some stage, just to see whether it is as easy as it sounds to create something as beautiful and tidily decorated!
This looks like it has good information, based on what I know of the craft, which is not a huge amount. I'm not sure all of the folkloric and anthropological information is accurate, but it is interesting. And there are many many many gorgeous pictures, plus information about some techniques I didn't know about before, like bleaching or rinsing eggs to get white or lighter colors after darker colors.
This is part of my pysanky-making "kit." Great for anyone from beginners to those (like me) who've made the eggs all their lives and appreciate some beautiful examples and good ideas/techniques.
