It's a bit difficult to review this book because while I read it, we are also watching the companion DVDs in our Sunday school class. In some areas, the DVDs are better, and in other areas, the book goes into more depth than the DVDs. Overall, the book is good, with some deep Biblical truths about marriage that I've never heard before. And just to bolster this, our co-teacher who is a 70 year old Bible genius said the same thing about the DVDs, so it's not that I have a lack of Biblical knowledge. I gave it only three stars because the book was a little dry for me, and by the end I was speed reading just to get finished with it. But overall, I'd recommend these materials to anyone who is married or thinking of getting married -- it's good stuff.
This book tried to do a lot in not a lot of space. Evans delved into a variety of topics--such a variety that I sometimes got whiplash while reading, but not so many that he lost his thesis: marriage is supposed to be a haven, a paradise. Will it be perfect? No. But should we work at it with our spouse so that we are each other's safe place? Yes. I appreciated this principle; while I think he could have narrowed down his list of topics to cover (he left no stone unturned!), this is still a good book I'm glad I read.
Our Secret Paradise is a smoothly written book. Not only is this for people who are married, but also for ones preparing or waiting to get married. Jimmy Evans does a great job of explaining the realities and challenges of marriage while articulating, through his authorship, how all of this can be beneficial for a fulfilling, fun and supernatural marriage lead by God.
The concept of this book (that a good marriage is like living in a secret paradise land) motivates me to want to improve my relationship, no matter how good it already is. But beyond that, the book is nothing special.
