Kyle’s life is a complete mess. His wife of 10 years has decided she wants a divorce, leaving him unsure of what to do next. After receiving word of the news, his long-time friends-Vic, Joanna, Connie, Steven and Carmella- show up one afternoon in hopes of lifting his spirits. Though they’re brought together by unfortunate circumstances, there is one small it gives the old gang an excuse to get together and let loose like they used to.
A group of loving friends. A few bottles of alcohol. A drunk and distraught host. What could possibly go wrong? Everything!
In a strange turn of events, a gleeful get together turns into all-out war! Harsh words are exchanged, physical threats are made, and confidences are betrayed, reminding them that no dirty deed remains a secret. With their friendships now hanging in the balance, each of them returns to their respective lives where one by one, they recall scandals from their pasts, and in some cases, their present.
They will all begin to question who should really be seeking forgiveness for their Kyle or themselves.
Kyle and Hannah have been married for 10 years; however, Hannah has decided to divorce Kyle and while he is having a meltdown she sends in reinforcement to help get him together. Those reinforcements are his long time friends Vic, Joanna, Connie, Steven and Carmella...but on this night when they all come together to be a support, Kyle flips the script and out of anger he shares some secrets he shouldn't have. This causes a rift in the friendship and has everyone leaving Kyle's home angry but on their journey to their individual destinations the friends replay the night and it has them thinking and revisiting the past. Let's be honest, we have all had a moment with a friend or two or three where we spoke the truth and said things our friend(s) weren't ready for. Is it the truth that's the problem, the delivery, or the person's willingness to receive said truth. B. Martin is truly a master at her craft. Her writing skills will draw you in and have you visualizing the whole book as if it were a movie. I truly enjoyed this book and I hope someone gets a hold of a copy and makes it into a movie. #GiveItARead because you won't be disappointed...AND THAT ENDING...WHAT!!!
In the Company of Hypocrites immediately caught my attention because it isn’t just about a group of friends; it’s about what happens when long-buried truths finally claw their way to the surface. Kyle’s heartbreak sets the stage, but the real tension comes from the people who show up to comfort him and end up unraveling right beside him.
I like how the story digs into the messy parts of friendship, loyalty, and the secrets people pretend don’t exist. The shift from a supportive gathering to a full-blown emotional explosion sounds chaotic in the best way, the kind that reveals who people really are when everything polite falls away.
What I find compelling about In the Company of Hypocrites is how it turns a simple moment of support into a night that exposes everyone’s true colors. Kyle’s pain is the spark, but the real fire comes from his friends, people who claim loyalty yet carry their own hidden stories and unresolved guilt.
The idea of a friendly gathering collapsing into arguments, accusations, and broken trust gives this book an intense, dramatic edge. It shows how quickly emotions can spiral when old wounds are opened. I like that each character is forced to confront themselves, not just each other. It feels honest, messy, and very human.
There’s something very relatable about the chaos in In the Company of Hypocrites. Life falls apart for Kyle, and instead of getting the comfort he expects, the night brings out the truth everyone has been running from. The friendships feel real because they’re flawed, full of love, frustration, secrets, and mistakes.
I appreciate stories that explore how people change when they’re pushed to their emotional limit. This one seems to dive deep into regret, accountability, and the question of who is truly innocent when friendships start breaking apart. It sounds like a gripping, character-driven drama that keeps you thinking long after the final page.
