Did Not Finish
December 21, 2025DNF at page 14.
It takes a truly special kind of awful to have me quit a horse book that's only 40 pages long (including the front matter.) However, just about every mark a bad story can have cropped up.
* Way too many exclamation marks.
* Talks about a boy horse spreading his legs wide to "do a gigantic wee." Not sure why a gelding would do that, which makes me think the author really doesn't know much about horses.
* A school pony has the bad habits of biting, bucking, apparently showing off his boyo at inappropriate moments, and more. In the real world, such a pony would never be allowed go be riden by students, unless the stable owners are suicidal.
* The title calls Madhead a horse, when in the story, he's a pony. Make up your fekkin' mind, luv.
* An evil twin ... I wish I was kidding.
* Grammatical errors galore, starting in the very first sentence of the About the Author Page:
Jean Murray has found her passion in writing in her mid 40s.
So, according to the sentence, Jean only writes when she's about 45 years old. Once she hits 47, she'll stop. We can only hope.
* Random punctuation marks.
* Page long paragraphs.
* An acknowledgements section that fills the entire page in tiny print.
I have to revisit the About the Author page. We already read the first sentence. Here is the second and final sentence. Except for adding italics, I have not changed this in any way. You might not want to read this if you are eating:
She takes delight in sharing the knowledge that when you believe in something that you can do and if you work really hard on it then the outcome will be successful.
Jean, Jean, Jean ... it would take ages to dissect everything wrong with that sentence. So, to save time, I'll just write the third sentence for your next book.
However, Jean does not delight in knowing that she's a failure, since she can't write her way out of a wet paper bag.
