Louis Dearborn L'Amour was an American novelist and short story writer. His books consisted primarily of Western novels, though he called his work "frontier stories". His most widely known Western fiction works include Last of the Breed, Hondo, Shalako, and the Sackett series. L'Amour also wrote historical fiction (The Walking Drum), science fiction (The Haunted Mesa), non-fiction (Frontier), and poetry and short-story collections. Many of his stories were made into films. His books remain popular and most have gone through multiple printings. At the time of his death, almost all of his 105 existing works (89 novels, 14 short-story collections, and two full-length works of nonfiction) were still in print, and he was "one of the world's most popular writers".
A simple and well written book. Audiobook listen is just 5 hours.
It was refreshing to read a book that focused on action and skipped the hundreds of pages of nonessential setup.
Barnabas Sackett finds some gold coins in England and is forced to flee to the New World to escape a man that wants him dead. The first book in the Sackett series.
I've read this book several times over the years. I like it. Louis L'Amour is probably my favorite author. I discovered him as a teenager, have like him ever since. Now I am working my way through the complete Sackett Series once again..
Easy 5 stars for me! It reminded me what books 5 stars deserved. Anyway, I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait to read the whole series. Just the beginning of the early beginnings of America and it’s discovery. Loved it!
I absolutely loved this book. Barnabas Sacket is such an amazing character. I avoided Louis Lamour growing up because I wasn't drawn to westerns back then. When I did decide to try it out I started with the first book in the Sackett Series. Sacket's Land begins in Elizabethan England . Baranabas was a "Freeholder" A free man owning land in a class below the gentry but above peasants. He was free but stifled by the constraints of a class system. When he finds finds some ancient coins in the mud, he finds an opportunity to improve his state. He also draws the ire of powerful people just for stepping out of his station. The story quickly becomes a thrill ride, as Barnabas must rely on his wits, friends, and skills with a blade to survive and find the freedom he wants.
The book is written in such an approachable manner a pleasant and fun read.
More like 3.5. I love Louis’ westerns. I have since I was a kid. This was different. I’ve been meaning to read the Sackett books for a while and I look forward to seeing how it develops.
I loved these as a kid. Makes for super easy, enjoyable reading that doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is - action, adventure, and very little else.
