Helen Kirkman

Helen Kirkman has always written stories - at home, at school, during the lunch break at her local government job, on the back of an envelope in a queue at the bank...

Her sister was the first audience for adventure stories inspired by "Ivanhoe" (knights in armour) "Robin Hood" (rogues) and Star Trek (where no man has gone before). Through each step in Helen's life - travelling, a university degree in languages, marriage, various administration jobs - the stories kept coming.

When her two sons got a little older, she decided the moment for a career change had arrived at last. The "breakthrough" came when Helen won the Clendon Award for best unpublished romance manuscript. Harlequin bought her story and she now writes colourful historical stories for their mainstream romance imprint HQN Books.

Helen’s passion for colorful history provides the perfect backdrop for the powerful emotion in her writing. All About Romance nominated her as a Desert Isle Keeper and she recently finalled in the Australian Romantic Book of the Year Award. The Historical Romance Writers website called her work both emotional and memorable, “with attention to historical detail that brings the past to life in a way only Helen Kirkman can”.

Helen’s early life was spent in England near the ancient walled city of Chester. She now lives in New Zealand and still travels (writing provides the perfect excuse!). She recently spent some time back in Britain, where she visited a Viking battle site, spent fascinated hours at the British Museum and ate too many pub lunches. She fell in love with the vibrancy of New York on the way home.

Bentornate Fenici!

Holy fruit bats...this book was so boring. I have a serious aversion to not finishing books. I pretty much never give up on a book once I start it. While I didn't hate this book, I am so far from any fond feelings for it as a whole that I cannot in good faith recommend it to anyone. I felt like I was always missing something, that so many of the heartfelt conversations were repetitious beyond reason, and that the timing was off for virtually everything. The damaged Ash, the sheltered and denied little brother, the naive and stubbornly oblivious Gemma, the man-boy sidekick, the evil dude Erik...there was potential for all of them but nothing ever seemed to come together. Descriptions went on for eons, resolution was weak, proposals sucked, confessions were lame, missions were made to seem so important and came to completion despite no one actually working on them...so much was lacking in this book. I'd give it a 1 star rating if something pissed me off, but it was more disappointing than anything, so it gets rounded to 2 stars.

Inghilterra, 872.
Roba vista e rivista insomma.

Omg, it is true. When the word moist is overused it makes a story really stink. This book had a plot, but ugh. I would avoid this one. It is bad even by normal Harlequin standards. I couldn't hardly tell when they were kissing or doing the deed. Avoid. Repent!

An overwritten tale of when the Vikings tried to take over England and the only thing standing in the way was Alfred the Great and his troops.
This writer has a definite style that she has honed in later books, but here in one of her first it was almost two much. A lot less description and talking and more action would have helped.
Ex; The book opens when a woman finds a wounded man at the edge of the forest. She decides then and there to save but we have to wade through a page or two about how hot she finds him before she thinks he might be a Viking and not an Englishman.
She's supposedly a goldsmith who must produce for a Viking to ransom her young brother, She names wounded guy her husband and the goldsmith.
He's on mission to uncover a traitor.
But that doesn't come clear til later, much later, as these two do a lot of thinking, and little talking and most of that at cross-purposes, ie "the fragile trust."

What a strange book this is! First, it's set in the Dark Ages, when the isles of Britain are under near constant Viking invasion - not a popular time period for most historical romances. And the writing style is strange and dream-like - there are little to few clear statements of fact or action. Instead, everything is described in the context of thought and shape and description, which left me feeling a slightly dazed and out of sorts. Perhaps this was deliberate, for it lent an air of other-worldliness to the text that would not otherwise have been there. But for this, I would have rated this a 5-star read. Bravo.

With the long descriptions of everything and everyone, I couldn't believe this book was published in 2005. It seemed more like the genre of 1985.

The book was a very difficult read. I kept getting lost on who was talking, and I had to go back track to figure it out. BElieve me, there was a lot of talking.

I suppose the history was authentic, but I wouldn't know because the time period was of 879 or somewhere along there. Not my cup of tea.

This is the first book in the Warriors of the Dragon Banner. It was the first time I read Helen Kirkman, and I really enjoyed. It takes place during the Viking era. While the action in the story really didn't move me at all, I did enjoy the relationship between Ash and Gemma. They were what kept me reading.
