the best terrible poems I've ever read. And I mean that. no library is complete without "touch me"... honestly, I couldn't have a party or a stand-up comedy gig without doing a reading at random from this collection. It just wouldn't be as fun.
Like a lot of people in these dark times, I've been turning to poetry as a salve. Did I know Suzanne Somers was a thespian (yes), a fitness entrepreneur (of course), but a poetess (sadly, I did not). What she does to the English language is truly unbelievable. Consider her poem "Extra Love": But one thing is sure: If anyone has any extra love Even a heartbeat Or a touch or two I wish they wouldn't waste it on dogs. I read this to Squirt and we're still not the same. Or her poem "Houseplants": Once I thought that plants were only color in the room To hide a crack or pick up patterns in the floor, But now I know they're children, lovers, friends, They're intimates and enemies and, maybe, something more. Well, I've never looked at my cactus the same....But it's her many (many) poems about love that will stay with you--there's "Extra Love", "Last Night It Was Right" (I think you know what 'it' is here!), "Maybe Tonight" (and she's not talking, maybe tonight let's order Chinese!), or "Two Week Love" (about a love affair that lasts two weeks): It was only two weeks But we loved God, how we loved Until you had to go back home With gifts for the children. Were truer words ever spoken?
I had this on my bookshelf since the early 80’s. When she died last week I pulled it down and reread it. Reminded me of years gone by and being a twenty something. The photos add to these poems-especially now that she’s gone.
