The Dakota prairie is so big it can swallow you whole. The sky is so blue it may well be an ocean above our heads..."Something About Sophia" captures the spirit of a pioneer woman who braved new worlds and changed her own world with inimitable style and grace. Author Josie Blaine captures this moment of bravery based loosely on the story of her own deep past. You won't be able to put this book down!
It is a beautiful story and one that I enjoyed reading. I loved how you could walk along and as an observe on Sophia's journey. I highly recommend this beautifully written book.
I really wanted to like this book and at certain moments, I did. There were just too many moments that felt like the story hadn’t been refined enough (I did read a first edition). There was also a couple things that made me think some of the historical documents had the wrong dates (which happens). At one point the narrator says she was nine when her brother disappeared and it had been ten years (so she would be 18 or 19). Then her mom gets injured and she takes care of her for four years but she’s 18 when her mom dies.
Also, names would come up as if we should know who they are but they are never explained to us.
I like learning about life on the plains and the connections of multiple generations but they were very vaguely connected.
