Rate this book
This volume of English Heritage Research Transactions is devoted to the traditional stone slates found on some of England's most attractive and historically important buildings. The first paper presents an overview of the problems of supplying traditional roofing material, following the closure of the many quarries and delves which provided stone slates to local communities over the centuries. This collaborate paper describes a model for reinstating original stone slate sources, and managing them on a small scale to satisfy local needs. The second paper is an extensive overview of the stone slate industry in England, organised geographically and geologically. It describes the types of stone roofing material used traditionally in previous times and today, identifying their sources and current availability. The paper ends with a number of recommendations aimed at increasing and widening production. The third paper is a case study of the reroofing of the church of St Michael and All Angels, Pitchford, Shropshire. It concentrates on the winning of a new supply of stone, from the search for a source, to its quarrying and final production into roofing slates. The paper also includes an investigation into the failure of the previous roof and a description of the construction of the new one.

Chris Wood’s Stone Roofing: Conserving the Materials and Practice of Traditional Stone Slate Roofing in England is a meticulous and engaging exploration of an often-overlooked facet of our architectural heritage. The book delves deeply into the history, technology, and craftsmanship of traditional stone slate roofing, offering both scholars and practical enthusiasts a comprehensive guide to understanding and preserving these invaluable techniques.

One of the standout aspects of Wood’s work is his ability to bridge historical detail with modern conservation practices. The narrative not only documents the evolution of stone roofing but also emphasizes the importance of maintaining traditional skills in today’s rapidly changing construction landscape. Wood’s thorough research and engaging prose remind us that every slate has a story—a connection to the past that modern building practices often neglect.

A particularly intriguing element of the book is its discussion on the selection and sourcing of quality slate materials. While the focus remains on traditional English practices, the insights provided open the door to appreciating alternative materials. For instance, the concept of spanish slate emerges subtly in the discussion as a noteworthy complement. Known for its durability and aesthetic appeal, this alternative can offer an appealing option for those looking to marry time-honored techniques with a slightly different material character.

In summary, Stone Roofing is a valuable resource for anyone invested in the preservation of historic building techniques and materials. Chris Wood has crafted a work that not only educates but also inspires a renewed interest in sustainable and historically informed building practices. Whether you are a conservator, architect, or simply a lover of history and craftsmanship, this book is a must-read that challenges us to look at our heritage with renewed respect and consideration.
