Pride and Persuasion #2

Propriety and Piquet

Rate this book
He's a con artist. She's a brat.

George Wickham has few morals and even fewer scruples. He planned to seduce and marry the youngest Elliot sister, but somehow she has turned the tables on him. Will Mary entrap Wickham before he realizes how their family fortune has dwindled?

Meanwhile, Colonel Fitzwilliam is on the hunt for a thief and a traitor. He wouldn't put any of it past Wickham, but it seems the trail is leading toward a more respectable suspect. Colonel Fitzwilliam and Caroline Bingley have only been casual friends, but she has a quickness for secrets. Soon she is right in the middle of his investigation, for better or worse.

This Regency romance weaves together mystery, spies, and Bath ballrooms for a satisfying and unstoppable read. Friends to enemies, friends to lovers... it all happens at Bath.

Hello! I'm Corrie Garrett, indie author of the Austen Ensemble trilogy and other romance novels. I'm currently working on a story about the characters of Mansfield Park, as well as an historical fantasy in the Byzantine Empire.
I love to read as well as write - mainly young adult (contemporary, dystopian, adventure, science fiction), romance (Christian, suspense, historical), science fiction, and urban fantasy.

Excellent

Very entertaining variation of Col Fitzwilliam and Caroline Bingley along with the players from Persuasion. Mystery with some humor and light romance. I re-read Book 1 to know what was happening sin it was a continuation of events started in first book. The Darcy and Elizabeth romance did not continue and other than a mention or two of it, it ended in Book 1 with their engagement. To me, that was a little disappointing that it didn't conclude with at least the announcement of their wedding since Regency romance normally ends with a wedding not just an engagement.

This book follows Starch & Strategy, a mashup of Pride and Prejudice with Persuasion. In this one, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Wickham, Mrs. Younge (now Mrs. Deering), and Caroline Bingley are the only characters from P&P. The rest are the Elliots and a few secondary characters. Everything happens at Bath (which is the correct way to say it, according to Richard). He has been given an assignment by the Home Office to find an important military document and the person who stole it. His partner in the search is Bertie Cooksen, a Bow Street Runner.

Wickham continues to pursue Mary Elliot, unaware that her father is deep in debt and unlikely to be able to produce her 10,000 pound dowry. When Sir Walter refuses to consent to the marriage,

Cousin William Elliot, the heir to Kellynch, courts Anne, even though the expectation is for him to marry her older sister, Elizabeth. Still remembering Captain Wentworth, Anne is reluctant to accept. She is not in love with him.

Caroline Bingley is a twin of Elizabeth Elliot. She is staying with the family and goes everywhere with Elizabeth. After her disappointment with Darcy, she has set her sights on Sir Walter. She still seeks status and prestige. This is a much more complex Caroline Bingley than in P&P. She is more intelligent, more perceptive, and more interested in the arts and architecture than in needlework and gossip. When she understands what Richard is trying to do, she helps him with her own sleuthing.

Wickham, Sir Walter, and William Elliot are among the main suspects, along with a few men from French families. Searches are made, along with discrete conversations to tweak out information.

This series is unique, with little resemblance to Austen's books, except for the characters' names and some of their personalities. Although there are numerous grammatical errors, it is otherwise well-written and engrossing. There will be a Book 3 in 2024.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a Pride and Prejudice variation. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a continuance from Book 1 so read Book 1 before this as they reference events that happened in Book 1 in this book. He's a con artist. She's a brat. Read the second installment in the "Sweet Regency Saga" to find out who dupes who as Wickham tangles with Mary Elliot. This Regency mystery involves spies, lovers, disappearing documents, friends to enemies, friends to lovers, and it all happens at Bath.

George Wickham has few morals and even fewer scruples. He planned to seduce and marry the youngest Elliot sister, but somehow she has turned the tables on him. He follows the Elliot family to Bath, but will Mary entrap Wickham before he realizes how their family fortune has dwindled? Can Anne prevent them? Meanwhile, Colonel Fitzwilliam is on the hunt for a thief and a traitor. He wouldn't put any of it past Wickham, but it seems the trail is leading toward a more respectable suspect, one right within the Elliot family. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

Really enjoyed the first book so had to have a go at this one too. It was an easy read and I like how the author combines characters from two of Jane Austens books, Persuasion is a favourite of mine so I was excited to read this one. It's strange when reading and trying to place characters from different books together but they did come together in the end and it was an overall enjoyable read. I think I preferred the first book more than this one but it was still a great story overall.

Steady Stream of Action

A steady stream of well plotted action keeps the second in the series from getting bigger down in explanations.
Some strong developments of minor characters of the original books.
Good read.

mystery

This did keep me guessing. I’m not sure how I feel about retellings, but I seem drawn to them. There were a lot of plots and sub-plots happening in this book. Most of them were resolved and there was interesting character development.
Clean, historical romance.

Omfg. The wait for Wentworth was worth it!! Picked up the pace in the back half. The romances and friendships make sense. I wish someone would do the whole Austen universe together. Would love to have Mr. Knightly in the mix. Feel like Emma and Caroline would be friends.

nice, but not enough Wentworth

I read through two books, but there was only about a page of Anne reuniting with Frederick. Although well written, I am not interested in continuing.
