Witness Lee (李常受, pinyin Lǐ Chángshòu) was a Chinese Christian preacher associated with the Local Churches movement and the founder of Living Stream Ministry. He was born in the city of Yantai, Shandong Province, China, in 1905, to a Southern Baptist family. He became a Christian in 1925 after hearing the preaching of Peace Wang and later became a close coworker of Watchman Nee. Witness Lee moved to Taiwan in 1949 as the Communists were advancing in mainland China. During the 1950s, his ministry extended throughout Southeast Asia and in 1962 Lee moved to the United States, relocating the base of his ministry to Southern California. He gave his last public conference in February 1997 at the age of 91. Many of Lee's spoken messages have been published in over 400 books and translated into more than fourteen different languages. Lee's major work is Life-study of the Bible, comprising over 25,000 pages of commentary on every book of the Bible from the perspective of the believers' enjoyment and experience of God's divine life in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Lee was also the chief editor of a new translation of the Bible entitled the Recovery Version.
A lot of my life I was focused solely on gaining life, knowing the Lord, having a personal relationship with the Lord, etc. However, this book has made me realize that my character is very important to serving Him. If I want to dispense life to others, my character has to be adequate. Like how a pitcher can't have holes if it wants to store and pour water. What we want is the water, the treasure stored inside of us, however it'll be hard to do anything with the water without a proper pitcher. A lot of young people should read this and develop their character.
Our character is composed of our inborn disposition and acquired habits while we are being raised up in our country, culture and tradition. Our character greatly affects how much we can be used by the Lord. the extent to which our function can be manifested, to which we can be useful to the Master, depends on the extent to which our character has been built up. we may think the most important matter in our Christian journey is how much we have grown in life, or how much we have been saturated with the divine life. this is true. However, we also need to pay much attention to the building up of our character. Life and character are closely related. Character cannot replace life, but surely charcater determines how much life we can retain in our vessels. Life can influence our character. if we are willing to cooperate with the working of this divine life within us, we are allowing the Lord to build up the proper character in us.
It's a very serious matter when it comes to serving the Lord. I appreciate how brother Lee says in the book that "in principle, our faithfulness and diligence in serving the Lord should exceed our faithfulness and diligence in other business." We are vessels of mercy to contain God. Therefore, while we're ministering to others, we should not minister according to the vessel but to what's in us the vessels, which is Christ. Nevertheless, it's very important that vessel is proper as a container. That is where character comes in. May the Lord have mercy on us to see our shortages and have a determined will to be willing to change.
I recommend everybody who wants to serve the Lord to read this book. This book exposes me of who I am (not). I'm not genuine, I'm not strict, I'm not exact... but praise the Lord! We can be in the ministry and receive such light!
