We all love turtles, so our girls jumped at the chance to read about them. This book provides a lot of information about turtles, tortoises and terrapins and includes lots of colorful drawings and photos of these creatures in the wild. With only 24 pages, there isn't room for too much detail, but it is enough to tell about their lifespan, physical characteristics, their preferred habitats, and the differences between freshwater and sea turtles. It is also a cautionary tale about human impact on them.
Turtles and tortoises can be compared to frogs and toads - one lives in the water (turtles) while the other lives on land (tortoises). I didn't learn much in this magazine that I didn't already know. Most turtles don't live to adulthood because other animals dig up their sand-laid eggs. Turtles have skeletons that are built into their shells. Tortoises can't withdraw into their shells, so they have leathery skin to protect themselves from the sun. Turtles have flatter shells than tortoises. They have no teeth. They eat fish, plants, ducks, and frogs.

Zoobooks always deliver a comprehensive and interesting presentation of creatures at a kids' level and this is no exception. My youngest loves turtles and keeps spouting off things he's learned from this book about turtles.
