We see dead people.

The six Vicknair cousins are mediums, helping ghosts cross over. The powers that be set each ghost a different requisition to transit into the greater beyond and one of the Vicknair cousins to help finish the task.

Now it's Gage Vicknair's turn. The ghost of a stabbed girl, Lillian, can't cross over until she saves her friend, Makayla Sparks from the man that had abused Lillian, Makayla and two other girls in the orphanage when they were little. That man has apparently escaped from prison and wants revenge on the four women that had helped put him behind bars. Lillian was his first victim, but apparently he went after Makayla first, the traumatic experience causing the girl to lose her memory.

Lillian knows where to find her. She goes by the name Kayla now, and lives in a shelter where Gage's cousin works. Gage and Lillian arrive just in time to save Kayla from her assailant clutches, but when Gage meets Kayla's eyes, he has another shock coming. She is the same woman he's been dreaming (and doing much more in his dreams with *wink wink*= about for the last two weeks. And it seems she's been having the same dreams.

But before making those dreams come true, and for Kayla to actually have a future, Gage must finish the task given to him. Save her life and help Lillian cross over.

This was an interesting take on the usual ghost lore. The ghosts are those souls that didn't accomplish their "goals" in the life span allotted them, but in this book (or series), they have help. The Vicknair cousins are there to help them finish their missions and transit to the other side.

This was an extremely sad story, actually. About four abused girls, now women, still dealing with their traumas from the past. And with a different take on the things - without the ghost, without the Blaze line - it would've been a great, and poignant, read. Unfortunately, the ghost and the fact this is something out of the HB line, diminished its appeal, and almost ridiculed the initial (serious) premise.
I just couldn't grasp the point of Gage, a trauma surgeon and a man who (in his words) basically needs sex to function, being a hero in a story about a woman molested as a child. And I just couldn't fathom how that same woman, that's been afraid of getting close to a man all her life, could have sexual dreams about a total stranger and then trusting him from the moment they've met.

Sure, the characters were well-drawn, the pacing good, the sex hot, but I just couldn't get past my initial reservations, and couldn't quite bring myself to actually enjoy the story that one the one hand strove for compassion from the reader while demeaning its purpose at the same time.

Forgot to finish reading this book. I got busy and shelved it. This is what I like about Goodreads, it reminds me to finish what I started. Ok so what I think about this book. I think this is better than the other books in the series. It has action and suspense. Since there’s a killer on the loose.

This seemed like a sexy, romantic premise, but St. John delivered it in such a mechanical manner that I hardly enjoyed it. I might try one more in the series; I hope it has a little more heart than this one did.

Gage Vicknair has enjoyed women immensely, but when he starts dreaming of one particular woman and begins to feel what sex is like when it isn't meaningless, he gives them up and begins to wish he could find his dream woman. He finally does meet her when his spirit, Lillian, leads him to her, trying to save her life from the man who molested her and three other little girls when they lived in an orphanage. His dream woman, Kayla (along with Lillian and the other two girls) were responsible for putting their molester behind bars. But it seems that he's back and trying to take his vengeance. Gage and Kayla both immediately recognize one another from their dreams and slowly begin a real-life relationship. But their focus is not on the relationship - it's on keeping Kayla and the two other women alive while being chased down by a monster.

This ends up being a pretty decent suspense novel. The women are chased down by the villain, rescues aplenty, gunshots, near misses and even a sting operation. It was riveting it that respect and I honestly couldn't put it down. I certainly wanted to know what the mystery surrounding the villain was and I had all kinds of suspicions . And, as always, I enjoyed watching the interactions among the Vicknair cousins, who as I get to know them become more and more intriguing. Where this story fell kind of short for me was in the romance department. For a Blaze story, it was decidedly short on steam. There are some dream episodes, some self-administered experiences and one sexy time with the two of them together (involving a physically uncomfortable location that would have had me worrying about snakes and other creatures). But beyond that there really wasn't any relationship angst. The two came together, recognized each other and that they were pretty much in love and stuck strong together throughout the story. There was a bit with Gage getting comfortable with Kayla's past (sexually) and her gradually showing that she's healing. It was still good, but I wish there'd been a bit more tension between them.
