I wanted to like this book more than I did, despite the fact that paranormal romance isn't usually my thing. I love the paranormal genre as a whole but like to keep it divorced from my appreciation for romance. Maybe I'm balking unfairly at Twilight. Who knows.

Having said that, I was willing to suspend my disbelief and give this book my attention. All in all, the "mystery" of the relationship between Dax and Celeste was interesting enough (though it was obvious early on as to what was happening). What frustrated me from the get-go however, was Celeste's straying from typical spectral behaviour without any sort of explanation as to why. Even when the mystery of her origin is explained at the end of the book, St. John fails to resolve her contradictory qualities. As a result, it left me feeling as though there were problematic, albeit convenient, gaps in the storyline that allowed Dax and Celeste to interact intimately - gaps that would not have been left unresolved in standard paranormal fare.

Weirdly, I'd read some books from this series before... In this one, a medium falls for a spirit he believes has crossed over. Only, she comes back for a visit! Both are determined to be together, but they have different ways to achieving it. Which way will work, and which way will tear them apart forever?

The first time Dax Vicknair met spirit Celeste Beauchamp, she was helping him with a little girl needing to cross over. They both fell a bit in love during their week together, but when she left, he assumed she'd crossed over and was gone forever. And he's been miserable since. Then she accompanies another child spirit needing to cross over and he realizes he has a second chance. This time though, he realizes that many things about Celeste are different from typical spirits. And he's determined to find out why so that they can finally be together on this plane.

And while Dax is determined to find a way for them to be together, Celeste seems entirely focused on simply having sex. Every time Dax wants to talk about how to make her stay permanent, Celeste keeps insisting they have sex so she can FINALLY know what it's like to be with him. But for all of that it almost sounded at times like she just wanted to have sex with an experienced guy and so it felt like she was using him. For me, she came across as selfish because, even knowing that too much "interaction" would send her back (with him having absolutely no idea if she'd ever return) she just kept going for more interaction. Seems to me if she really loved him she'd want to spend as much time with him as possible trying to work out possibilities and sacrifice penetrative sex, at least until she knew those possibilities weren't going to happen. So I had trouble liking her. The mystery of where Celeste is, isn't much of a mystery, but it was interesting to see Dax and them trying to deduce what was so different about it. What I do like in this story, was the interactions between the Vicknair cousins - this family dynamic is a strong one and very enjoyable to read about. I also liked learning some more of the specifics about being a medium (how Dax only works with children or how spouses become mediums as well).

I knew it! That was the problem and the solution. But I was curious what happened in the past. This pure fantasy story was after the hurricane Katrina. It’s funny reading this when it’s been nothing but bad weather for weeks now in my area.

Eh, could have been a lot better, but it wasn't terrible. I liked the characters well enough, but the story plot was somewhat iffy.
