This is not just a boy book. And it is not just a girl book. It's not even just a frog book. This book is for anyone who has had to find an "outside of the box" solution to a big problem. Henry and Sam Swallow have a problem, a big they do not have enough players to field their beloved baseball team. The good news is that they are not willing to give up and throw in the towel. Instead, Henry comes up with a plan that involves a frog, his sister, and a whole lot of sneaking around. Will his plan succeed? We can only hope.
I love that this book is not a 'boys' book, nor a 'girls' book; but is a book for all children. I also love that the story breaks stereotypes of female gender roles. And, since I love frogs-for me-this book is a win, win, win. The book has a simple story line that will capture young minds with it's relatable characters and imaginative narrative. How It Happened In Hotterly Hollow is a delightful picture book written by the Canadian author, Tracey L. Coutts. Through both words and pictures, the story conveys a message about gender bias and stereotyping, all within the very tight space of 38 pages. Lastly, as one of the story illustrators, I can confirm that no frogs were harmed or mistreated in the making of this book.
