I read this one with my daughter as part of a school program. We thoroughly enjoyed the book, particularly the wordless sections looking at what the mouse was eating. It was a simple tale, but the illustrations allowed for a lot of discussion.

Compared to the other Pamela Allen's books, this book is unique and sets itself apart. It doesn't have many words. The pictures tell most of the story. It is cute and engaging, although unfortunately, not as fun or hilarious as some of the other Pamela Allen's books (Bertie, One Sunday, A Lion in the Night, Bertie and the Bear, Is Your Grandmother a Goanna, just to name a few).

The story follows a one-night adventure of a little grey mouse. It sets the surreptitious mood from the beginning. The mouse tip-toe creeping, peering, peeking "shhh! Little mouse." After by-passing a snoozing giant cat, the mouse began his marvelous food frenzy: first a jar of cookies with bright pink icing, next was watermelon, pumpkin, cheese, bread, green apple etc. This ended with a thrilling wild chase by a cat, before the mouse scurried back to his little hole for safety.

This book makes a very good story-telling session. The story has all kinds of emotions and moods: quiet and careful, excited and wild, anxious and nervous, peaceful and settled. The colorful and yummy-looking food pictures are captivating and make the young kids smile. 20 month-old little-AJ seemed to follow the story well, and was happy looking at the pictures depicting a variety of his favourite foods.

This is a cute story about a mouse who ventures out of his hole and eats some food while the cat is asleep. He knocks over a water glass and the cat chases him back to his hole.
There are no words on the pages of eating, so it opens up discussion with the little child you are reading it to about what he's eating, the colours, etc.
The words that are there are quite poetic and the illustrations are lovely.

This is a picture book of very few words with images that mesmerise. I can only marvel at the mystical mastery of Pamella Allen's illustrations.

It is the middle of the night when the little grey mouse peeps out of his hole in the wall in search of food. Everyone in the house is asleep. Little mouse has to sneak past a sleeping cat; an extremely large ginger cat. He tiptoes into the larder and enjoys a smorgasbord of colourful food: biscuits with pink icing, watermelon, pumpkin, cheese, bread, an apple, strawberries and a blue berry pie. Little mouse is just washing it all down with a refreshing glass of water when he accidentally wakes up the ginger cat. What he has dreaded the most has happened and now he must run for his life.

Apart from being a perfect story to read to pre-schoolers, this is also an excellent book to encourage reluctant young readers who find the paucity of words comforting and the picture storytelling enchanting.I read it with the young students (5-8 yo) that I teach. They are enthralled by the bravery of the little grey mouse.
