The Girl at the Party

Rate this book
Slamming the door shut behind her, Stephanie takes one last look at the party where her best friends are busy celebrating. As the drinks are poured and music blasts, she disappears into the darkness alone. Some say she was crying. Others think they heard an argument that night. But we never saw her alive again…

Ever since our best friend Stephanie was found murdered four years ago, I’ve been haunted by the feeling that I should have done more. The eight of us at the party were inseparable—and we always thought she was the perfect one. The one who stayed out of trouble. The one who always looked out for us…

But when we discover more about the events leading up to that fateful night, I realise that our friend was far from perfect. The golden girl was keeping secrets. Secrets that someone would kill to keep quiet. The more I learn about that night, I realise I never really knew her at all.

And as we get closer to the truth of what happened, the threats start. A warning message is keyed onto my car. Then the house is broken into, and my belongings are destroyed. The killer is watching us, and they are coming out of the shadows…

But when I find out that Stephanie knew her killer, my blood runs cold. Are they closer to me than I could have ever imagined? And just how far will they go to make sure the truth stays buried forever?

Writing is a way to make a lot of different people do exactly what you want them to do. When I can’t get my toddler to listen to me, I turn to my characters. They always cooperate!

I currently live in Charlotte, North Carolina with my husband and seven year old son. I have perfected the ability to write in a noisy house and create story lines while folding laundry.

Ten Things to know about me:

1. I have a fear of whales. All whales. The noise they make. The sight of them (even on tv). I don't think this phobia has a name and I've never met anyone else who feels this way. I blame it on the 3D movie when I was 7 at the Boston Museum of Science. (Thanks Dad.)

2. When I get hungry it brings out the worst in me. My friends and family know to keep me well fed. They pack snacks now.

3. I can cook but not bake. Not even a little. Not even a box of brownies.

4. If there is a song I like it is normal to hear me listening to it a hundred times (give or take) in a row.

5. I do not, under any circumstances, read directions. Who has time for that? Making mac & cheese by the seat of my pants for the last 25 years.

6. Like a black-out drunk, I have lost hours of my life mysteriously to Pinterest. If you haven't tried it yet... don't. Save your self.

7. Before I became a mother, lots of things grossed me out. Now nothing does.

8. My favorite food is food... my least favorite food is no food. I love food. (apply the same rule to wine)

9. I do not have a green thumb. I have the kind of thumb that kills any type of plant ever given to me. Whatever kind of thumb that is... I have it.

10. Writing has changed my life. Not just the career it's created but the way I feel when I write. If you have something you love to do I hope you get the opportunity to do it.

Four years ago Stephanie was at a party with seven of her best friends. She left early and was murdered that night. Her case went cold.

Chris now with a podcast show of his own, asked a mutual friend Laura to help him solve the mystery of Stephanie's death.

The Girl at the Party kept me guessing. There were misdirections and red herrings along the way. I like the steady pace. The characters could've been developed more, especially Laura's brother Jake. The rest of the casts are easily distinguished. I enjoyed this popcorn thriller quite a bit.

The podcast section which drew me to the book was a bit letdown. I was hoping there were more podcast episodes and as an audiobook, maybe they can add something to the voice and really make it sound like they are in a studio, on air or something that stood out. But there was none of that. Overall I thought Stephanie Cannon the narrator did a terrific job with so many characters.

Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for this ALC.

A party, a group of friends, and an unsolved murder come together creating a character-driven whodunnit. I enjoyed following the clues as the murderer’s identity came to light. Who had a motive to want to kill the poor, unassuming Stephanie? Little did she know that her killer and friend were one of the same. The narration and podcast element added to my overall enjoyment of this slow-burn thriller. Thank you Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for my audiobook.

5 years ago, Stephine was murdered while walking home from her friend's party. The cops never looked deeper into it. Assuming it was another robbery gone wrong. Since a similar incident had occurred before.

Now Chris and Laura, Stephine's college friends, teamed up to find the truth behind her murder. Friendships were put to the test and hidden secrets were finally revealed.

This was a quick and engrossing read, with a couple of twists at the end. If you're a fan of slow-burn mystery/thrillers then this is the novel for you!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Danielle Stewart, and Bookouture Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

I was very excited to discover another new author to add to my list.

The Girl At The Party, was a gripping psychological thriller that kept me hooked with its many twists and turns.

5 years after Stephanie's unsolved murder, Chris gets in touch with his old university friends. He is planning a podcast in an effort to find out who killed their friend Stephanie.

The story has two timelines, the present time and back to the night of the party where Stephanie leaves and does not return.

As more evidence is brought to light, we discover that each of the friends have their own secrets, that they are desperate to keep buried and will do anything to protect themselves.

I will definitely be looking out for more of Daniel Parker's books.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a quick and engaging read. It centers on Chris and Laura, who are creating a podcast to draw attention to the unsolved murder of their friend Stephanie 5 years ago as they were getting ready to graduate college. The research they do causes them to look more deeply into their tight knit group of friends who were all together that night at the party where Stephanie was last seen.

I liked the podcast concept of the story and the alternating timelines that brought the reader along with the things that happened that night. I wish I had gotten to know the characters better- Stephanie, in particular was one I felt I never really understood, but I also found it extremely odd that this group of so called best friends lost touch with each other after school. I also felt like some the secrets they were fighting so hard to keep weren’t really all that earth-shattering. That being said, the book moved at a fast clip and there was a good mystery around what really happened that night. I had it partially figured out so it wasn’t a huge surprise but was still well written.

Overall, I liked the book and went through it pretty quickly. It’s fast paced and twisty and I would recommend to those who like psychological thrillers (and mystery podcasts!). Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

The narration of this book worked very well with the description of the characters. Stephanie Cannon has a very clear voice and I had no trouble listening to this book within a day! The story is about two estranged friends that start working together on a podcast to solve a murder of a common friend from college where they were all present at a party years back. It has an interesting plot that I found entertaining, but maybe because I read so many books, I saw the twist coming very early on, though some may not. If you’re into psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators check this book out!

Unfortunately this book wasn’t for me. The blurb sounded excellent but I found it very slow and because of that I had no interest in what was happening and I found the characters to be very wooden. I found myself trudging through this book and I was glad to finish it.

A close-knit group of college friends. A final party before they leave. Unfortunately one of the group, Stephanie, leaves the party alone and is murdered. Her killer has not been found. Years later one of the group decides to turn the spotlight of their podcast to Stephanie’s case.
Through interviews, interactions and flashbacks we piece together the events of the party that end in Stephanie’s murder. It’s clear that people are not telling the whole truth, and it was quite entertaining to watch the details get fleshed out.
Though the idea was interesting, the group of characters were hard to find endearing. As we learn more about them, they become less likeable.
We do, eventually, learn the truth but even this was tinged by the unlikeable aspects of key characters. Sadly, the whole thing felt under par. Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this - I wish it had lived up to expectations more.

This is an interesting thriller, which I enjoyed. The narrator was fantastic (Stephanie Cannon always is).

The story is about some friends who used to go to college together. Chris has set up a new podcast series exploring what happened to his friend Stephanie at a party they were all at. Chris connects with Laura, and together they try to solve the case. Of course, there is a lot of drama and suspense. Will they find out the truth?

This is a good book, which I highly recommend.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

"The Girl at the Party" by Danielle Stewart is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The story follows a group of friends haunted by the murder of their best friend, Stephanie, four years ago. As they delve deeper into the events leading up to that tragic night, they uncover a web of secrets and deception that shakes their perception of Stephanie and each other.

The author skillfully weaves together multiple plot threads, creating a complex and intriguing narrative. The pacing is spot-on, with each chapter ending on a cliffhanger that left me eager to read on. The character development is exceptional, and I found myself emotionally invested in their lives and the quest for truth.

The protagonist, Laura, serves as the lens through which the story unfolds. Her determination to solve the mystery and her involvement in a true crime podcast adds an extra layer of tension and intrigue. The dynamics among the group of friends are realistically portrayed, with rivalries, secrets, and simmering tensions that keep you guessing about their true motives.

Stewart's writing style is engaging and immersive, painting vivid scenes that bring the settings to life. The twists and turns throughout the story kept me guessing, and the revelation of the killer's identity was both shocking and satisfying. The suspense builds steadily, creating a palpable sense of danger and suspense that will keep readers eagerly turning the pages.

"The Girl at the Party" is a masterfully crafted thriller that will appeal to fans of the genre. With its well-drawn characters, intricate plot, and relentless suspense, it's a captivating read that will keep you guessing until the final page. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a thrilling and immersive reading experience.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Girl At The Party' by Danielle Stewart.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Danielle Stewart, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 12th July 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

This novel consists of a prologue and 42 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

'The Girl At The Party' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Danielle discusses r@p3, Ch1ld @bu$3 and Self H@rm1ng.

This book is a slow burner but it is also ram packed with tension, drama, twists, lies, mystery, friendship, secrets, red herrings and much more! The storyline is about two friends Chris and Laura who present a podcast to try and solve the cold mystery of their friend Stephanie's death. It is told through multiple narratives as well as multiple timelines which gives the reader a larger picture of what is going on. I especially enjoyed listening to the actual podcasts themselves and thought they were an excellent concept and addition to the storyline. This is the second book I have read that focuses on podcasts to try to solve a cold crime so, although it is not a unique storyline for me it is still an enjoyable and interesting one. The suspect list is quite small so you are continuously guessing which of the small group is a killer. There were several twists throughout the book. Although the book was slow to begin with it did pick up speed quite quickly and I enjoyed the unexpected twists and even the ones that were not a huge surprise. The ending was definitely unexpected and did leave me mind blown and considering how many crime books I have read that is definitely a huge bonus as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me. I am looking forward to seeing what Danielle comes up with next!

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture

This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Stephanie Cannon who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Stephanie did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Danielle but also to listening to more books narrated by Stephanie! I have previously listened to several books that Stephanie has narrated and she really does do an absolutely amazing job ensuring the story comes to life for the reader. The books I have listened/read that Stephanie has narrated and I would highly recommend are The Homemaker by Shari J Ryan, The Marriage Counselor by Dea Poirier, The Ex Wives by Jenna Kernan, My Big Fake Wedding by Jessica Hatch and The Child Of Ukraine by Tatyana Denford.

The characters were all realistic although I would have liked to see them more "filled out" as, personally some of them just fell that little bit flat for me. This normally puts me off a book but the twists and turns and Stephanie's fantastic narrative skills made it easy to look past this fact. I wasn't a huge fan of many of them and I was annoyed by the way Jake was treated and portrayed in regards to his disabilities. It is this part of the book that lost star ratings and the reason I gave a 3.5 rounded up to a 4 rather than a 5. The characters are all hiding their own secrets and this is a book filled with lies, twists and one where you have no idea which characters are telling the truth or who are hiding secrets so I won't go any deeper into my feelings of the characters as I don't want to spoil it for future readers.

Overall a suspense packed drama filled with twists you won't see coming!

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free with kindle unlimited, £8.99 in paperback, £39.37 for the Audiobook or £7.99 with Audible via Amazon at time of review, which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

A girl is murdered at a party and the police cannot catch the murderer and it ends up as a cold case. Five years later Chris who is running a successful podcast starts looking into the case again hoping to find the person who murdered his friend.

Chris teams up with Laura to find the murderer. After investigating it is clear that one of his friends is the murderer. A lot of secrets are revealed and threats are thrown towards them. The story is fast paced and it is an interesting read. The concept of finding the murderer through a podcast or a friend being a murderer is not new, but the double twist at the end is really great. Overall, it is a good read and is recommended to all mystery readers.

What to say about this story?????
I do have to say, when I first started the book I had issues with who was who. As I read on it got easier.
The story is told in two timelines of past and present. Past being the actual crime/mystery and present a pod-cast looking into the murder.
It was so so so twisty…..with so many secrets, lies and coverups.
I didn’t see that ending coming at all!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Girl at the Party was an interesting, kind of slow burn mystery that featured an ensemble cast and a shifting POV between our male and female leads, Chris and Laura, as they try to piece together what happens the night of the murder of their college friend Stephanie for Chris's true crime podcast.

On the whole, I felt like the framing device of the podcast wasn't really necessary and there could have easily been another external reason for their investigation. The shifting POV was used well to clue us in that certain characters knew more than they were letting on, and were only willing to divulge that information to one of our narrators.

I definitely didn't expect who the murderer turned out to be, but I also found that I was surprised when the ending rolled around- not a ton felt like it had happened, and then suddenly it was over! I didn't feel particularly connected with any of the characters. They were all morally grey, but some a LOT more so than others.

On the whole, I would definitely read another book from Danielle Stewart! The Girl at the Party is a good, quick read for a twisty whodunnit not-quite-thriller mystery.

Thanks to NetGalley, Danielle Stewart, and the publisher for the ARC! The Girl at the Party debuts on July 12, 2023!

This is a slow burn. Almost nothing has happened.

I love books that use a podcast to solve a murder (even though I don’t care for actual podcasts) so this should have been right up my alley. I also like stories that flash between “now” and “then” but here it just dragged. I also don’t feel like I know Stephanie at all (I don’t really know anyone but she’s the one I know the least ans since this is about her death, that’s odd).

I’m sure everyone has a secret they’re trying to hide… and there’s probably a Hail Mary twist at the end but I’m
Not interested enough to stick around.

Or perhaps I just can’t read another story about someone dying before graduation and all the friends being suspects and reuniting on the death anniversary.

Thanks netgalley for my ARC ALC

This was a podcast style thriller, where a popular podcast host decided to dive into a case VERY close to home. I loved that everyone had secrets to hide, and so everyone had something to lose. That made me suspicious about everyone, and with good reason. I liked the way it wrapped up, and with the push for abuse to be acknowledged. I did kind of figure it out pretty early, but this was still a great listen. The narrator did a great job, with how many characters there were being voiced.

Chris is a successful true crime podcast host, and this season he’s turning his focus to a case close to home. Right before he graduated college, one of his close friends was murdered. Stephanie was bright and cheery, and was taken out in a fit of violence. He contacts Laura to help him investigate and talk to their group of friends about what really happened at the party that night. But everyone has secrets they want to keep hidden, some dangerous enough to leave threats and escalation of violence as they continue to investigate. Will they be able to piece together what happened before the killer decides to kill them too?

Thank you to NetGalley for this audiobook, all thoughts are my own.

This was a fairly quick and easy read, however I didn’t like or connect with any of the characters. I found the dialogue and character dynamics a bit childish / annoying, particularly the chapters told from Chris’s point of view. Overall not a bad book but would’ve been much a more enjoyable read if the characters were more like-able.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with the ARC of this book!

When Chris approaches his old college friend Laura he already has one successful True Crime podcast under his belt but the new one he wants to do is more personal and he needs Laura’s help at first she is reluctant to get involved with anything having to do with their murdered friend Stephanie but after he talks to her she agrees to do it. Stephanie was murdered after leaving the last party they threw on the last night they were all together in their college apartment. Chris is starting to feel all those old feelings again while talking to Laura until her brother Jake interrupts them. Even though Jake interrupting is something he did all the time back in school. Laura and Jake have been close because growing up in a dysfunctional family with a demented mother left the Laura being the only responsible one in the house. As Laura and Chris start the interviews with their old college friends they noticed things they missed sing back then and some things they saw that others missed but once the car to get put on the table the picture it makes it’s not a pretty one and Chris soon figured out one of them murdered their friend Stephanie but who? I don’t know why but I love books about podcaster and this truly was a great one Chris was such a likable guy and lower such a likable girl and I really hope they would get together before the end of the book but you have to read to find out what happens because what happens is OMG a really good ending in one I kind of saw coming but was still totally surprised by the guilty. If you love a good thriller then you’ll love The Girl At The Party by Danielle Stuart I have never read a book by her before but will definitely be looking for them in the future. I receive this book from NetGalley and Bookoucher but I’m leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Danielle Stewart.

Would you sign up to do a podcast to solve your best friend's death if the murder hasn't been solved?

Some school romances last and some don't after the death of a friend.

Stephanie is the girl with the big friendship group but also the girl who left the end-of-school party and never got home.

Our MMC Chris has left school and has now got a successful podcast which delves deeply into unsolved murder cases.
After the success of his last podcast, he wants to return home and solve Stephanie's case.

Laura is our FMC. She remained living in her town caring for her brother instead of following her dreams.
Oh and not to forget she is also Chris' ex and he wants her to join him on the podcast.

Chris and Laura start to relive the events of that final night of Stephanie's life and find out more than the police did.

This means getting back in touch with their old school friends.
But this just alters each person's view of the other.

Danielle Stewart hit hard with being so convincing, she wrote this so well even some of the experienced solvers would not have guessed how this book was going to end.

There are some trigger warnings to come along with this book
SA being the main one.

I listened to this book on ...........
I rated it ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

My Review:
Loved!!!!! So I knew I had to read this one once I finished The Teacher by the same author. That one was really good and I just knew in my heart so would this one. I was totally right!!!!! Let me start off by saying that this read was fantastic and it kept me up all hours of the night just to finish it. I will say though it was not as good as The Teacher but it came very close to it. In fact, I loved everything about this read. The characters were all very shady, the story line kept you hooked and the ending was shocking. What more can you ask for in a book? Nothing, in my opinion. When I first picked up this author I never expected that both of her books would be this awesome but they were. They far exceeded my expectations and both will end up on my Top Ten List this year. I can’t wait for more books from this author.

In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

A slow burn murder mystery. Stephanie was last seen at a party then was murdered. That was 5 years ago and the case remains unsolved. Two of her best friends decide to do a podcast exploring the case and solving the mystery. The deeper they go the more secrets are revealed
This is a quick listen with the traditional telling of the story from 2 pov..Different characters were voiced in a way we believed. I like the revelling of the story through the podcast. I found some of the secrets a tad tame and hard to believe they would have caused the effects they did. In places it was predictable but good selective writing meant i was blown away by the final twist which i didnt guerse.
This is a solid 4 star listen. The use of a podcast gives the story a more interesting take. I would like to have had a few more characters have their own pov rather than 2. Well worth your time just fir the ending.
Thank uou net gallery and bookculture audio for my arc.

The Girl At The Party is a slow burn mystery with a reasonably good twist.
Four years ago, Stephanie leaves a party and is murdered.
The police didn’t really look into the crime and no one was convicted.
Now her university friends, who were there that night come together to find the truth.
One of them is planning a podcast to help solve the mystery.
While interviewing the people that were there on the tragic night, it soon becomes very clear that one them is guilty of murder.
A story told in two timelines, the now and the night of the party.
I didn’t mind this one and overall did enjoy, just didn’t love it.
The plot is a little lackadaisical and at times tends to dawdle.
There’s moments of clever but it’s far and few between.
The twist was smart and the ending was a little bit anticlimactic.
I will definitely give another book a go by this author.
In general it was above average and kept me reading until the end.

It’s 2013, and the friends are celebrating their senior year at the house on Winfield Lane. It’s an evening to relax and enjoy, but that’s anything from what happens… little so they know one of their own, Stephanie, is brutally murdered. Now that’s all anyone can think about when it comes to that evening. Chris, who was there, has made a name for himself in the world of true crime podcasts, and looks to the murder of his friend for his next viral story. But as he begins talking with his old friends he realizes that it’s own of their own that is responsible for her murder.

Overall, I really enjoyed this audiobook. I just so happened to have a lot of driving time and finished it in less than 24 hours. The story was easy to follow, and the narration was enjoyable to listen to. I would not consider this to be a “deep” book, but I did find the discussions of rape and trauma to be worthwhile. I would like to consider myself pretty good at figuring out the “killer” in these types of mysteries, but I kept guessing until the end, which I certainly can appreciate. My only gripe is that this book fits a similar mold to others in this genre. But nonetheless very enjoyable to listen.

On a night when a group of friends are celebrating the end of their time in university, one of them is killed.

Flash forward several years, and the case has gone cold. So have the remaining friendships. After one member of the group, now a true-crime podcaster, decides to use his resources to try to finally find her killer, secrets they all were hiding start to be unearthed.

This was a decently engaging if not exactly ground-breaking thriller, with enough action and suspense to keep the reader’s attention. I feel like I’ve read this story a few times before, but I enjoyed it well enough.

Stephanie Cannon did a good job with the audiobook narration.

Thank you Danielle Stewart, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for providing this ALC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.

If you love "A Good Girls Guide To Murder" I highly recommend this book!

You follow Laura and Chris in this story. A few years ago, they and a few other friends lived together in college. One night, when there was a party, their friend Stephanie got murdered...

Chris has a true crime podcast and wants to find out the truth with Laura's help.

There are TW for this book (murder, self-harm, sexual assault, suicide,…)

Thank you to Netgalley, Danielle Stewart and Bookouture for providing me with this copy. All opinions are my own.

The Girl at the Party by Danielle Stewart
Narrated by Stephanie Cannon was a brilliant and totally addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist at the end. This audiobook had me gripped from the beginning till the very end and I loved it.

The Narrator by Stephanie Cannon was excellent and made all the characters come alive.

I highly recommend the audiobook or the book and a great holiday read.

This book wasn't one that I was able to get fully invested in, and I honestly spent the majority of this book bored. While I did like it and I was surprised at some of the twists, I thought the first half of the book was boring and hard to get into. I never found myself "shocked" really, and I kept waiting for something major to happen. The last 15 pages or so of the book were the best in my opinion.
