In the darkest recesses of forbidden magic, there is opportunity.

The powers of Creation picked an unlikely candidate in Alexander White, a twenty-two-year-old college dropout from a small South Georgia town. The young wizard finds himself the target of an angry faerie seductress, a megalomaniac mage, and a dream-hopping goddess. Thrust into the games of the Fae Courts, Alex must choose to run or fight. The fate of humanity may very well rest on his choice, but can the arrogant, inexperienced spellcaster really stand against the shadow of encroaching darkness?

These are the warnings of Alexander White, the Wizard of Blakely. Take heed and know that death approaches. Hide if you can.

Contains adult situations and profanity.

Was looking forward

I was hoping I found a a new series to read. However this will not be it. Alex has an ego the size of a large country but a the same time I found him to be weak. There's many players in the field to actually be able to enjoy the wizard if you know what I mean. Top that off with really nothing happening beside two fight scenes, I'm just not interested in following the series.

The milieu is Western fantasy, but the mood is Eastern light novel. Anime, even. How so? Let me count the ways:

* Battles with hot sultry girls who are keen on the MC? Check.

* Gravely wounded one scene, back to his badass self the next? Check.

* MC’s casual acquaintances with day jobs also happen to be formidable fighters? Check.

* “Gotta keep building my power” as a central motivation? Check.

* Universe-breaking powers are everywhere, but somehow the world still looks a lot like ours? Check.

* MC alternates between braggadocio and self-loathing? Check.

And, maybe most characteristically, everything moves really, really quickly. It’s one lively event after another. There are no drawn-out epic battles. There are no slow-building scenes of romance. There are no long and reflectively emotional conversations. It’s go go go.

And the only respite from it all is the bar room. Which happened to include my favorite moment of the book: “I sipped the Jack and soda in my hand, enjoying the slowly deadening sensation that spread through me. The whiskey’s sweet aroma danced up my nostrils and produced the first smile I had managed all day. The bar tended to bring me a little respite ... It did not look like much more than a dilapidated building from the outside, but the inside was filled with old wooden furniture ... and the ever-present tunes of Frank Sinatra ... The atmosphere made the bar. Add in that it stayed open all night ... and it was the perfect place for a wizard night owl.” Sometimes it’s the slower things.

This is a pleasant and very easy read. When your mind’s feeling like a phone with 8% battery left, this is the sort of book you can get through without running out of energy.

This book has been an entertaining introduction to a new urban fantasy series that breaks with some of the genre's traditional tropes in fantastic fashion. The main character, Alex, is a wizard who runs entirely on grit and self-confidence, and as the story progresses, learns through the school of hard knocks that he's got a long way to go on the road to power. The book has plenty of action and each of the sequences is well-written and full of amusing banter and the protagonist's sarcastic attitude. As the author builds the magical world around the characters there are many hints and introductions to lore that keep it holding an aura of mystery and interest. I am looking forward to reading through the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed this story about Alex, and young wizard, who drew unwanted attention from powerful beings in the Nether world. In a situation where faeries believed humans have stolen knowledge, Alex finds himself up against incredible odds.

With wittiness and character ego, this book is a fun read. I really appreciated how the author portrayed what it was like for a wizard to use magic. I really felt like I was Alex, giving me an experience that will always stick in my mind. I absolutely love it!

Familiar tropes but not bad

There was a lot of action in this, and the action sequences were well written. I liked the characters thought the dialogue was stilted though, too many cliches, like the repeated use of the word "Fool!" by the villain. I also couldn't help comparing this magical world setup with Harry Potter; a secret magical realm on the edge of the human world, a bit finding out he's a wizard after his parents are killed.

It just gets more and more exciting and pulls you in!
The action kicks in early on and keeps on building as the main character gets through one life and death situation just to wind up in another one. This is matched by the other characters in the story who at first come across in a more typical way, then morph into things completely different. Many familiar references to magic but delivered in a fresh way. Looking forward to Thomas White’s next tale!

Fantastic Beginning

I am hooked on the storyline of faeries and mortals. I appreciate it for being very adult in its fantasy but not so gruff that it loses its whimsy. This first book in the White Wizard Story is breathtaking in its speed and length. It will leave the reader wanting more.

A Tale of Destruction and Magic

In a word: fun. This story moves quickly and makes you root for a wizard who is haughty, overly-confident, and still very new against some monumental forces of magic. The author tells the story well, intermingling world-building with plot in such a way as to barely be noticed. Great writing, great story, what a treat to read!

Very interesting!

This is an introduction to a cocky mage who is a little bit unlikable in my opinion. He thinks he is amazing and powerful. I understand that is the trope. All and all it is a fun little read.

Very Good Start

A wizard's life. Fun adventure of a rogue wizard making one wish HP had been as much fun in later books. Fast read and really sucks you in this journey. Looking forward to the next book.

Solid, Engaging Urban Fantasy

This is short and clearly a set up/intro to a longer story, but it’s a tight, fun read with plenty of magic and action. The world and magic system are well-constructed and the characters are interesting and engagingly drawn. Lots of fun.
