Encourage Your Child to Love Reading This book helps preschoolers discover how much fun it is to read. Trish Kuffner shows parents how to make fifty favorite picture books come alive for children by providing a variety of activities that tie into the themes, characters, and plots of the books:
Just reading through this I know I need to buy it or I'll have it out constantly from the library. There are lots of activities for all the stories in it and I'm going to use it as sort of a summer 'curriculum' so we don't get any bored days around here. My 4 yr old loves reading, so I'm sure he'll love having activities, games, recipes, songs and other things planned around the stories. I need to seek out this author- she's a preschool genius and a mom's dream!
There are so many activities listed for The Story About Ping that we've been working with it for 3 days now and I could keep going for several more, although I think my 4 yr old may get tired of it. We're going to roll right into Tikki Tikki Tembo next and overlap with the China information.
I'm using this book heavily at the moment since I don't have to think (and with a 4 month old in the house too, that's good!), although it inspires me to do the same with other favorite picture books that we have/have read. There are also some activities I read about in her Preschool Busy Book that I'll probably use for some of the story activities as well (ie bathtub painting with colored shaving cream for Purple, Green and Yellow).
This book is great for any mother or teacher. I like the activities, and I believe using books to lead into fun snacks, fun games, and heartfelt discussions introduces children to the beauty and fun of a literary based education.
