MICHAEL DOUGLAS: What were you doing on the night of the 27th?
SHARON STONE: What were you doing last night, Shooter?
DOUGLAS: I-- uh--
STONE: You don't mind if I call you Shooter?
DOUGLAS: It was dark. She could have had a weapon.
STONE: She was a yoga instructor, Shooter. They have martial arts skills.
DOUGLAS: Look, there's no need to get sarcastic. I had to make a split-second decision.
STONE: You know, Shooter, I hate yoga instructors. I found out once that my second husband was having an affair with a yoga instructor.
DOUGLAS: And what happened?
STONE: A week later, she got knifed by someone in an alley. Ice pick. They never found the murderer. [Pause] Don't you think we have a lot in common, Shooter?
DOUGLAS: Shut up. I'm asking the questions here.
STONE: Sure you are, Shooter. Sure you are. [She uncrosses her legs] Why don't you ask me how wet I am?
Smut-A-Thon: Forbidden Romance Golden Girls Read-A-Thon: A book published between 1985 & 1992
A word to the wise.
If you're a detective don't fuck a murder suspect.
Its a very bad idea.
This book is a novelization of Basic Instinct a movie from the early 1990's. The movie is best known for the scene in which Sharon Stone's character flashes her vagina. After reading this book its clear to me that, that was the high point of the movie.
I didn't like this book but then again I didn't expect to. I only read it because I knew it would be smutty and...
BOY WAS IT!
The first page of the book has a sex scene that ends in bloody violent murder. Detective Nick Curran(Michael Douglas) is our main character and boy was I wishing for his gruesome murder. Nick is an alcoholic who shot and killed 2 unarmed civilians gets away with it, feels no remorse. Rapes his sometimes girlfriend who is also a co-worker, blames her for making him force himself on her
And Oh by the way she apologizes to him for not enjoying her own rape!
If anyone deserved a ice pick to the heart, its Nick.
Catherine Tramell(Sharon Stone) is suppose to be the mysterious femme fatale that drives our Detective Nick to distraction. I think I would have enjoyed the book more had it been from her point of view. There just wasn't enough Catherine for me. She was a bad ass boss bitch and I loved the tiny glimpses we got of her.
I still plan to watch the movie....eventually. I might enjoy the movie more since campy bad movies are my weakness.
"You know, Shooter, I hate yoga instructors. I found out once that my second husband was having an affair with a yoga instructor."
Basic Instinct Movie
Yes, I also read the book. And yes, I loved it. In all its seedy and sleazy glory.
I did read the book even though I had seen the film and they were pretty much almost identical.
So...... no plot review. Most readers know all about Basic Instinct. But some people may not realize it was also a book. I read it. It mirrors the film almost exactly. I am So glad! Because I am one of those people who ADORED the film.
Is it sleazy? Yes. Is it trashy? Yes. Is it a damn good story? Heck yes!
I always loved the mystery here. And seeing Nick and Catherine go up against each other was fascinating. You have a real battle of wits here. I usually hate all things gory and both the book and the film are VERY bloddy gory!
But You really get pulled in here or at least I did. And I have to say as good as the book is, I'd say the book and film are both powerful and equal to each other.
I have always loved Modern day Noir. And also stories of two strong people at war with each other. I know how controversial this movie was. And I am one who usually, if not always, likes to read the book version of movies that I enjoy.
They really do not differ from each other. The cast is the same. Nick. Catherine.
SPOILERS THROUGH REST OF REVIEW:
Poor doomed Beth.
Beth was a fascinating character to me. I get why she was madly in love with Nick....I mean it is Michael Douglas after all! But she is just the same in the book version and I re ally wanted to know more about her.
So the question for me was always....did Cathryn really do it ? The book ends just as the film does so we think we know. I have heard there was a part two. I had no desire to see it. And I do not believe the book ever had a follow up. But this trashy and gory story had such a perfect ending...because we really don't know 100 percent.
So, although I have a feeling I am in the minority, I stand with pride over my love for this sordid little story. Would like to do a reread of the book soon as well.
I'd love to do a reread but last I saw this book was out of print and cost so much to buy I decided no. I'd love to see it available on Kindle (for a low price). Maybe it is as I have not checked in awhile.
Anyway..I will always give this story four stars. A tangled web of sex, lies and duplicity and a terrific novel.,
This book is a novelisation of the blockbuster movie by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven which is one of those directors I will go to the cinema too totally oblivious of the movie and enjoy the heck out of it nonetheless. So here is my problem with the book itself, Paul Verhoeven delivered a superior erotic thriller with the always gorgeous Sharon Stone whose role actually was the most powerful character in the movie she oozed sex and her character was the leading character for me. The famous shot with Sharon crossing her legs did show her power over men in the movie but also all those men who destroyed their video tape and the pause button on their dvd player trying to see something. As Verhoeven put is quite clearly: "the power of the cunt is enormous". The problem is that nothing in this book oozes sex, it reads like an average thriller in which the leading lady has some loose morals. It kinda takes a lot of memory to restore it up o the level of quality the movie was. So here is my advise, ignore the book and watch the movie which is quite brilliant and well worth your time.
It's a sexy thriller, sometimes. But mostly plotless and in the end, pointless. That's how you end up with miniature reviews: nothing lingers but the literary image of naked Sharon Stone. Who doesn't swivel in her chair during interrogation in the novel.
“Basic Instinct” (1992) Novelization by Richard Osborne Based on the screenplay by Joe Eszterhas
In the interest of full disclosure, I am a huge fan of the film, the director, the two leads, the composer, and even the cinematographer. “Basic Instinct” was a screenplay I read endlessly when I was studying screenwriting. This neo-noir classic is number ten on my all-time favorite film list. If Hitchcock were alive and at his peak in the early 90s, this is the kind of film he would have made.
There is a reason a Hollywood bidding war broke out for the rights to the “Basic Instinct” script. It is a fantastic screenplay with pristine structure, a sensational main character, and knockout, profane-laced, rhythmic dialogue. This novelization captures all of that and adds a sheen of literary flair reminiscent of a great piece of hard-hitting sexually charged pulp fiction noir. Richard Osborne adapts the screenplay with flawless execution, seamlessly blending his own words and style with Ezterhas’s, creating a fast-paced, titillating, addictive read.
As an added bonus, this book comes in a beautifully packaged hardcover with the classic poster art from the theatrical one sheet. Well-worth tracking down and reading for fans of the film or those who love erotic thrillers and pulp fiction.
'LOVE HURTS'............ well yeah, you could say that if your laying in a pool of your own BLOOD with ice pick holes in your neck.....That's bound to sting in the morning###
Nick Curran is on the case. He is so stereotypical its laughable. Ex smoker. Ex alcoholic. Divorced. All we needed was him eating Donuts and drinking coffee and we'd have a BINGO>>>>>>
The obvious suspect quickly turns out to be the dead guys Girlfriend. She's an Author. Not just any author... but an author who wrote a crime novel about a woman who murders her boyfriend in bed with an ICE PICK..... I mean talk about mind-blowing huh?! its almost like a written confession.... I wrote a EMAIL to my boss telling her to lock up her laptop because it 'might' end up getting stolen......I lost my job and gained a CRIMINAL RECORD......that sh*t don't work....
Instead of this book being a 'Who Done it' its more of a 'we know she did it - youd have to have half a head to think someone else did it - but you don't care cos this Nick guy only took about 1 minute and zero imagination to create and because you have the movie in your collection and you remember the funny look the guy in the store gave you when you bought it and start watching the movie cos the whole thing will be over much sooner and you can then think about doing something normal like going out for a walk and actually talking to real people but you decide that sounds a little yukky and you go to sleep in your clothes and dream about puppies....'
Read this about 20 years ago. I wanted to read it to see if any extra information/clues were given that wasn't in the movie. If I remember correctly was exactly like the movie, left you hanging at the end. Liked it 20 years ago, but have not read it since.

Dark, dangerous and somewhat tedious at times, this infamous story of murder and lust definitely had me in the second half - I will say that it's a slow burner and the writing style in the first half bothered me to no end, but it's worth sticking with it, even if the ending is ambiguous.

Meh. I was looking for a good Halloween thriller for the season, but didn't really get a chill from this book at all. (That should tell you a LOT because I'm easily freaked out.) The plot was very, very predictable. The book was okay, the movie was even worse. (How come it was supposed to be such fabulous classic crime movie? It was so boring and felt like it was tastelessly done with all of the nudity and the way they framed those scenes. Director's choice, I suppose, but whatever.) Maybe I felt that this story was too played out since I didn't read/see it when it came out in the early 90s. Maybe I've seen this story over and over again on film and in pages because other people got their storyline from this one originally? I don't know. All I know is: Reading it now, in 2014, it was a waste of time. Won't read it again. (Also, one more movie criticism: Michael Douglas as the lead detective? What the what?! Couldn't they have cast a hotter, edgier more brooding actor in this rough and tumble role? Curran came across as a loose-cannon badass in the book but on-screen he wilted inside the Douglas facade. Boo on that.)
alinea terakhir: Nick thought only of that moment's pleasure; his body's need. He was completely, blissfully unaware of the thin, stel-handled ice pick which lay hidden under the bed.
Apakah Catherine Tramell pelaku sebenarnya? Apakah Nick Curran akan jadi korban berikutnya, atau live happily ever after?
To end or not to end, that is the question. Terjemahan bebasnya: ngegantung, bo!
N.B. baca buku ini nggak mungkin lupa memorable scenes Sharon Stone diinterogasi di kantor polisi dan adegan panas Michael Douglas vs Sharon Stone sepulang dari klub (versi tayang bioskopnya disensor habis oleh LSF, and gw baru ngeh betapa panjangnya adegan itu waktu nonton DVD-nya yang versi Director's Cut).
I liked it. Especially the sex bits. It is also good when Curran grabs some other cop around the throat and tries to choke him to death. Then some other cop puts a gun to his head, and makes him release his grip. But seriously, I read this book a very long time ago. So it is hard to remember it all. It is exactly the same as the movie. But more intelligent.
I've never seen this movie... I've only heard of one scene in the movie that was supposedly super hot. That scene isn't in the book lol. However, this was a pretty good read. Hated the ending, but that's pretty common with me and books in this genre. I did not like any of the cops as characters, but I loved the main female character. Overall, this was a decent read.
The main character Cathrine Tramell is a very unique character. She is very mysterious and doesn't give away a lot. She uses men for research for her books. Nick is like any other cop. This book was pretty good. I didn't like the ending.
