Rate this book
It's a strange thing, desire.

It solidifies itself as a craving that melts into a want before becoming a pool of need that ebbs and flows into a passion. Before you know it, it evaporates into the mist of ache that you inhale as lust. Then you're lost.

Alois Floquet, finds himself quickly enraptured by the brown skinned beauty, Isani Carr, and he will stop at nothing to make sure her every need is filled.

Whether she wants it...or not.

I’ve always been a writer. My Pop-Pop was always my biggest fan and encouraged my love of reading. From my first stories about talking wolves to my first published novels with witches and lost love. Crafting an enchanting and riveting tale is nothing new to me.

As a black woman, I strive to put us on the forefront of romance novels. To put us in fantastical and daring situations that carve heroines everyone loves to read about.

Other than being a writer, I fancy myself quite the poet.

When I’m not doing anything that has to do with writing; I enjoy watching my favorite YouTubers, playing video games and sleeping.

I really enjoyed this read

Dark romances have a special place in my heart. My little heart just eats them up. Also, I love cats and this book had one so I fell in love. Lol. Dark romances and cats are the way to my heart. Who knew?

Let’s get into that cover. Ethereal, menacing. Hauntingly beautiful. Which is the best phrase to describe this story.

Alois and Isani (side note her, but these names for perfectly with both lead characters. Sometimes the names of the MCs make me irrationally irritated and I question why authors couldn’t google better names, but this one nailed it) are star-crossed lovers who are eventually tied to each other after one - and immortal supernatural- becomes unhealthily obsessed with the other. Cue the love bombing, stalking, yandere behaviour. All of which, in the real world, MAJOR red flags. In this story *checks notes* oh yeah, also MAJOR red flags.

Alois is the new French professor at Isani’s college where she is an ecology professor. He sees her, falls head over heels and promptly ensues in all of the aforementioned behaviours. Stalking, obsessing, etc. much to the chagrin of the Math professor and Isani’s best friend- Nito. Nito is one half of the best friend group with the other being Denise. The friendship is good, pretty grounding, but, I found a lot of their conversation cringe and found myself wincing at some of their verbal exchange. Regardless, they’re a tight knit group and that was displayed throughout the story. Would it be a friend group though, if one of the members weren’t hopelessly in love with another? Nope, therein lies Nito’s predicament. He has feelings for our girl Isani, kept his mouth shut and in swoops our DARK knight to feret her away. Forever. More on that later.

Alois makes a deal with Isani for 10 dates so he can get her to fall in love with him. In return, her students can use the greenhouse and land in his family’s mansion for their project. This is a big deal because prior, her class had no place to do their practical classes. She agrees and the countdown begins. We don’t really get an insight into the first 6 or so dates, but we know they’ve been happening once a week and Isani was falling faster than flapjacks my cats swipe after I’ve turned my attention away for a second.

Alois, goes FULL yandere creepy factor and starts watching Isani in her house in his wraith figure where she can’t see him. She feels his presence, but doesn’t know what it is. These scenes are done really well. It felt creepy, violating and increased my heart rate. I felt Isani’s paranoia at being watched, not seeing anything and start mentally talking yourself against the existence of ghosts and spirits. Little did she know…

Tierra perfectly captured the suspense, paranoia, fear, despair, panic, deep regret, longing and friendship in this story. I enjoyed seeing the themes come alive on the pages. Written well. However, some of the traits did not align with who were introduced to Isani to be and who she was. We were led to believe she was a scientific woman. She didn’t even entertain the notion of the world of the occult, chalking it up instead to an overworked amygdala. Keeping this in mind COUPLED with the fact that she had an abusive cheating ex, I find it INCREDIBLY doubtful that she would continue to be interested in Alois after he BLATANTLY displayed red flags. Especially after that restaurant scene. Even worse! As close as she was to her friends who were overprotective due to know her traumatic relationship history, I very much doubt that they would make excuses for the behaviour Alois exhibited. I’m calling BS on that. Author should have had them call out Alois on that and tell Isani to run for the hills. If they did that though, we wouldn’t have a story. So…

I might be in the minority here, but I like Alois. I liked him after he revealed the truth to Isani. He gave dark and I loved it. Lapped it right up. He protec, he attack, but most importantly, he got her back. I understood Isani’s reaction though. Realistic. Who would not lose their minds after learning all of this? Girl, tis naught but your own fault for moving at the bloody speed of light. Come now.

Why isn’t it 5 stars? The story was littered with typos. At first I could ignore it because when a story is good, typos are ignorable. However, they continued throughout. Steadily. Which started becoming a distraction. Sometimes entire letters either missing from words and at that point, I’m a little more than slightly annoyed.

Another reason was that it was hard to follow along and understand what was happening on the page at times. It felt like Tierra (author) started typing something, then her thoughts got jumbled and she never read through to fix the error of a jumbled thought. A scene that stands out with this is the scene with the handkerchief and Jared. I had to pause, squint, reread, then read aloud and I was still a bit perplexed by it.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. 4.5 stars. Loved the ending. I missed Alois. lol.

Very Different Kind of Romance

*****Spoilers*****

For sure an A+ for originality and even higher for the creepiness. Alois is the new French teacher at the school where Isani teaches. She's a professor of ecology I think, with strong beliefs about the environment and conservation. The book starts with Isani in a meeting with the town mayor about sustainability efforts, a meeting during which Isani is sure to tell the mayor what he won't be getting from her in exchange for him granting her favors. We meet Nito and Denise, her two friends, Nito a fellow teacher and Denise the bakery owner. Nito and Isani almost had a thing but a drunken night together didn't yield the relationship results they may have had between them otherwise. They're in this weird place, at least I think, where Nito has feelings but neither bring things up.

Alois starts at the university as a French teacher and his interest in Isani is instant. She's less interested at first and doesn't pay much mind to Nito telling her that Alois wants her for himself. After that, the book gets a more and more creepy with some sex thrown in here and there, all the way until the end. The creepy is the slow reveal that Alois isn't just the handsome new Frenchman with the sexy accent, but is a wraith with a curse and he wants Isani to be his forever. For Isani, Alois is perfect, all the way through most of their weekly dates and his wooing. He's solicitous, helps her at the house, sees to her needs, and gets to her from the inside out. All the while in the background, Alois is getting more possessive and murdery of those that do her harm. He holds off on Nito at first because Alois knows Isani will be broken up by Nito's death and doesn't want her to draw away, particularly as they close in on the ritual that will bond their souls. Just prior to the ritual that Isani knows nothing about, she goes to a spiritual woman who gives all three friends warnings. The only problem is that Isani forgets her instructions when the time is right. In the end, she's unable to destroy the bond with Alois and Nito dies because Alois wasn't happy when after 8 months he came back and Nito had touched what was his.

I'm not sure what the ritual to bond their souls consisted of. They had sex when the veil between worlds was thinnest but there was mention of blood, not sure if it had to be an exchange or if it was satisfied because Isani was close to her cycle. At times it was difficult to really get comfortable with the story, especially when Isani started to jump at everything and get spooked. It worked for this book but I was conflicted as to if I should be afraid with her as she started to notice more weird stuff.

It was certainly interesting and very different this one if nothing else.

Not Your Typical Paranormal Romance

This book did not have the same impact as Beringia. On some levels it felt a bit hallow and the ending was not expanded upon enough leaving the reader to fill in the pieces and draw their own conclusion. I like Tierra Cox and her vivid imagination for the paranormal but this one was atypical.

I really liked BUT

That ending, I dont even know! I'm mixed, torn, if u will. Now that I'm done reading, while I'm mad I'm also content with the ending, could there have been a little more yes but I'm glad that it was unexpected because I sympathized with him and his yearning but I also sympathized with her. It was a great story not your typical romance. Am here for it, definitely recommend🙌🏾

While there were some spelling and grammar errors that could’ve been avoided with more thorough editing, that’s easily overlooked because the story itself was so engaging. This book had fantasy elements, bittersweet romance, and a gothic tone without taking itself too seriously. The author didn’t fall into tropes nor rely on morbid theatrics to create a M(onster)ILF. I loved the dialogue and chemistry between the friends as it was relatable and organic. FMC was charming and firm in her values. This story’s pace was steady and the narrative flowed smoothly, no rocky or dull moments. I like how this author doesn’t just romanticize and gloss over red flags, she actually spotlights the concerning elements of possessive and obsessive MMCs with substantial power. Similarly the FMCs see these red flags for what they are and often attempt to jump out of the pot before getting boiled alive. It really helps the reader consider the moral and ethical dilemmas both within the text and beyond it, a refreshing breath of fresh air within my guilty pleasure genre of choice. A bittersweet ending, but still satisfying (which is surprising because usually I’m a stickler for a HEA). This is the second book I have read from this author and I look forward to reading more.

Isani Carr is an ecology professor that is deeply dedicated to her students and her job. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Alois Floquet, the charming new French professor at her university. Alois is captivating, and Isani quickly finds herself swept off her feet, but as her feelings deepen, she begins to question if he’s truly as perfect as he seems.

This was a chilling read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Ms. Cox does a fantastic job weaving folklore into the story, particularly in the unsettling legend of the wraith and Alois’s mysterious origins. Nito and Denise are wonderful supporting characters who bring balance to Isani’s journey. She captures the paranoia, fear, and dread beautifully, especially in moments when we get a glimpse into Alois’s unsettling psyche. A perfect, spooky romance for the season that I highly recommend

Just My Kind of Guy!

I mean, if she don’t want him, I will take him. This book was amazing and I hope there is a part two because I believe in time, she could definitely change. I loved especially how Isani admits the truth that as a Black woman in this world, having some man at your beck and call, plus all the other perks that come along with him too, might not be such a bad deal after all.

Dark Immortal love😱

This is a new author for me & the story arc was well written, with eye raising twists & turns: featuring a diabolical immortal protagonist😱. This is a 💯 super dark PNR tale, so heed the ✍️s TWs & CWs as this book is not for the feint of heart. The epilogue should have given us a glimpse into how Alois & Isani navigate life, given we have become so invested in their story.

On pins and needles to the end

Alois is a killer you can be sympathetic towards. And that is the crux of the problem. Not that he is the Wraith but that he kills so easily. Part of me wants him to be loved. The other part of me wants him to stop killing. So I feel for the heroine. Because she knows he is psycho.

Different but good

I'm conflicted on one hand I feel like she should have accepted her fate this first time and choose safety and told him not to kill again. But on the flip side I feel like he could have eased her into revealing to the truth, without killing anybody, I could have worked out. Hopeless romantic in me wanted them to be together in the end anyway.

The Wraith

This was not your typical romance story. Very interesting with a little trust at the end. I could have use a little more explanation about the wraith and how he was tied to Isani but all in all quite interesting.

Whew! I am loving these dark romances by Tierra Cox!

Plot is A+ for originality and the smut is great. Loved the ending, albeit it I wanted a bit more depth regarding the supernatural ties.

Loved both of the main characters as well as the FMC's friends. The story was funny, sexy, yet tense.

The book was slow at the beginning. I enjoyed it, but I wish it hadn't ended so soon after the FMC found out he was crazy. I felt that most of it was him stalking her; either way, it was a good read.

I loved this book! I think this fits the “anti-hero” trope and changes how I see a villain. I can’t even explain how this story just turned all the rainbows and butterflies into thunder clouds and made me excited to keep reading. I was surprised at how much I loved the ending. I would love to read more stories similar to this. Alois pretty much forces Isani to be with him and tells her she will grow into their love, again. Alois and Isani’s story is a friends to lovers to enemies, more hatred from her side, which is completely understandable. Alois is toxic af. Cox has opened a new interest in me for stories that don’t end so pretty and happy.
