Me and myself upon finishing this issue

When reading Saga, there are always big moments when everything you know is suddenly tossed into a maelstrom of chaos and nothing feels safe. Even your favorite character might be facing their final illustrated frame and subplots you’ve been following for years might come to an abrupt end. It’s the “Saga moment” and as much as we fear it and know it is creeping up on us ready to spring upon any upcoming page, it is also what keeps fans reading this series. Issue 65 is the Saga Moment of this arc. Two storylines have hit a moment of action and we are bounced back and forth between them as they unfold, increasing the tension and brilliantly juxtaposing events all set to one of Hazel’s “voice-overs.” Another aspect of Saga I find really effective is the way joy never comes without sadness, like they are two sides of the same coin, and this issue captures that quite effectively. There is also a tragic parallel here to the way The Brand died earlier in the series diving in front of danger to save a key character in this issue. You'll see.

This volume arc has been a bit slow up until now but it looks like the plot is heading in for some turbulence and a character that, while minor, has been a fun inclusion since issue one might be gone. And now we wait for next month. See you, space cowboy.

3.75 stars.

“Just because I was raised by pacifists doesn’t mean my family wasn’t constantly fighting. We fought for shelter, for survival. And thanks to the way Mom waged our battles, we sometimes even won. But the close of that day was the first time since [...] that we’d managed to secure the most elusive of victories… an actual happy ending.”

Well, I wasn't expecting that.

From how things had been going I expected everything to take a much more darker turn but I'll admit that the more hopeful, and very ephemeral, I'm sure, the way we close this issue feels well-earned and greatly appreciated.

The composition of the issue in itself, with the way things were placed and where we had the cuts, make this one of my favorite recent chapters, It was very creative and added a good resonance. Plus, I'm always a big fan of parallel narratives.

Certainly, this feels like the end of an era and as if we are about to venture into a new arc. I'm excited.

Oh god we're getting into heavy feels again!

I think I need to just read the trades because it's too brutal reading the chapters a month apart every time.

This was another gorgeous addition to the series. Not sure how I feel about the style choice of alternating the storylines but I think it'd grow on me with a re-read.

Cannot get enough of Staples' artwork. She does phenomenal work.

OMFG, this issue slapped! I mean, ugh... I guess, I can't really say anything, because SPOILERS!
To taunt you, obviously the people you wouldn't be opposed to be killed off (by the narative, not me! Yet...) never do and instead... oh, well. I need the next one, now 🙏🏽

Not rating, because I don't rate single issues per my rule, but... this was a five star.

Saga #65

In this issue, Hazel and Squire are able to escape from the policeman they encountered in the previous issue, but they have to leave behind (at least for now) all hopes of bringing their fathers back to life. At the same time, Alana is looking for them, because they need to leave, to go work in an entertainment ship that's sailing. Far from that, Petrichor is finally able to find The Will and she unleashes her wrath on him.
This was yet another amazing issue in this incredible series. I love to see Hazel and Squire fight and then make up, like siblings do. Their relationship is great and it's only becoming better with every issue. They are evolving into their own characters, but they also keep getting closer with each other. Furthermore, it was very enjoyable seeing Petrichor fight with The Will, even though this story had a somewhat depressing ending. The most interesting aspect of this issue was seeing how relative happiness is. What might be a happy ending for one, is sad for someone else. Of course, that's not a new idea, but Brian K. Vaughan uses it very well, to create a devastating ending to this brilliant issue.
Overall, this was a great and very powerful issue, with an ending that makes me very curious to see how things are gonna continue.

Read as part of Volume 11. Refer to Volume 10 (which consists of issues #61-66) for my full review.

Some preliminary thoughts (before I write my full review for the volume):

- There's a lot of intense action in this issue!
- Between Squire/Hazel and the cop (where Squire's secret lineage is at risk of being discovered), and between Petrichor (who is an incredible fighter btw) and The Will (with Gwendolyn, Lying Cat and Sophie in the crossfire)
- Alana is also on a time crunch to find Squire and Hazel before the circus leaves

- There are some fantastic quotes too, like:
- Gwendolyn being a total badass when asked if her plan can turn the tide of the entire war: "Never forget that Wreath is a moon. Turning tides is what we do."
- And Hazel's narration when comparing one's suffering with another's: "And I get it, everything in life is relative, even suffering. But what if your suffering is caused by a relative?"

The final page with the line about finding their happy ending gutted me 😭

THIS ISSUE!

I don’t know how 66 will top it. I was torn between flipping pages quickly to see what would happen next and too afraid to flip the page for fear of something happening. And something happened. It will take a bit to recover from this one.

I loved the way the two storylines were told in this issue. They contrasted each other perfectly. Gosh, I love this series.

They way I was screaming for The Will to die. This had me at the edge of my seat!

I swear, if anything else bad happens to Petrichor I will be so pissed.

A fast-paced, action packed installment in the Saga series that sets up nicely for what's to come next. Good things happen for Hazel, her mother and 'brobot' but it feels like a calm before what will inevitably be the next shi*tstorm. Some key figures die too in a high stakes faceoff. Great art as ever. Looking forward to more soon!

This is a series with a high body count, and we have more loss in this issue--although I am glad it was not the character I was hoping it wouldn't be, if that makes sense.
