Writer and artist DYLAN BURNETT (Ant-Man, Cosmic Ghost Rider) unveils a new prestige comics series sensation, perfect for fans of INVINCIBLE and MURDER FALCON.
Joe, a mysterious new face in Infinity City, has suddenly become the hottest new player at the Round House Arcade. Anyone can challenge him, but no one can win.
But Joe’s secret past is about to catch up to him when his most formidable challenge yet rolls into town, forcing Joe to combo his powers with a joystick, his fists…and his fighting family legacy!
Arcade Kings by Dylan Burnett comes out May 17. Burnett both wrote the comic and drew it, and it’s obvious he’s a fan on anime both in the plot and the vibrant art. The comic follows a teen named Joe who has a strange red face and a penchant for video games. He spends his days at an arcade waiting for people to challenge him in fighting games, which he never loses. One day a challenger arrives who wants to fight for real, and we soon learn Joe’s virtual fighting skills are not just the result of playing games. Joe has a history, one plagued with real life villains and a life he’s trying to escape from. Fans of anime will love the style and gamers will love the plot. Overall it’s just a fun comic. Thumbs up.
Got dang fun ass, good ass, colorful ass time of a joystick ronin I'll tell you what. If you were raised by Beat 'em Ups and fistfuls of quarters there is a high chance you'll enjoy.
This one hit all my sweet spots; the art and colors sold me almost immediately and the story is shonen-inspired lighthearted fun. Love what Dylan Burnett is doing here and hyped for issue 2.
I was excited to finally be able to sit down to this retro arcade story...until I wasn't. I mean, the art was bombastically boom splat pow in your face with that 80s color palette that brought me back but at the end of the day I was craving a good ol' engaging retro story as well - which I didn't get. What I got was some wandering nomad son with button mashing skills who has an estranged has-been sickly fighter Dad that sics some wide eyed tweenie girl on his son with a robot. It just didn't hook me and the pages seemed to fly on by in an environment that was neither here nor there. I'll stick around for another issue or two but for $8 a pop this is gobbling up my quarters pretty quickly so I'll need to save some scratch to play Ms. Pac Man for a bit so I don't leave the arcade feeling like I just wasted my allowance on Dragon's Lair. Arcade Kings has been an exhilarating experience thus far. The use of vivid colors in the comic truly stands out. While the plot is simple and somewhat unconventional, it's quite captivating. I'm definitely looking forward to diving into issue #2.
