Red Flag #1

The Devil of London

Rate this book
Three hundred years ago, I screwed up. I walked into the Sinner’s Den and set it on fire. In doing so, I’d crossed the Devil of London. And the devil does not forgive easily. Worse than that? He always comes to collect his debts. So, when Khaos Nasir appeared at my house, I thought he’d demand my life. Instead, he demanded my soul for eternity.
Now, I intended to topple his entire empire of sin down on his seductive, narcissistic head. Soon, he’ll understand why queens are a power piece on the chessboard. I’m about to remind him just how much damage an angry, vindictive woman can do.
Before humans walked the earth, Aderyn and I were creatures of darkness. She thinks I recently claimed her soul, but she has always been mine. Then the gods made her forget, punishing us both when she crossed them; allowing us to be near, but never together. Now, I planned to do anything to break the cycle and get her back for good. Even if the gods prevented me from giving her what she craved.

Amelia Hutchins wasn't kidding when she said this book wasn't a typical romance!! This was one of the darkest books I've read! But it was also was one of the best books I've ever read in the dark romance genre!!! This is a book full of fucked up situations and even rides the line of erotic horror! With characters that are in your face and unapologetic about what they do or say and MMC like Khaos Nasir who is something out of a nightmare!!!! With a face of a fallen angel and a body thats big and tatted he draws women like a moths to a flame! And even though they know he's ruthless and deadly and a total psychopath they still want to be in his bed. The first couple of chapters said it all about this demon king! Their Is no line he will not cross and once you make a deal with this devil incarnate he owns you .
Aderyn knows this well. Long ago she sold her soul to Nasir and he has been both her savior and her tormentor for over 300 years! He is a toxic poison that runs through her veins and even with his rough treatment and constant mind games she's still his willing victim. Khaos is without a doubt a monster and his actions overboard and twisted but theirs also more to the story and dare I say a real true love of a lifetime but he does what he does to keep Aderyn at arms length. Long ago Aderyn pissed off the old gods and they cursed them all! Khaos who is a incubus can't fuck Aderyn his wife and mate or it will kill them all ! And each time Aderyn is reborn her memories of before are gone but Khaos has been building a empire and getting closer to getting rid of the curse, but Aderyn just might fuck up the one chance they all have of doing this! She is so full of hatred and revenge for him and the others that she wants to bring down his empire and in last fifty years she's grown stronger and her magic more powerful. The chemistry between these two is nuclear and the steam even hotter and even though its not full blown sex its still explosive and deliciously dark and depraved! The church scene had me questioning if something wasn't wrong with me too! Because Aderyn wasn't the only one enjoying it and wanting Mr big and bad between her thighs too!😅 Amelia Hutchins is a awesome writer who doesn't do romance that is sweet and safe! Her romance grabs you by the fucking throat and doesn't let go until you see stars! I can't wait for book two!!! With a cliffhanger ending that promises theirs more fuckery to come and I'm ready( I think😂)! Until next time Luv's💕💋

Masculine scrawl covered the flesh beneath his ribcage, and more was placed beneath his heart. On the other side, more script covered his ribs down to his abs. “What does this say?
It says ‘For you, I would burn the entire city down to make certain you remained in the light, my soul’,” he murmured. My fingers slid to the other side, and he chuckled softly. “I am her sword, her protector, and she is my entire world. But, for now, the true queen of darkness bows before her king.” “Who is the ‘she’ it refers to?” I asked as a lump formed in my throat. “The only woman I’d willingly burn a city down for in order to protect her from the darkness that reaches for her. She’s the other half of my soul, but doesn’t realize it because the gods made her forget who she truly was. She and I will remain pawns in their game until she remem- bers who the fuck she was and returns to save us all.”

This book starts with what can only be described as chaos (literally)
I knew this book was going to be dark…I was warned after all, but I wasn’t ready for it. It’s definitely not for those who’ve just started reading dark romance and definitely not for those who’ve never experienced a book by Amelia Hutchins.

Took me a few minutes to get the feel of it all at the beginning… it felt like everything, everywhere happened all at once and yet I need more?

Now, in all honest I really wanted to love the book. Yes it’s dark, intense, sexy AF… there are aggressive asshole men all around, badass women all around too….everything I wanted yet somehow through it all, I felt like I just couldn’t get into it. It was all just ok.
I wanted it to be longer, I wanted more information (I get it, book 2, right?)…as I said, it was ok.

This book isn’t for the faint of heart I just want to preface this DO NOT IGNORE THE TRIGGER WARNINGS NO MATTER WHAT, especially if you are new to her writing and even if you have read the darkest romance. Amelia is a different type of writer, but I truly love her writing style. She usually writes a 2-3 page disclaimer TW/CW page. If you are new please read the sample first to test the waters.

So read it and evaluate it before you invest your time in reading this book. IT IS CALLED THE RED FLAGS SERIES FOR A REASON.

If you have read Amelia Hutchins before you will know that you will go through lengths of frustrations, rage, and ugh you have no idea I wanted to throw things at the wall, but it’s more intense and more of an experience to read her books especially the devil of London.

Chapter one definitely took it from 0 to hundred, but you have to be patient when reading this book. It definitely got me hooked by the first chapter.

Cause yes he is an alpha hole through and through, but there is a reason for ALL OF THIS. I mean I don’t condone his actions, but starcrossed lovers and all man all I want to do is scream and shout and just cry on the floor.

Khaos is the Devil. Tempting, delicious, and toxic, and fuckable, but Khaos may be a dick I want to throat punch so freaking bad, but if you knew the story and his thoughts. It hurts like a bitch. My heart. And omg Merikh my heart bleeds for him. I just want sigh. I just can’t say anymore, but Merikh. I LOVE HIM.

The world that Amelia built around this book is dark, gothic, and very alluring. Aderyn. I need to see more of her. I know she is powerful and I need to know MORE. Cause I loved Aria in Legacy of the Nine Realms. The end just wrecked my very soul and I need more!

😈 Touch her and you’ll die vibes like literally
😈 MMC is psychotic-ish and obsessive and possessive AF
😈 Starcrossed/Cursed lovers
😈 Gods, demons, witches and more
😈 Organized crime with otherworldy creatures
😈 Dark fantasy

If you are confused by this review if I loved the book. Yes, I did. I just had a LOT of emotions. Clearly. Cause I am soooo huhuh. Wrecked. LOL.

Original:

Dude i feel so empty and destroyed

I need time to recover to make this review

Will i even recover from this?

Amelia wrecked me. 🥹

Screaming, rage, crying. Ugh. My soul. Gone.

I'm starting this review and I truly have no idea what my rating should be. Clearly, this book is not written for a reader like me. I've read Amelia Hutchins in the past and love her Nine Realms series - I feel like I'm always saying that as I rate her other books 2 stars - but it's truly interesting to me that I haven't found any other books of her that I enjoy while the Nine Realms may be one of my favorite series?? And yes, I read the very thorough warning at the beginning of this book, but I still wish this would have been toned down a couple of notches because it could have been SO good.

The premise itself is why I wanted to read this, even after reading the warning at the beginning. That warning is there for a reason! This entire book is one red flag after another, to the point where it's entirely over the top and I don't understand why it had to go SO far. It's incredibly dark and honestly f*cked up. At some points I genuinely could not believe what I was reading, but at the same time I couldn't put this down because I was so intrigued.

I've had this complaint reading Bulletproof Damsel, but right off the bat if felt like I started this book at 50% of the way through, but I was only on page one. I felt like I missed a previous book or something, because at times I didn't have the background to know what was happening. Considering how dark and intense this is from the very beginning, I would have liked some connection to the characters. I never fully got a grasp on who they are, especially Khaos.

The plot is a bit muddy but essentially we have Khaos Nasir and Aderyn. They are soulmates who were cursed by the gods. Aderyn is cursed to be reborn over and over again, never remembering who she was or who Khaos is. To top that off, every time she's reborn it's into an incredibly horrible family/situation (think r*pe, molestation, etc...). Khaos is an incubus, but if he ever f*cks Aderyn, she will be dead forever (aka, not reborn... I think). He can never have the one he truly wants, but he has to have sex bc he's an incubus and will go mad without it. Then Aderyn hates him for that reason alone, because he will never be with her but can never explain why. Then, one of Khaos' men (who Aderyn was actually with in the past then left when she met Khaos (her soulmate)) is cursed to only be able to have sex with Aderyn. So yeah, super messy and it's never explained why that curse is in place. Basically, Aderyn did something really bad and the gods cursed her and everyone in their circle as punishment. Oh - and there's something that if Aderyn and Khaos ever do get close enough/fall in love - they are cursed to hate one another. It's all very confusing, and not clearly explained.

At the time this story takes place, Aderyn is 300 years into her most recent life and has her love/hate relationship with Khaos. Then 99% of the book is just grotesque situations, people dying, people hunting her, flashbacks to horrible torture Aderyn has endured, etc. Honestly, I'm not sure what even happened with the plot, I was too distracted by all the gore, sex, and unhinged things happening. Somewhere in the midst of all of this I did comprehend that Aderyn is trying to take down Khaos' like immortal mafia (?). He's building this said mafia/syndicate for reasons unknown (something to do with breaking the curse, but I have no idea how). No spoilers, but then we have the ending and it feels like the next book with just be restarting at the beginning..?

Also, I hate this whole "sharing" thing. And Khaos has to/does share Aderyn with other men... quite a lot. And those situations happen in front of others, including the guy who is in love with Aderyn and needs to have sex with her to not go crazy. Honestly, for that reason alone I kind of hate the book and ~maybe~ could have dealt with the rest a bit better.

Truly, if the plot was more flushed out and less repetitive and the unhinged torture and things were dialed back even like 20% + toss out the sharing stuff (which was odd just for the fact that Khaos seemed to possessive of Aderyn) - I would have probably enjoyed this. Yes, that's a long list of corrections but I really wanted this to work!

Argh - overall I guess I'll just say I can't recommend unless you're looking for and enjoy this type of thing. It's clearly not for me. But at the same time I want to read the next book just to see what happens??

The low rating is not because the subject matter bothered me. I think the fact that I was suddenly thrown into an extreme situation right off the bat without having first felt a connection with any of the characters prevented me from enjoying the entire story. I never made that connection I needed to care very much. We got to know and feel for Aria before Knox started being an alpha hole to her so I cared way more about that story, (and am anxiously awaiting the rest of that series!!!).

This is my favorite author and by favorite I mean I stalked her IG for months waiting for release dates for new books; however, this one missed the mark for me. . .

The first chapter felt clunky and was under developed information dump. I like the characters and direction this story is going, but I could have used 20 more chapters to round out some of the plot.

Hot DAMN, Amelia, what have you done to me 🤯

I expect nothing less than top-tier alphahole from QUEEN Amelia, and Khaos is no different. He is dominating, arrogant, completely psychotic, and yes, I'm in love with him.

Aderyn has such complexity to her because of what's happened, so she has moments of weakness and vulnerability but is so strong and badass at the same time.

Amelia does NOT pull punches with this book. It starts off with a bang and just....never slows down. It's such a wild ride that I LOVED being on. There is so much we don't know, but things are hinted at that makes me immediately want the next book. Khaos and Aderyn are the epitome of star-crossed lovers, and their push and pull to each other kept me on edge all night. Per usual, Amelia's side characters are EVERYTHING. I didn't just feel heartbreak for the MCs, but also poor sweet baby Merikh 😭😭

This book is dark, but Khaos speaking French to her, knowing she can't understand it, legit broke my heart.

That's it?

Just used to more full bodied work from the author. I get the story building but felt like there should be a bit more at this point. 240 pages is really short for this author. I felt like we deserved more.

First things first, like the rest of Amelia’s works this book has lots of potentially triggering stuff so please make sure to read the content warning at the beginning! Cause I mean, it is called the Red Flag series for a reason!

Moving on, as a general rule I tend to avoid monster romances because it’s just not my thing but apparently Amelia is one of the few authors who can toe the line and I'll end up loving it! 🤣 I wouldn't call this a full-on monster romance but we had some fun bonus features that came with Khaos’ true form that I wasn’t mad about in the slightest! If I'm being honest, that sneak peak wasn't nearly enough and I'm already craving more of it!

I also went in expecting to absolutely detest Khoas, and believe me I did for the entirety of chapter one but chapter two changed EVERYTHING! I couldn’t find it in me to hate him because once I knew what his motivations were for doing the things he did I found them somewhat endearing? I’m not sure what that says about me tbh and idc because I am obsessed with him! He will do literally anything to protect the woman he loves even if it means doing all of the despicable things to ensure that she hates him. That man is ready and willing to take on the Gods themselves and I cannot wait to watch Khaos raise all of the chaos on the path to their happy ending! Oh, and all of the moments he spoke French to her?! I WAS SWOONING! 🥹🫶🏻

I was also intrigued with Aderyn as a character. While at first she appeared demure and somewhat weak, that girl has a temper to match Khaos! As the book continued on, her true colors were revealed and I was SO HERE FOR IT! Homegirl is ready to come for Khaos's kingdom and I cannot wait to see how her scheming plays out in the next book because it can only end badly. Like SO badly I’m actually a little scared for her. 😅

Something else I found a bit fun was the setting of this story! I’m used to Amelia’s stories taking place in a more isolated location like a forest or having a high fantasy setting while this one takes place in our own world beginning in the 1700s and continues on through the centuries! I really like this aspect because it gives their relationship that timeless feeling, a love that transcends time if you will! 🤌🏻✨ I cannot wait to see how the story for these two continues because I’m more than ready for their toxic and presumably explosive sequel! If you love Amelia and the brutality of her stories then you need to add this to your TBR ASAP!

Plot: Woman with supernatural background, but no memory of it, is forced to watch as the man she loves constantly shatters her heart. She becomes hardened by this and plots to take him down.
Tropes: Mates, Who did this to you? No one but me will have you, I own you etc...
FMC: Tough as fuck, but vulnerable
MMC: Khaos is the ultimate bastard
Angst: 5/5
Dark 4/5
Spice 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

TWs: MMC fucks other women. MMC is cruel and hateful toward the FMC 90% of the time. MMC keeps FMC captive.

If you are a fan of Amelia Hutchins, you will know that we have all known about this book for a while, we have all been warned, multiple times, about how fucked up and dark this book is. As Ameila said, it is not a romance. There are no fluffy scenes in this.

This book broke me. I haven't cried so hard since Crown of Chaos. Amelia never writes an easy story. We have to endure the worst lows to build toward incredible highs, that is totally worth it in the end.

What I loved:
✅ Aderyn
✅ Khaos
✅ Merikh

What I didn't like:
❌ Khaos (but also loved him)

Aderyn is my kind of girl. She is a strong, brave, no fucks given kind of woman. I found her inner monologues witty.

Kkaos is aptly named. He is rough, cruel, demanding, possessive, spiteful, but also soft for Aderyn. We got a glimpse of this in a few scenes with Aderyn. They made my heart melt but I also felt hatred towards him for constantly breaking her damn heart with all the other women and his cruel behaviour toward her.

The ending sucked but in the best way. The scenes of Khaos speaking freely toward her because he knows she won't remember broke me.

I won't go into more detail but if this is your first book by Amelia Hutchins, I would strongly advise you to go read some of her other series before diving in here, because this one is not for the faint of heart!.

Verdict:
If you are looking for a book to gut you, this is for you.

I am eagerly anticipating the next book!

When it's her fault they are all cursed.

When having one person he wants would kill her.

He does break her heart so fucking much. Whilst loving her and being so OTT about her.

But I guess she broke it first? She is not the victim here.

Ergh, still wonder if he just had to be as *heartbreaking* at times, but, still I ate this up.🤷‍♀️

It's definitely border line horror/paranormal erotica.

Made me feel a lot of things for sure and the cliffy..not unexpected but can I have book 2 now?👀

Note: technically not safe but also.. it makes sense for it not to be, it's part of the plot.. but he still is OTT of her. Also the author has a whole paragraph of content warnings, some of which include gore, humiliation, degradation (not too heavy), sadism (again not too bad imo) and r@pe (not by H)!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Amazing

This was the first book I have read by Amelia Hutchins and it did not disappoint! First, who doesn't love some red flags?? That's why I knew I needed to read this book! Second, she gives you plenty of warning that this book may not be for you and why. Aderyn made a deal with the devil. She thinks he is just out to make her life hell. Little does she know, they have a deeper history than she can remember. Khaos loves to torment and slightly torture her at times. But isn't that what you do when your wife (who doesn't remember is your wife) screwed her life, yours, and your best friends? She thinks the worst of you but wants you so badly, but doesn't know the lengths you are trying to go to make everything right. I can't wait for book 2!!

Let's sit down for this one, shall we?

I loved the opening scene and thought to myself, "Wow, this might actually be good from start-to-finish." And then it got crazy. Like CRAZY. And before the first chapter even ended, I felt like I needed a shot, or twenty. I was promised DARK romance, with a heavy captilization on dark. And I got it. This is wild, truly. Beats all predecesors. It was slightly ridiculous at times, but dark nevertheless.

The MMC, Khaos Nasir (yes, that is actually his name), also known as The Devil (of course), urges me to start a petition to give love interest's normal names again, because I can't do this anymore. He was, naturally, darkness incarnate, nightmares, trembling ankles, and whatnot.

The dialogue and interaction were very childishly dark, considering the fact that this is NA and we are—or at least, so I hope—capable of having normal conversations. Also, I get the idea of weaving information through dialogue in an attempt to not blatantly info dump, but it failed—it was info, and it was dumped. The writing often got repetitive, and the entire thing was very melodramatic.

It took me 15 minutes, and a newfound ability for critical reading, to come to the realisation that this is fantasy, albeit low fantasy. And then someone suddenly mentioned facetime? And I have to put the book away for a second because I can not believe my own eyes. And then I dared to look upon the pages once more, and I saw this: "I had never forgiven him after ending up locked away in a sanitarium for hysteria. The institution I was in specialized in pleasure from pain, and it was run by demons and other beings who fed off pleasure."

And there I rest my case. I couldn't really get into it, and despite the prescense of certainly good elements, it didn't come together for me.

Conclusion: This is basically if Fallen and Twilight got dumped into the seven realms of hell and fished out by a dark romance girly with a lot of demons still clinging onto the pages

This book needed another round of editing. There were misused words, weird sentences, repetitive dialogue all over the place.

We are repeatedly told what has happened in the past, but nothing happens in the current timeline. There is no plot. This is a crew of cursed demons and it’s Aderyn’s fault but she doesn’t remember. I get it. How could I not, when the author tells me 50 times, using the exact same language and with no additional details added? I know Aderyn is mad about being buried alive and abandoned, because she says it repeatedly, and treats us to a nightmare scene.

I know what both Aderyn and Khaos are working toward, but absolutely nothing happens to further either goal in any significant way.

Not a good book. At all. I would have DNF’d, but I actually paid for it because of the recommendations for it, so I felt compelled to finish it.

When Aderyn walked into a brothel three-hundred years ago and put it on fire after a harsch rejection, she couldn't have known she would be punished by the Devil of London himself, Khaos Nasir. She is practically his slave and every time she disrespects or leaves him she is punished. But she doesn't know Khaos is her true mate and were cursed by the gods centuries ago so they have a very difficult time being together. Even though Aderyn doesn't remember this, Khaos knows and he is searching for a way to undo the curse.

Pro's:
+ I can feel the concept of this book and I think there might be quite the interesting story beneath al the sex and violence. Unfortunately, the storytelling is not good enough to actually tell us that concept and I felt like it never came to fruition.
+ For all the violence and sexual abuse this book has, I can commend it for the full 4! pages of trigger warnings. You won't go blind into this and at least you know what you can expect in this book.

Con's:
- There is no consistency to this story, there are multiple examples where the details don't match up to previous events and the flow of the story in general is just not okay. It felt chaotic and it was not fun to read at all.
- I felt like there is no character development and even though I read the whole book I still have little idea what these people are all about, but even after finishing I have to clue. Loads of dramatic shit happens, but in the end I just didn't care at all.

Do you think we can double check if we didn't accidentally got some very early copy of this book? There were so many inconsistencies and the writing as not that great at all. This was recommended though one of my facebook groups, but this was not it. I might not be the type for these dark, sexually violent romances, but the sex scenes were actually the best written parts of the whole book. The concept could have been interesting, but the drama and the storytelling just didn't do it for me. This will go on the Yeet-pile and I will not read anything from this series after this.

The Devil of London, who, side note, doesn’t reside in London for the majority of the book, is one of my least favorite reads of 2024, but for some reason when Hutchins finally comes out with the sequel I will likely feel compelled to read it. I have a frustrating need to tie up the loose ends Hutchins has left flapping in the wind.
My issues with the book:
—The character profiles and world building are sloppy.
—There are info dumps on almost every page.
—The characters are broken records.
Yes, we get it. Aderyn is mad she was buried alive, Khaos can’t be with her how he wants, and Merikh loves her. The characters mention these plot points and more every chance they get.
—The book is also novella length. Maybe with more length, a different writing style, and better editing, it could’ve been a half decent book.

One last irk: he’s not even the devil…I won’t spoil what he is. You find out eventually when it’s randomly mentioned almost as a side note. But it bothered me that The Devil of London is neither a devil nor in London. Evil, yes, but that’s where it ends.

Decidedly Disastrous

I wanted to love it, the blurb gave me a premise I have been craving. Adult, not YA not New Adult but actual. Adult PNR.

She is 300 and supposed to be a baddy out for revenge. I mean this is her blurb "... soon, he'll understand why queens are a power piece on the chessboard. I'm about to remind him just how much damage an angry, vindictive women can do...."

Make your toes curl, lets go Aderyn!

What we got.... A chaotic mess that was all over the place with no development on anything. The plot went nowhere, the characters had zero development. We didn't even get any real world building.

It felt as if this was a first draft. There were a lot of inconsistencies, and the writing was not good. It did not feel fully fleshed out, more like thoughts and concepts put on paper then turned in.

Concept was spot on execution was negligible.

Its just not good. The plot was interesting yet it felt like the author had done it before in her chaos series. I felt like i was reading book 3/4 with all of the time jumps. The fmc is supposed to be some badass witch who can harness light and dark magic but we dont get to see that in this book. Why do we have to constantly be reminded of her assault? The assaults are brutal and add nothing to the book. The violence is just there but adds nothing. This was bad

Not a very original plot. Sounds so similar to Erie and Callaghan’s story from Oh Holy Knight and If She’s Wicked. He protects her through time and she has to remember who she is. 🙄 This is so hard for me because I love Amelia’s Fae and Playing with Monsters series’. This just falls flat for me.

good plot, but…

The plot was there. It’s a really cool, original idea. I liked it so much I stuck around for the end. But I wasn’t a big fan of the writing style.

This was my first AH book and I actually don’t know what to say?! This was everything but also not? Also it felt very wattpad-y. I don’t even know how to explain it. I’m a sucker for books that make me feel something and this for sure did. (all negative feelings ofc this is not a safe book y’all…there’s so much cheating that I’ve become immune at this point dw though he’s fucking all these women to save the h! If that isn’t true love!!)

This book was a whole ass rollercoaster ride through hell. Don’t even understand what this was about? The whole plot was so confusing and beyond chaotic. Also the dialogue was cringy and repetitive at times. Certain words like 'slut' 'love' and 'pussy’ were repeated at least 200 times.

I’m not even sure if I enjoyed this or whether I’m just toxic enough to like getting my heart broken cause the relationship between the protagonists was on a whole nother level of fucked up jfc. The push and pull between them was so damn exhausting. I’m still rooting for the characters to be endgame though. Maybe become a throuple. Idek. I just need them to be together in the next book without all the drama. I think my girl has suffered enough.

I can confidently say that I need an official break from dark books. Cause that ending scene really was something else. I’m actually traumatized and beyond disturbed! I think it was supposed to be hot?? My 😺 actually shriveled up during that scene. Like I get that he’s supposed to be Lucifer or sth but that is so fucked up lol. And for her to enjoy that? Electric chair for both of them.

A sweet little romance would be really nice rn to get rid of all the toxins that this book has produced within my body.

God this was sooooo good!!!
I haven’t had a 5 star read in a while and I loved this book so much, it easily gets it from me.

Star crossed lovers, fated mates doomed to be separated by the gods they angered.

Aderyn Caine is forced to live a life in the service of Khaos Nasir. He owns her. But he won’t claim her like she desperately deeply wants.
They have danced around each other, playing games that neither really win. But Aderyn always loses.

⭐️ Plot: 5/5
