This book was suggested by my up line as I learn to navigate the area of network marketing. I found it to be an easy read. The authors did a fabulous job in tracing the history of network marketing, dispelling myths, preparing newcomers for rejections that are sure to come as well as the importance of positioning and timing.
There was a quote that I will hold dear. The quote was: “fine wine can be a byproduct of sour grapes.” The authors were encouraging network marketers to let the rejections propel you. The best way to allow for this propelling is not to take the rejections personally. Marketers have to remember the no is attached to the product not them.....no may mean not right now! Also, marketers must know it’s a numbers thing. When you have a multitude of prospects the rejections don’t hit in the same manner as when having a small number.
MLM’s have gotten a bad wrap. Words like pyramid schemes are always thrown around. Network marketers don’t have to argue the point just be prepared for it. People make referrals all the time...other occupations pay in much the same way but don’t get the same wrap.
Traditional business structure allows only for linear income; network marketing allows for residual income. I can understand why such a premise would be attractive. Those in network marketing believe that “many hands make the load light.” Marketers may be in business for themselves but they are not by themselves! Each individual, be it up line or down line, has a role.
I can see the difference in MLM’s and the traditional business structure much clearer. I also have a better understanding of its history, language/jargon, rank structure, the importance of persistence as well as enthusiasm. Lastly, I totally grasp the concept of reinforcing self sufficiency as opposed to dependency.
Nothing beats a failure but a try! I will give this everything that I’ve got. As the authors state “there are seeds of greatness in everyone.” I will approach this as I have always done with other things: with an open mind, a can do attitude, accept the coaching and embrace the journey.
The first part of the book was very helpful, in terms of managing your own personal expectations going in the network marketing field. This is important to keep going as you will be faced with challenges and Mark lets you know what will happen before it happens. To keep you going beyond a year!
I didn't find the second half as relevant to someone in their first year and disagreed with some of the points put forward (one of them was that you are pretty much telling your downline that it is your way or the highway and not letting your downline try another method, with technology these days there are many methods of prospecting that bring success, some people's strengths lie in different methods....
it may have been relevant at the time and perhaps some of the content was slightly outdated with regards to technology etc., but there are nuggets here and there you can take away/adapt for 2020 and beyond.
I joined network marketing company to learn skills in selling and marketing. I also love presenting and speaking. I found this book very valuable. This book mentions many valuable points and emphasis alot on not quitting but gritting your way through by learning from the successful ones.
This book is a must read for the new network marketer or even the seasoned one. Reading this book could make the difference of you sticking with it or losing a fortune in what you could have had, namely a nice residual income for life.
A perfect rundown of exactly all the ups and downs you will face in the business. Every person should read this the minute they sign up. It will save so much headache and heartache.
Your First Year in Network Marketing by Rene Reid Yarnell and Mark Yarnell
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because, while the principles it outlines are undeniably valuable, I feel they could have been presented in a more straightforward manner. That said, this is still a must-read for anyone in the network marketing industry.
The book highlights key lessons such as the dual appeal of network marketing, offering financial freedom and time flexibility. It stresses the importance of building relationships through word-of-mouth communication and teaches practical strategies like following up with prospects after some time to revisit their circumstances. I found the focus on duplication particularly insightful, emphasizing that success comes from creating systems that your team can easily replicate. Additionally, the authors effectively shift the perception of MLM from sales to teaching, emphasizing education and mentoring over transactions.
Overall, Your First Year in Network Marketing provides a realistic, practical roadmap for navigating this profession. For anyone currently in or considering MLM, this book offers a wealth of wisdom to set you on the path to success.
Listened to the audiobook. It was well read! Book was awful though - very outdated as the internet was new and things were done very differently when this was written. It also focuses ENTIRELY on building your network and not at all on selling products (mentions that you need to sell a little bit but don’t focus on products too much). Uhhhh pyramid scheme anyone?! I was really disappointed in this book. The advice may have been useful 20 years ago, but with the advent of social media things are very different and I don’t think anyone is going to want to “come to your home to hear about an incredible business opportunity, and then see the presentation and duplicate it themselves” which is 90% of what the book says. Made me feel worse about MLMs when I was really hoping to feel inspired and excited.
Even though I've got no interest in Network Marketing per se, this book was recommended in a general business group I am and in my opinion has quite a lot of useful, transferable ideas for business and other purposes. Quite an easy read despite being nearly 200 pages long. A number of typos to look out for - what should be a $ sign being typed as a 5 (so $1000 becomes 50000 - a bit of a difference!) - that occurs quite often, and there are some others.
What an amazing book. It talks about the challenges and incredible opportunity of network marketing. By the way, we are one of the people who are forever thankful that we joined a network marketing company, because it has lead to so much financial freedom for us. But more than that, we have see so many stories of emotion, physical and financial healing of others and we have made so many good friends it the industry!
Solid but somewhat dated information from a true legend of the industry. A must-read for anyone in Network Marketing. Just be mindful that some concepts may be out of date. Adjust as needed; the principles espoused remain the same.
Beautifully described experience with ups and downs, supportive recommendations on how to start, develop and succeed. Highly recommend for those who wants to develop in MLM
A great book, full of essential information about direct selling. When I read it, I remembered my first year in network marketing. I hope to see a second part in the future dedicated to leaders in direct selling.
