When they succeed, we feel like we've won too, and when they face hardships, it touches our hearts, creating a strong bond that lasts beyond the book's ending. If you enjoy fiction, you will love every page of this lengthy book and may even feel like it never ends.

Roarke cleverly employs Hal's own learning journey as a narrative device, thereby allowing readers to grasp the complexities of the Wielding abilities simultaneously with the protagonist.

An element of intrigue lies in the mystery surrounding the Primordials. The anticipation of uncovering more about these enigmatic beings in the future installments, along with the resolution of Hal’s sister’s fate and the outcome of Varim’s machinations, will undoubtedly keep readers hooked.

Roarke’s skillful storytelling breathes life into this brand-new universe and its compelling characters. As such, Wielders of Woe: Inferno is an immersive read that skillfully melds science fiction and fantasy elements into an unforgettable tale of courage, transformation, and resilience.

One of the book's notable strengths lies in its compelling archetypal protagonist, another case of the hero's journey, again in exile, but with a very singular motivation. “Wielders of War” by Jeffery A. Roarke is one exciting science fiction tale that is full of interesting events and adventures. War brews as two empires clash for supremacy. The death of Athos as planned by Torsai welcomes animosity that sets the Polarian Kingdom and Athos empire at war with one another. Prince Halcion emerges victorious and is supposedly the next in line at the helm of Athos empire. However, the absence of Emperor Tiberius who is away receiving treatment makes the council led by Varim fail to recognize the empire’s new prince. Instead, they order Prince Halcion to undertake another assessment as a measure for his readiness to lead. What follows is a tough assignment, one that the Athos Empire must unite to win even as they wage war against outside attacks. Will Varim’s plot succeed or will Prince Halcion be crowned as the rightful heir of the Athos empire? Dive in and be entertained as you find out what the journey entails.
Jeffery Roarke does justice to the genre especially supernatural approach, epic battles, and political rivalry that invite readers to dive deeper for a better analysis of the conflicts. Expect more action, adventure, and suspense as you engage with the plot. The author makes it look easy at one moment you think you have a grasp of the story, only for the events to surprise you. Fight for power attracts all sorts of vices that come with it including, greed, vengeance, corruption, betrayal that the author captures well and digs deeper for a well-crafted story. You will love Halcion’s spirit and his determination to push through. He is a character I fell in love with, amidst all the miseries he undergoes, he does not relent and showcases not just bravery but also ambition to be crowned the Prince despite the resentment from his adversaries.

Firstborn of Emperor Tiberius, Halcion Skyborn is about to go back home after winning a war to prove himself and show everyone he is the right heir to the throne.
However, not everyone agrees with this, and upon returning back he will realize many things have changed. Not only his father is ill, but the powers have been transferred to someone who has their own agenda and is ready to change even the Code to get what they want.
When his existence becomes a threat for this person, Halcion is exiled to the Ashlands, a place from where nobody has ever returned. There he will follow a lead left by his mother, passed away some time before the events in the book take place, discovering things about his powers and his past that will change his life forever. With the help of an old friend and a few new ones, he will have to once again prove himself and save not only the Ashlands but the rest of the empire as well.

I don't read a lot of sci-fi, and I have to say that this way very easy for me to follow. The storyline is quite interesting, and if you are a fan of secret identities, you will probably enjoy this. I liked Halcion's growth throughout the book, and how he was a little too proud at first but at the end he is more mature and probably more worthy of the throne.
This book is also full of action. There are so many fights, and there is never a dull moment. As a reader who enjoyed more character-driven books, this was probably the only thing that prevented me from fully enjoying the book. It was difficult for me to care about the characters, and I wish there had been more moments where they actually bonded and we could see their relationships more.
Still, I would definitely recommend this book if you are more plo-driven and like action over other things.

Disclaimer: I read this as a judge for SPSFC#3, as part of the Wayward Stars team. However, the following is my own personal review and does not reflect on the teams score.

Wielders of Woe: Inferno is one of those lovely mixtures of Sci-fi and Fantasy. What we have here is very much a fantasy story (political intrigue within a royal family, banishment to the Ashlands) in a very Sci-fi setting, making the most of space opera. Reading the blurb, I thought I was going to love this book but, in the end, I didn't finish it.

Before the gloom and doom, there are some positives here. The action is well written and is begins with a bang. For those that like political intrigue, we are thrown straight into it and the sparks start flying. It is fast paced, with the plot fairly zipping along. There will be readers that absolutely love this (and the reviews on Amazon back this up) and I kind of wished that I had liked it more.

But, and there is a but, I thought it felt a bit too contrived. We seemed to go from set piece to set piece with little thought to the worldbuilding. I didn't really get a feel for Ashlands, which could have been done to great effect, and that spoilt my enjoyment somewhat. I didn't really care for the characters and felt that they were a bit flat. I am not against plot driven books but I do like some depth to the characters. I didn't feel that I got that in the half that I read. Some dubious decision making also had me shouting at one of the characters and not in a good way. Some fairly flat prose then sealed its fate.

This looks like it will be the first book in a series and it does have that feeling. Unfortunately, I just didn't feel invested enough to finish and will probably not carry on with the series when available.

Action-packed adventure!

"Wielders of Woe: Inferno" by Jeffery Roarke Jr. is a blend of science-fiction, fantasy, and action. The story opens with Prince Halcion, heir to the throne, who returns home from war, victorious. As he strives to prove that he is a worthy heir to the throne, there is an assassination, and he finds himself on the run and stripped of his powers.

What follows is a story of courage and adventure, betrayals and allies. Roarke offers just the right balance between supernatural elements, political intrigue, and epic battles. The author skillfully draws you in, giving you the impression that you think you know what's happening next, only to be surprised by a plot twist.

As far as heroes go, you can't help but like Halcion. Despite the various challenges he goes through, he doesn't stop fighting. This was a solid book with an interesting plot. However, I would have loved for the characters to have a bit more depth to them.

Wielders of Woe: Inferno is certainly an ambitious, fast-paced Sci Fi work, which perhaps pays homage to a few other great works. Roarke's clear focus on world building and plot comes through in stunning detail and valuable descriptions. The story is in constant motion, breathlessly moving from scene to scene and covering thousands of years of history in the span of a single book. However, the characters fell a bit flatter for me. I didn't find myself feeling for Hal, and the other characters didn't seem fully fleshed out. I saw them feeling things and having emotional connections, but I didn't feel what they felt. As much as I wanted to, it was hard to root for characters I didn't feel like I knew. A few moments veered into great character building, but in general, I didn't see a focus on this, which made it hard to root for them. Overall, the world building is well done, and the plot moves at a good pace, but I wanted to know the characters a bit more than I felt I did.

"Wielders of Woe: Inferno" by Jeffery Roarke Jr. was part of my self-imposed science fiction marathon during the last september. This one takes you on a cosmic journey with a prince, a sprawling empire, and enough political drama to make a soap opera blush.

Our tale kicks off with a Prince, Hal for the pals, on a goodwill tour to handle a rebellious family causing a stir in the Empire. Now, I won't spill the cosmic beans on the specifics – that's your job. But trust me, it's a big deal, the kind that echoes across galaxies.

After some diplomatic hustle, Hall comes back with more than just a souvenir keychain – he's got higher fame and everyone singing his praises. He's thinking, "Yep, I just secured my throne ticket."

But hold up, back on the capital planet, political shenanigans are afoot. There's a schemer in town, playing chess with the empire's succession, and Hall is smack in the middle. Now he's got to juggle securing his heir status, deciphering political mysteries, and figuring out what his rivals are scheming. Intergalactic politics – not exactly a walk in the space park.

Jeffery Roarke Jr. serves up a narrative with hints of Timothy Zahn, crafting an atmosphere through dialogue and character feels. It's like cooking a gourmet meal with minimal ingredients – you'll need some imagination lifting, but it's worth it.

Now, fair warning, this feels like a first book – the potential is there, but it's like a cake not fully baked. There are moments where things move faster than a hyperspace jump, and you might need to hit the brakes and reread a bit. It's not a deal-breaker; consider it a pit stop in your intergalactic road trip.

Prince Hall – the dude has aspirations, but initially, you're like, "Bro, what's going on in that head of yours?" There's character growth, and by the end, you're practically his space therapist.

Jeffery Roarke Jr. clearly has a plot map, and he sprinkles it with neat twists. It's an enjoyable read, but like an interstellar Tinder date, you know there's potential for something even better in the future. I'm stoked for the sequel – bring it on, Jeffery! If you're into space operas with a dash of fantasy, political intrigue, and a plot that does the space tango, give "Wielders of Woe: Inferno" a spin. Beam me up, Hal!

Intriguing!

"Wielders of Woe: Inferno" by Jeffery Roarke Jr. is a rollercoaster ride through a world of intrigue, betrayal, and fire-wielding magic that will have you hooked from the first page. I mean, who doesn't love a good tale of royal intrigue, hidden plots, and cosmic conflicts, right?
What I absolutely adored about this book is its ability to keep you on your toes. Just when you think you've got a handle on things, Roarke throws in a curveball that leaves you flipping through pages faster than a caffeinated squirrel. The pacing is like a well-choreographed dance – it ebbs and flows, building tension and releasing it with perfectly timed twists.
And the world-building? Oh, let me tell you, it's as rich and vivid as a double chocolate fudge cake. From the Empire of Athos with its shady council to the enigmatic Ashlands that send shivers down your spine, every detail is meticulously crafted. You'll find yourself completely immersed in a universe that's equal parts fantastical and relatable, and that's a rare gem in the world of fantasy literature.

"Wielders of Woe: Inferno" by Jeffery Roarke Jr. follows Prince Halcion, son of Emperor Tiberius and the rightful heir of the Crown Prince. He has won a war but his pride is quickly shot down by individuals who see him as undeserving of the glory and throne of the Athos empire. His father is ill and shockingly, Varim and the emperor’s council place before Halcion a test to prove himself once again as worthy of prestige status. However, little do they know that their collusions will only enrich Halcion's transformation into a hero, who will rescue his people from alarming dark entities.

Jeffery Roarke Jr.'s apt narration effortlessly hauls readers to emotionally charged times as celestial entities clash. The rich tapestry of secondary characters blends to add chasm and intrigue to the tale, as deep themes of avarice, vengeance, and falsehood come alive. This is not your usual science fiction but an enigmatic volume whose hold on your emotions will hold till the end. Highly recommended!

A very exhilarating and fun novel to read. There was close to no dull moment in the book. I love fantasy books and whenever I come across a good one it becomes one of my top recommendations until a better one comes along. For now that spot is with this book.

The book's remarkable attribute resides in its captivating archetypal main character, epitomizing the classic hero's journey, once more set in exile but fueled by an exceptionally unique determination. The author also skillfully creates a diverse supporting cast, igniting readers' imagination and immersing them further into the narrative. Among the ensemble are valiant warriors, enigmatic whisperers, and a formidable wielder of fire, adding depth and intrigue to the story.

The book is beautifully written and I will recommend it to everyone who loves fantasy(like me). This book will not disappoint. Lastly, much gratitude to the author for writing such a beautiful book for us the readers.

Thank you
Happy Reading

Wielders of Woe: Inferno is a remarkable fantasy novel filled with action, magic, and suspense. Author Jeffrey Roarke Jr. flaunts his brilliants storytelling ability through the depiction of complex characters such as Prince Halcion, the stories main protagonist. I found myself fully immersed in the world that Roarke creates, and my intrigue only grew with each passing page. Blending fantasy and sci-fi is difficult to do, but Roarke does so seamlessly. Although the novel clocks in at over 400 pages, the story was so captivating that I failed to realize its length until after I finished. Obviously, this is a testament to Roarke's phenomenal ability as a writer and novelist.
