What a great start to a series! Magical family secrets, lurking evil, fate. Low-fantasy book with some suspense. Low spice (a few heated moments).
The series will follow the 4 Dunton sisters. This is Temperance’s book. Family secrets come to light after they’re grandmother passes away. Their grandmother gave them each a gift with a note and specific instructions on when to open them. Temperance (Tempy) is the only one living in the same town as their grandmother, and she’s the oldest, so it’s up to her to figure out what their grandmother was trying to tell them… and she needs to do it before it’s too late. The book ends in a mild cliffhanger and sets up the story to continue in the next book in the series, Aftershock.
There were some plot holes and inconsistencies that took me out of the story and had me rereading some parts of the book, though they made more sense when I continued reading. But goodness, that fourth wall! I love it when I’m reading a book and can see things that the main characters can’t, and then I get irrationally irritated at the main characters for not seeing it (even though I have more information than they do because of that fourth wall)! And this book has a ton of that!
Overall, it was a great read, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series! I have to know what happens next!

But.. I devoured this book! 4 sisters that each represent an element and being a science person Tempy really resonated with me. At first I was definitely not fond of Anders, which I love a known since small and might end together trope, he was just very ‘pay attention and give me a chance’ kind of guy. The story was very well written and I enjoyed the multiple POVs and getting to see the dynamics of the sisters!

This book is the story of Tempy. Tempy and her sisters have returned home due to their grandmothers death. The 4 sisters weee each given a letter and a gift from their grandmother. Strange things beginning to Tempy and her sisters. Along the way, Tempy and the sheriff (Anders) acknowledge their feeling for each other.
This book was amazing! It has a great plot and well developed characters. This book has a bit of romance, suspense and some magic. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Disclaimer: I was provided an ARC of this manuscript in exchange for my honest review.

I have a lot of thoughts.

I really wanted to like this novel. I’m a sucker for anything with elemental powers. It’s one of my favorite things to read, and I’m always looking for more material to fulfill that need. That being said, this was not my favorite novel to read. I think it had a lot of problems that need to be hammered out.

The Plot:

Tempest is a book about a family who bears four elemental daughters every four generations, each one in a different season, with a different elemental gift. Each of these daughters are then named after a particular trait that they are supposed to embody (and it’s always the same trait): Temperance (water/winter), Valour (fire/summer), Justice (air/autumn), and Prudence (earth/spring). These four daughters have to fight against an evil force only referred to as “the darkness” within this book (though SPOILER ALERT: ). In order to defeat this darkness, each sister has to find their other half (essentially, a romantic partner who can make them stronger).

This plot, without looking at the book itself, is incredibly interesting. It’s got action, it’s got romance; it’s got a convenient power system that can birth quizzes about “Which Element You Are.” It has a lot of potential; unfortunately, I just think there were some issues with the execution of the plot.

The Magic System/Worldbuilding:

The magic system can be divided into a few different parts:

1. The seasons
2. The elements
3. The gems
4. The other half

As I said previously, each of the girls is intended to represent a season. The first issue with this is that the seasons aren’t actually in order. What I mean by this: with each generation the girls are always supposed to be born in the same order (winter, autumn, summer, spring). But that’s not actually the order of the seasons. Let’s say that we were going with winter first, as the author does here, then the next oldest child should have been spring, then summer, and then autumn. The fact that the girls aren’t born in the order of the seasons kind of muddles things a little bit, and makes it unclear what the author is going for with the inclusion of the seasons.

There’s also the names: The girls are named after the trait their season is supposed to embody. The problem with this is that the names aren’t necessarily consistent with the traits they are supposed to embody. So, for example, the daughter born in Winter— who has water powers— is named Temperance. The main trait she is supposed to aspire to, however, is Wisdom. Wisdom and Temperance aren’t necessarily the same— there are times when it may be wiser to let go as opposed to constantly restraining oneself from a particular thing. Additionally, the daughter born in Spring— who has earth powers— is named Prudence, but her trait is Kindness. Prudence as a name would actually be more fitting for the daughter born in Winter though, and again, doesn’t really have anything to do with being kind.

Now, let’s talk about the seasons, elements, and gems as a whole. In addition to being associated with a particular element/season, the girls also have a gemstone, which essentially holds their power (winter is aquamarine, autumn is amethyst, spring is tiger’s eye, and summer was fire agate). Now, don’t get me wrong. These were all popular fantasy tropes that I absolutely loved when I was younger. But because they’re all grouped together like this— as opposed to the author just picking one— it makes it more obvious that the author is utilizing these specific tropes. And because she’s not necessarily doing anything new with them, the story itself comes off as a little cliché. I think it would have been more effective for the author to have picked one of these tropes and really go deeply into the lore: that would have both emphasized the nostalgia factor and brought new life to the trope.

The other thing with this part of the magic system is that it’s— for all intents and purposes— spoon-fed to you. The protagonists literally sit around in a circle and tell you exactly what season they are, their trait, their power, their gemstone, etc. I think it would have helped if each of the protagonists had found out information about themselves separately; that way it would have felt more realistic and we would have gotten to spend more time in Temperance’s head.

Lastly, there’s the fact that each woman has an “other half” who makes her magic stronger. I don’t necessarily have a huge issue with this. I thought it was interesting, and I liked the romance element it introduced. I wonder a little bit about the fact that they need someone else to draw out their full power (as opposed to being enough themselves)? But that’s me being a little nitpicky; I’m not sure how much it actually bothers me.

Romance:

While the idea of needing someone else to draw out their power, the specific romance we see in this book does bother me a little bit. 100%, I see what the author was trying to go for. Temperance’s other half is a sheriff—Anders— who she experiences extreme levels of attraction to, but refuses to actually give in to. Anders is clearly meant to be that grumpy, possessive, hot guy that has become really popular lately (the grumpy-sunshine trope, in particular, is something I’ve been seeing around a lot), but it doesn’t quite work. His “grumpiness” often crosses the line into outright rudeness and his “possessiveness” comes off more as an extremely unhealthy behavior. Anders gets angry at the female protagonist a lot, basically for not immediately wanting to jump into a relationship with him, when before the book has started, they haven’t really seen each other in *years.*

Not to mention, really early on in the novel, they end up in a full make-out session. As in the day after the protagonist finds out her grandma died. I would say that that’s a little too early to jump into the romance; personally I would have wanted it to be a little more drawn out. Temperance is going through a time of grief; she needs space or support, not a hot guy shoving his tongue down her throat.

The Evil:

Temperance’s new, mysterious boss is very clearly meant to be the “evil” thing she is supposed to defeat. As in, from the moment he’s introduced, you immediately get bad-guy vibes. That didn’t necessarily bother me: rather, what bothered me, was that he makes a pass at Temperance— and continues to do so throughout the novel— and she doesn’t seem to think that’s weird? He’s her boss— even if you don’t suspect that he’s the evil magical being you’re supposed to defeat, that IS sexual harassment. And yet she never reaches out to HR?

The Ice-Queen:

At work, everyone calls Temperance the “ice queen.” But honestly, we don’t really see any examples of her being icy. She’s not rude or anything— unless someone is rude to her first— she’s just very direct. That in and of itself isn’t icy or rude though; it’s a job. Asking people to do their jobs doesn’t make her an ice queen.

Temperance’s Assistant:

Temperance has an assistant at her job. He starts off as this lovable, overgrown puppy type. He trips over his feet and such, but he means well. But then halfway through the book, he suddenly becomes this evil henchman type, and you’re not totally sure how you got there. It’s almost like the person at the beginning of the book and the person he ends up becoming are actually two entirely different characters. I almost think that would have been better actually: if Temperance had two assistants, one evil and one good.

Switching POVs:

This author does something really interesting: in addition to having your normal POV switches between different chapters, she also has POV switches within each chapter. Think Lord of the Flies. The thing is, the reason why most authors avoid doing this is because it can get confusing for the reader to figure out who’s speaking at a particular time. Generally, if you’re going to switch POVs, it’s better to mark a section break or switch to a different chapter.

In regard to POV, I also wasn’t totally sure why we got Temperance’s assistant’s POV. For the most part, it didn’t really add anything to the story.

The Ending:

For the ending, this is another instance of “I can see what the author was trying to do, it just didn’t totally work.” She was trying to leave us on a cliffhanger, to get the reader excited to read the next book. It didn’t quite work here because when the story ends, the main conflict of Temperance’s story has not yet resolved. It almost felt like the story ended just when we hit the climax. I probably would have recommended the author keep writing for a little while longer, long enough for the evil of this story to be defeated. Or at least long enough to stave off the evil plan that this evil had planned. Either way, the ending didn’t quite work for me here.

Overall:

Overall, this novel didn’t quite work for me on a lot of different levels. But, just because it didn’t work for me, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. These are just things you should know and be aware of if you’re going to read it— so that you can decide for yourself if these are problems you can overcome or not.

Tempest opens the Dunton Legacy Series with four sisters and the loss of their Grandmother. Grandma had a story that she never got to tell the girls about their magical destiny. Each sister has to discover her powers, and hopefully find love along the way. Book one centers on 1 sister and her struggles regarding said powers and romance.
The story felt familiar to me. I wanted it to move a little quicker.

DNF. I spent 3 days really trying to read this book and I just couldn’t . I wanted to like it . The magic seamed interesting and I think it had a lot of potential but I was 7 chapters in and I had to give up maybe I’ll try again soon but I doubt it .
Here are my thoughts.
1. The amount of flash backs in this book is so unnecessary. I’ve never read that many and they are so so random. Some of them don’t matter or make sense to the story. They happen at random points and multiple times a chapter . One time it went from a flashback straight into a dream and I didn’t understand what was going on until the end of the chapter. It makes it hard to get into a story you don’t understand
2. When Anders is comforting her after the death of her grandmother he holds her in his lap and says she’s testing his libido… and they proceeds to kiss her and say he could’ve had her naked if he wanted to when she says it was a mistake. I’m sorry but her grandmother just passed this scene was so weird and inappropriate.
3. On the topic of Anders, he is said to be so shy to her he couldn’t even go knock on her door and say hello now all the sudden he’s forcing her to have conversations and being harsh towards her ? That doesn’t follow his attitude of not trying to scare her off that he says he has.
4. The author would do these random time jumps sometimes in the middle of the paragraph with no spacing or anything.
We actually skipped at one point and then there were more characters all of the sudden. Just didn’t work for me.
5. The amount of times she says there was something between Anders and Tempy using analogies to say it was like fate or magic was so unnecessary I read something along those lines at least twice a chapter , I get it they have a connection.
I couldn’t get into the book at all and maybe I’ll try again but I really doubt it .

This book was such a fun read for me! It was a mix of magic, mystery, humor, and romance, sprinkled with a few surprise twists that I did not see coming. The sisters have lived past lives together and the book contains flashbacks and dreams that increase as Tempy awakens to her powers. I got a little lost or confused once or twice, but I was able to catch back up as I continued reading.
I loved the different personalities of the sisters and how their elements or powers matched them. This book focuses on the oldest sister, Temperance or Tempy, who controls the element of water. It left me excited to continue reading the rest of the series to see how their different personalities react to their awakening powers. I'm especially excited to read Val's story. I get the feeling it is going to have me laughing out loud for most of it!
I also really liked the MMC Anders. I loved how Anders has always loved Tempy and tried to protect her. He had been too shy in the past to make his feeling for her know, so now that she has come back into his life, he is making up for his past mistakes. He can come off a little strong and possessive of Tempy, but I like it! Honestly, I think that is the approach Tempy needed for them to be able to have a relationship. She wouldn't have allowed room for a relationship to happen between them if he hadn't been so persistent. He is actually a very kind and upright guy and I love them together.
I am so excited to read the rest of this series! I look forward to reading anything else this author puts out.

This book is about four sisters who each represent an element. The main character for this book is Tempy, who controls water. Tempy is a scientist, but her life is upended by the sudden death of her grandmother. After the passing of the grandmother, Tempy and her sisters discover their magical family secret, and learn of the evils that begin to threaten their world.

Anders is the sheriff, and has been in love with Tempy since they were children. At first he really annoyed me, but by the end I was quite fond of him. The dynamics between Anders and Tempy were a little weird at times: they would be hot and heavy one moment and fussing at each other the next. Anders is gruff, pushy, and impatient, but Tempy can be neurotic and impulsive. Anders has a secret of his own, and I feel like they could be quite good together if they'd both chill for a moment.

Part of the plot drama involves her work as a scientist and her new shady boss. I enjoyed reading the book up until that point, but I couldn't put it down once all of that started to unfold, and that occurred near the end of the book. My only wish is that it would have started closer to the middle, as I felt like the end of the book is right where the story reached it's climax, and then it ended.

I loved all of the small town witchy vibes of this book, I think this is a great book to read in fall. I enjoyed it and will be reading the next one.

I thought this book was a fun and easy read. Once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down. The story moved along at a pace that kept me engaged and interested.

The premise of the book is that four sisters learn they are the guardians of four stones and that each of them have powers related to the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Tempy the MC is the guardian of water. In the beginning, Tempy struggles to accept who she is and what she can do, but as the story progresses she discovers she can do more than she realized.

Anders the MMC missed his chance with Tempy when they were in school together and he doesn't want to miss her again. Anders is this steadfast guy who doesn't give up even when Tempy is afraid of the connection they share. Through the whole story he is just there for her and I love it.

I think it is interesting how the bad guys are the four horsemen. I think it will be interesting to see where the story goes in the next book which is about Pru.

I received an arc copy to review this book honestly.
Personally I found the book interesting. Love the storyline on how these four sisters (💧🔥💨🌳) are protectors and discover that they have magical abilities. It reminds me of Charmed (has the vibes). I found it interesting that they needed their other parts (soulmates💘) to fight the four horsemen.
For being the first book in the series there was a lot of information that could’ve been spread out but since Tempest is the oldest I understand why the author decided to explain the majority in this book.
I sorta wish the POVs were divided so they weren’t so mixed up. I truly found it confusing when we were reading Tempest’s POV and then it switched to Ander’s. At least for me, it made it difficult to truly immerse myself into the story.
I literally can’t wait for Prudence’s story but to be honest I thought the author was gonna go in oldest to youngest order 😅.
Still excited!
(Giving the book four stars because it was truly entertaining and enjoyable. Even though I found it hard to distinguish the POVs I really loves the book and can’t wait for the next installment)
Honestly I found the slow burn funny because it was hot (ander) and cold (tempest). 😂😂

There's a cliffhanger at the end that will immediately have you reaching for book two.
The world building for this story does make the beginning a bit slower, but the rest of the story more than makes up for the beginning. I love all the different aspects of the world that are thrown in. The flashbacks to the past offer a lot of insight.
This story mainly follows Tempy and her coming to the realization of herself and her powers after the loss of her grandmother. I think her character grows a lot in the book but definitely has a lot of growing left to do.
I can't wait to learn more about the other sisters and how they learn to cope with their developing magic. I also hope we get more flashbacks to provide insight on the coming evil.

Fantastic! This new author captured my attention. Such a great story. 4 sisters each born in a different season & possessing a different element. Tempest was the oldest and was a scientist working to find a cure for a virus. After her Grandmother dies the 4 sisters start to learn of their geritage which they had no knowkedge of As Tempest works on her cure she starts having trouble at work. A creepy new boss, a clumsy assistant and gossip. It doesn't take long foe her life to erupt into turmoil. She knows that together the 4 sisters will have to defeat the evil brewing around them. Awesome characters and excellent world building. I can't wait for book 2.

This book reminds me of Nora Roberts. Magic, family ties and romance all wrapped up in what looks like will be a four book series. This first book introduces the four sisters and historical background that was confusing to follow as it was placed throughout the book. I would have preferred all the background at the start of the book and then move to current day. Overall, the book was easy to read but just stopped without resolving anything, forcing you to read the next in the series. This is a great start for a beginning author and I am interested to see her writing mature and evolve.

I thought this was a fast and easy read. I thought Anders was a great character. He is strong in his beliefs and holds to what he knows to be right and just. He doesn't waver. Not even in his desire to be with Tempy.
Tempy struggles with her self-worth in the beginning and their relationship helps her to realize her potential. Really they help each other to be the best version of themselves.
The bad guys are really bad. You could feel their menace.
I'm excited to read the next book. I think it will be interesting to see where the story goes and how it all comes together in the end.

I really struggled with this one at times but did manage to finish it. A story about 4 sisters who unbeknown to them are witches, it’s a bit like Groundhog Day only where they live multiple life’s all while trying to defeat unknown evil, and find their perfect partner. I did find the book was quite repetitive in places, and maybe some areas were overwritten, however I would like to read the other books in the series.

I received a free copy of this book, and am leaving my review voluntarily

Tempest is the first book in the Dunton Legacy Series. This series is about four sisters who find out that they have magical powers after a family secret comes to light. This is Temperance’s story. It’s full of mystery and secrets. It will keep you on the edge of your seat with every page turn. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series

As always be mindful of trigger warnings, what I like you may not.

Happy Reading!

I love the concept of this book, but really could not get into the MC's. It felt toxic, controlling, misogynistic and Tempy annoyed me to no end. The romance part did not read like an adult romance. Nothing the characters did made sense in that area, but their strong, deep connection was just supposed to make it believable. I found myself rolling my eyes far too often. I think there may be more potential with the other sisters, though, as they at least seem to have some semblance of a backbone. I'll probably try one more book in the series to see if it's better, because I like the converging story lines.

This book has a "Charmed" vibe, with magic and the sisters. Especially with one of them being Prudence.
Some of the back and forth between Tempy's dreams, real life and past life was a bit confusing. If it was separated out differently, it would have made it a little easier to read.
But, regardless, I enjoyed the storyline.

This book was an easy and fun read. I was hooked at the beginning with the farm house setting. Anders and Tempy were fun to follow. The magic system is fun and interesting. Thr author did a great job with the world building. I did struggle in a few areas as keeping sisters and their seasons/powers straight was hard for me but I'm very much looking forward to book two!

This book gave me all the witchy feels. Where has this book been hiding my entire life? I ate this story up and couldn’t put it down.

Tempest follows four magical sisters who don’t discover their magical abilities until after the passing of their grandmother. Buckle up for a magical journey, twists and turns and a story about self discovery.

I binged this book and regret nothing!

I absolutely loved reading this book!
It was a captivating blend of magic, mystery, humor, and romance, with unexpected twists that had me hooked. The sisters discover their powers as witches with elemental abilities based on their birth season, which they experience through flashbacks and dreams. Tempy demonstrated the effects of family separation through her loneliness despite her caring and loving nature, highlighting the importance of family unity.

I enjoyed the various personalities of the sisters, each aligned with their unique elemental powers. This part of the series concentrates on the oldest sister, Temperance (Tempy), who controls the water element. It left me looking forward to the rest of the series to see how their distinct personalities will interact with their awakening abilities.

I enjoyed reading about Anders in the story. His steadfast love for Tempy and his efforts to protect her added depth to their relationship. His persistence and possessiveness, which Tempy needed, ultimately paved the way for their bond to flourish. Anders is genuinely kind and upstanding, which makes their relationship even more endearing.

This story emphasizes the importance of having a supportive and united family. The author adeptly portrays this theme, and I look forward to exploring more of the series and any future works by this author.

4.5! Fantastic book
Four Sisters discover they are actually Witches, each hold an Elemental power based on their birth season (so cool). This story follows one of the sisters; Tempy and her love interest Ander (slow burn). So many amazing themes. Sisterhood, Soul mates, good versus evil and more. It has a mix of magic, mystery, humor, romance, and some surprise twists. You will love this magical story, it's perfect for the spooky season or just anyone looking for a fun read. I cannot wait for book2, and I have to add I absolutely loved the cover (beautiful work).

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received an Advance Reader Copy of Tempest. These are my true opinions.

I am rating this book a 3 stars.

I think the concept of the story is very good. Four sisters that are unknowingly witches need to figure out who and what they truly are after their grandmother dies. Their grandmother leaves them very vague instructions on how they are supposed to defeat an unknown evil.

Throughout the story you learn that the sisters have lived multiple Iifes. All of them different but all having the same goal, defeat the evil.

They learn they must make their powers stronger by finding their pair however to be wary of the wrong one for one is out to get them.

The evil described is known as the 4 horseman. I am assuming each sister is to overcome a horseman.

Each sister also represents one of the four elements. Temperance born in winter represents water. Valour born in summer represents fire. Prudence born in spring represents earth. Justice born in fall represents air. Each sister also has a special power that represents their element.

Book one is based around Temperance known as Tempy. She works at this medical science lab that specializes in viruses. She has also just recently moved back to her hometown to where we also meet Anders or Sheriff Anders. Anders is the MMC and love interest for Tempy. He has been secretly in love with Tempy since they were kids. Her being back in town is his shot at telling her how he really feels.

That is about all I will reveal so as to not give away main spoilers.

I like the concept of the story along with the magical connection each sister has. I felt this book was longer than it needed to be. There are times when there is extra information regarding the character building that was not needed. I also did not like that fact that after a big event would take place, it would be seen through one character then back track go back to the beginning of the event and you would then read it from the opposite characters view point second for second. I felt this made the book longer than needed. Don’t get me wrong the way the author words things and describes things is written well. I just think some parts were over written.

I also felt that the build up to the end was a lot.

If you love long story buildup and a slow burn then this is book for you.
If you like a bit of magic this book is for you as well.

The story was good. I can see where it’s headed. If each book is going to revolve around each sister then I feel this book ended with way too much information left in the air in regards to Tempys story.

The love story is definitely a slow burn if you will. I actually like slow burn romance in books. I did not like how Anders approached Tempy in the beginning of the book. Demanding to be seen and heard. Him not giving her the option of choice put me off. A little plot twist has me understanding a drop of why he is the way he is. Anders grew on me towards the end and I definitely mean the end.

I think that each book in this series will resonate differently book to book. I would definitely give the second book a chance when it comes out in the fall. Which I do believe is going to revolve around Pru (Prudence).

I think Valour will be my favorite sister.

Which is also why I say I think each book will be different because each sister is different.
