A hundred nights, a hundred ghost stories. A troubled youth named Yuma begins the dangerous game of ‘A Hundred Ghost Stories’, where it’s said that a vengeful spirit will be summoned once a hundred ghoulish tales are told…
I quite like short form horror manga and I have previously heard great things about this series, so I was thrilled about this volume randomly popping up on NetGalley. And I was absolutely not disappointed here. The story revolves around this urban legend that says that a real ghost will appear if you tell a hundred ghost stories. For some reason that’s exactly what the young boy Yuma wants to achieve and so he starts telling scary stories to a camera in his room. Every chapter of this manga is a whole new story, only connected by Yuma sitting in his room, talking to no one in particular. The stories did not hold back in the slightest and the thought of a young boy telling them made everything even more unsettling. This first volume holds the first ten stories and they all were very solid while covering a variety of different creepy situations. We have dead people showing up in peoples houses, a weird little clay man getting a bit too attached to his creator, snails growing inside human heads and much more. The stories ranged from dark to gross to weird, and I had a great time reading them. The art style takes some getting used to, but the creepiest panels in every chapter always delivered. The overarching plot about Yuma is not uninteresting as well, although I can already imagine his motive for telling the ghost stories. I think the structure of this series is quite susceptible to becoming repetitive and I really hope that future volumes will know how to keep readers on their toes. Overall this was a fantastic horror manga read for me and I absolutely need to get my hands on the next volumes now.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Seven Seas Entertainment for providing a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.
picked this up on a whim at the book store and omg! exactly my type of horror, with the unsettling intros and outros by the little boy? what a genius way of creating dread throughout the entire thing. some genuinely creepy tales in this, immediately going to read the second one 👀
This one was recommended to me, & I throughly enjoyed this! Great horror manga, that gave off Junji Ito vibes! Really well done eerie tales, with moments of humor! I was impressed with the writer, as I came to find out they were new to the horror genre!
Quite surprised by this. It was much darker than I thought it was gonna be. And the drawings were creepy af! Can’t wait to continue on and see what the next stories are.
It’s never too late, što bi se reklo!
Male horor relax sesije.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of 100 Ghost Stories That Will Lead to My Own Death Vol. 1.
If you like Junji Ito's style of horror, you will love this. I am interested to read more of Anji Matono! I think the juxtaposition of having a young child tell these insanely creepy stories is just magnificent. Had me uncomfortable and anxious the whole time!
10 short ghost stories. It's definitely horror and it gets pretty dark. The art is a bit wonky, but I like it, it really works for this genre. This is PTSD Radio light I would say. 3.5 stars.
We see a kid who’s seriously telling very dark stories to us the audience and my god, you honestly think to yourself where the f did he get to make up these wack stories at his age?! LOL
It’s really much that he’s probably inspired by Junji Ito but anyways it’s a really good scary short story collection that pretty much will give u a few jump scares.
It’s a pretty well done story to keep ya entertained!
At first I was not crazy about the stories or art style, but it grew on me with time. The stories also got better towards the end. Best part for me was the nostalgia of scary stories, I would have loved to retell these and claimed them as my own as a kid.
I need the rest of the volumes!!! Enjoyed the short stories & yep some were really creepy esp if you think it would happen in real life. Also love the artwork.
Easily binged six volumes in a day. The story immediately grabs you and keeps you interested the whole way through. The format of a different short story each chapter is great for those who use TikTok. The longer main story in the background is a mystery that also makes you want to keep reading to find out what is going on with that plot line. Any libraries that get this get the whole set bc readers are going to want it all at once.
Anji Matono does a great job as a horror writer, specially considering he used to write comedy.
Pleasingly surprised by how spooky and satisfying are these stories, even though they are all pretty short. Some tenuous Junji Ito vibes, the art really matches the narrative.
I just love kumcer so much especially horror. It took us to see how our mc, yuuma, a lil boy start telling us about the ghost stories (which he plan to tell till it reachs 100). Im so sorry for what happened to him, but in the near end where he could sacrifice hina I swear I wouldnt forgive him 😭 (though he made the right choice). Papa den mama tirinya t papa mati sih mmng dakjal semua. Overall its 4/5⭐ karena sy merasa charanya yuuma ini cerita hantunya kadang terlalu dewasa I mean klo dia remaja masih bisa kita bicarakan ini dia literally anak sd 😭.

"100 Ghost Stories That Will Lead to My Own Death Vol. 1" by Anji Matono is an innovative horror manga!!! The illustrations are extremely scary and one-of-a-kind!!! I love how each ghost story is unique and that they stand alone from one another. I'm curious what volume two will be like! I will warn that the content of this manga is dark and disturbing so if you're not interested in reading a dark collection of horror themed stories I would skip this manga. This manga gives off Junji Ito vibes, but trust me it's completely in its own league! Some triggers warnings to consider if you do choose to read this manga are: suicide, murder, depression, and graphic violence to name a few of the big ones. Overall if you enjoy horror and like manga, this is for sure worth a read!!! Be warned that it is extremely dark and creepy!!! It's a perfect scary Halloween read!!!
DNFed. Read the first 4 stories. I like horror manga, but sadly couldn’t get into this one. Maybe it’s because I read horror mainly whether their novels or manga so this felt a bit on the younger side for me. Sure there’s gore and some eerie moments, but eh. Unfortunately I bought volumes 1 and 2 and don’t think I’ll even bother with the next volume. I think it also didn’t help in my case that there was 10 stories and to have that many in one small volume, they are very short. So by the time you get what’s supposed to be the shocking part, it’s over. I think others that like horror manga could like this, but maybe not if you prefer more depth to each story perhaps
Was skeptical about this because I'm not a fan of the art style but I shouldn't have judged because these stories ended up being so solid and entertaining! And the concept of the boy telling these stories to a camera in his room is really intriguing, I'm super interested to see where that leads to. Definitely for fans of Junji Ito btw!
The Companion - 2/5 Lost Objects - 3/5 Clayman - 1/5 Special Delivery - 4.5/5 The Call of the Water - 4/5 Life Line - 5/5 The Hand-off Guy - 5/5 Fight - 4.5/5 The Other Side - 5/5 Snails - 5/5 (absolute nightmare fuel!!!)
This first manga sets up the basic premise of the book. A young girl told her classmate who was going to jump out the window that he could meet a real ghost by telling one horror story a night for 100 nights. We get the first 100 ghost stories. They're ok. The really interesting part is wondering what the kid is telling these stories to, and the growing situation that seems to be escalating in the moments right before and after the boy tells his story. Beyond that, it's interesting to wonder what each story might reflect on the boy's life.
No surprise that when you load up Goodreads the "If you liked this, you'll like..." is filled to the brim with Junji Ito and Msaaki Nakayama, this is very short form horror stories, some of which are gross, some not, all supernatural tinged, in the format of a boy telling *someone* 100 stories, one story per chapter. Like any short story book, the quality varies, but they're all darker and are a variety of ages and types, even in these six in volume 1.
I've had my eye on this series for a while but hadn't picked it up yet, but we start today!
I love horror short stories and in a manga format like this, it's effective to give you a little spook then move on to the next one. Given this first volume only had 10 stories, I'm guessing there will be about 10 of these, and I'm here for it!
I'll take any and all the horror manga as I've pretty much read all the Junji Ito out there. Some of the artwork in this reminded me of PTSD Radio, another favorite of mine. Looking forward to checking out more!
