Four months after the events of Murder Off Mike, Sacramento talk radio host Shauna J. Bogart investigates the jail break of Jasmine, the celebrity bad girl du jour, known only by her first name. Jasmine had been in prison awaiting trial for the murder of disk jockey Johnny Venture. Shauna J.'s investigation leads her in pursuit of Jasmine, as Jasmine herself seeks the truth about Johnny Venture's fate.
I absolutely hate talk radio so I admit to picking this book up only because it had headphones on the cover and I needed them to complete a challenge. I was pleasantly surprised by this enjoyable cozy mystery set in the radio world. I liked Shauna J. and found the mystery intriguing and it honestly kept me guessing until the end which is always nice. I would definitely read more in this series.
Fresh from solving the mystery in "Murder Off Mike", our gutsy heroine, Shauna J. Bogart, is presented by another body. This one was found near the unconscious Jasmine, a local girl who made good as a singer until she didn't. Jasmine has compounded the problem by escaping custody. The clues begin to add up and Shauna is on the case. Unfortunately, her personal life has hit a bumpy patch. Her lover, Peter, is unaccountably off on a business venture.
A further benefit is Ms. Krieg's ability to establish a real sense of time and place. She can also explain, even to luddites like me, how radio stations worked before computers.
I love Joyce Krieg. Worked with her for a couple of years, and I am a huge fan of her writing. I'll never forget her anecdotes about Rush Limbaugh, who nicknamed her "Blitz" - they worked together in Sacto and she says he was the hardest working man in radio...she should know, she's a great mystery writer! I LOVE talk radio, have listened since the 60s, and I bemoan the loss of independent radio stations, so this was perfect for me.
