Jean Adamson was a British writer and illustrator of children's books. She was best known for the Topsy and Tim books, the first of which was published in 1960 and which have sold 27 million copies. Adamson's creations were also featured widely on television in 84 episodes of Topsy and Tim.
This is another childhood favourite from the Topsy and Tim series. In this exciting episode Tim has bumped his head falling out of the apple tree. Mummy and Topsy take him to hospital to have an x-ray.
What I really loved about these books was they showed you every step of the story in wonderful detailed pictures. You saw Mummy packing his bag, a nurse unpacking it for him, a porter taking him off for the x-ray and other details children are interested in like what they eat in hospital and what the toy area looks like.
This was such a fun read, I remember reading this to myself again and again. I loved the ending where Topsy and Tim play doctors and nurses helping teddies and their patient cat get bandages and plasters. This brought back happy memories of my daughter's favourite game for many years 'cat hospital' Cat lovers will be glad to know only teddy cats were helped in this way!
I have quite a few of these books that I have bought over the years and my children loved them. Never thought my grandchildren would one day be enjoying them too. A great introduction to reading and this book was really helpful when a couple of my children had to go to hospital. Books like this one take away the fear of hospital visits and help calm a child. Really love these books. Recommended for young children.
Another title in the T&T series for preparing children for unique life experiences.
Tim has hurt his head in a fall and is going into hospital to be checked out. He and Topsy pack a bag, he goes to the children's ward, has an xray taken, has to spend time without his family, plays with other children there - and makes Topsy jealous.
I don't know how useful this would be as preparation - do children run around wards with injuries? Can't parents stay (no experience yet of this)? But it does give parents a chance to talk a child through the various parts of the hospital visit, staff, and what happens there,
Liked the end - Tim is safely back home and the twins are happily playing with Topsy's new doctors' kit. There is also a 'search and find' activity after the story (in the new edition) where readers look for objects around the children's ward.
There are numerous books that boast the title, Topsy and Tim go to … or Topsy and Tim at the… or Topsy and Tim have their... therefore these books cover a wide range of topics. For me these books started my enjoyment of firstly being read to and then learning to read independently. I own many copies that were first published in 1977 but Topsy and Tim stories are still being published today.
Topsy and Tim go to the hospital is a particular favourite of mine. The story begins with Tim having fallen out of the apple tree and therefore needs to go to the hospital. The story carefully takes the reader through the terminology that we encounter in hospitals such as ‘wards’, ‘x-ray’ whilst Tim under goes treatment. To involve Topsy her Dad buys her a nurse’s outfit. However, the newly published book has adapted this so that she receives a Doctors set with a stethoscope, possibly to be less gender specific. Regardless of which dated version of Topsy and Tim story, they are a great tool in explaining everyday experiences in a fictional way and help young readers engage in discussion on a variety of topics.
One of my all time favourites originally read by my 4 year old self in 1985 it's a roller coaster of adrenaline emotion and relief !!!!! Tim's fall from a tree is hit and miss he's clearly concussed and mummy and topsy take him into hospital for observation . The climatic point was when they decide to keep tim in over night and topsy wants to stay too ! Of course all ends well but it is a rocky read !
One of the two picture books that has worked best in preparing Miss 2 for upcoming surgery. It helps make the children's hospital seem like a fun, welcoming, and safe place while also covering things like x-rays, a glimpse at why other kids might be in the hospital, and playing doctor at home afterwards.
This book could be used to help children who are going into hospital to feel calmer about this, it could also be read to children who have siblings in hospital as it shows both sides of events. This book gives the message that hospitals aren’t scary places and the doctors and nurses will look after you.
My daughter loves this book it is great as I used to read this when I was younger so it is wonderful to share this with her. It is a book all about tim going to hospital and would really help any child that is going to hospital understand what happens and reduce any anxiety. The book is easily written with some colourful images.
Another fun one. In this Tim has banged his head and needs to go to hospital. Nice descriptions of the children's ward, having an X-ray and having to still go to school. topsy gets sad at home by herself but Tim is having lots of fun with new friends. Not very realistic of a child spending a night away with a possible head injury but a nice gentle introduction for kids.
