Entering the Diamond Way: My Path Among the Lamas
Lama Ole Nydahl has now set up over 350 Karma Kagyu Buddhist Centers throughout the world, which are under the spiritual guidance of the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje. Entering the Diamond Way is about his entrance into Buddhism about 35 years ago now.
This is the genuinely compelling story, and spiritual odyssey, of Ole and Hannah Nydahl, who in 1968 became the first Western students of the great Tibetan master, His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.
Their exciting travels on the worn path between the green lowlands of Europe to the peaks of the Himalayas, led them to experience the skillful teachings of numerous Tibetan lamas who helped transform their lives into "limiteless clarity and joy."
From their first contact with Tibetan Buddhism in Kathmandu in the form of a lama with extraordinary psychic powers, Ole and Hannah encountered the full spectrum of the Buddhist "view."

After being recognized and trained by some of the greatest lamas of the Kagyu lineage, Ole now transmits the blessings of the lineage and travels as authorized lama and Buddhist meditation master, teaching and establishing centers of Tibetan Buddhism, while Hannah is a much sought-after translator. Their countless friends everywhere work hard to assure that the prophecy of Padmasambhava is fulfilled:

Since the early 1970s, Nydahl has toured the world giving lectures and meditation courses. With his wife, Hannah Nydahl (1946-2007), he founded Diamond Way Buddhism, a worldwide Karma Kagyu Buddhist organization with over 600 centers for lay practitioners.
Nydahl is the author of more than twenty books (in German and English) about Diamond Way Vajrayana Buddhism, with translations into multiple languages. Sáu hạnh nguyện Bồ Tát Giới - Trích dẫn từ sách.
1. Bố thí. Bố thí bao gồm cả thân, khẩu, ý, những thứ của cải vật chất, nền giáo dục và sự bảo vệ. Bố thí là cây cầu kết nối các chúng sinh khác và làm giàu có tâm hồn của hành giả. Điều đó có nghĩa là không nắm giữ những vật mình ưa thích, những kinh nghiệm dễ chịu cho mình, thay vào đó là chia sẻ rộng rãi cũng như nhìn nhận người cho, người nhận và vật bố thí trong một tổng thể thống nhất.
2. Trì giới (Sống đúng). Điều này có nghĩa là sử dụng thân, khẩu, ý một cách thiện xảo để làm những việc mang lại hạnh phúc lâu dài và tránh những việc gây hại.
3. Nhẫn nhục (Hạnh kham nhẫn). Phẩm chất này chủ yếu là để tránh sự sân hận. Theo cách này, hành giả có thể tránh phá huỷ những hạt giống phúc báu đã tích tập được.
4. Tinh tấn (Sự chăm chỉ, siêng năng). Điều này giúp cho hành giả mở rộng những khả năng thực tập và phát triển, đồng thời không bao giờ thoả mãn với những kết quả mà mình đã đạt được.
5. Hành thiền (Một trong sáu ba la mật). Đây không phải là phương pháp cao nhất để hành giả nhận ra bản chất của tâm. Mục đích của hành thiền ở đây là tạo ra khoảng cách. Với hành thiền, hành giả có thể lựa chọn một cách tỉnh thức hài kịch cho cuộc đời và tránh bi kịch. Dần dần, sự nhìn sâu về mặt lý thuyết sẽ trở thành một kinh nghiệm đầy đủ và có ích cho hành giả trong những tình huống thực tế.
6. Trí huệ. Đây không phải là sự nhìn thấu suốt tự nhiên mà vẫn chứa đựng những khái niệm thế gian. Năm phương pháp đầu giống như những đôi chân khoẻ để hành giả có thể tiến lên phía trước còn trí huệ giống như đôi mắt sáng để hành giả có thể bước đi đúng hướng. Bản chất của trí huệ cho biết thực hành điều lành là tự nhiên bởi vì chủ thể, khách thể và hành động hoàn toàn phụ thuộc lẫn nhau và gieo nhân nào sẽ nhận về quả ấy.

Hippie travelogue from someone who was in the right place at the right time. He and his lovely wife. What karma! Excellent read. Would like to read by him: The Way Things Are
What I didn't agree with: only staying with one teacher to avoid confusion (some schools do advise that) and his thinly veiled swipe at Chogyam Trungpa when discussing the older Western nun who somehow was involved with them going west.

Fascinating book, exceeded my expectations. I think beginning of the book is in the ”travel book” category, interesting to read about the hippie age in Nordic. Although Hannah and Ole never stop the travel, later they explain more more deeply about their spiritual study under Tibetan lamas.
To summarize it is a story how Diamond Way Buddhism found it’s way to the western cultural sphere.
It’s not perfect book. Although educated western people, they still Ole and Hannah have their own beliefs. I or no-one is able to judge, because I have my own. To me there is a bit too superstition and kind of magic accepted at face value.
What is on the other hand interesting is to understand about different kinds of meditation practices, what kind of qualities they develop and what kind of masters there are.
I recommend this book to:
* anyone who is interested in meditation and learning about the Diamond Way meditation. To me the Diamond Way was already familiar, I’ve been 16. Karmapa Meditation for years, but I have not taken the initiations yet.
or
* anyone who wants hear about benefits of meditation over psychedelics.

Lama Ole is not your usual lama, he is known for his controversial opinions on Islam as well as his everlasting energy .(He became a father for the third time well into his eighties).
Tibetan lamas usually reserve the kind of stories Nydahl tells in this book for their closest disciples. That Lama Ole has decided to share them so openly is truly a gift. The book is exciting, full of adventures, and also full of the love story between him and his now deceased wife, Hannah, of whom wonderful things are always recounted.

This is a pretty amazing story of a man who went to India and Nepalwith his new wife to smuggle drugs back to Denmark for their friends. What happens instead? They find a Tibetan style of Buddhism and essentially become Lamas, translators and pioneers in the West for developing Buddhism. ...A little crazy but a wonderful and colorful true story.
Lama Ole writes a little crudely - he jumps around a lot. His lectures are executed in the same manner. But he has so many stories to tell, I hardly blame him.

A fascinating story of Lama Ole and his late wife Hannah and their meeting with the great 16th Karmapa. The story talks about their early years, hippie life, encountering the Dharma and meeting the great masters of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. A must read.

prostě je to skvělý: o tom, jak Ole Nydahl potkal na Východě 16. Karmapu a díky tomuto setkání mají nyní statisíce jeho žáků na Západě přístup k nadčasovým hodnotám buddhismu!
