Now what would they do? They couldn't go home, not with the cops sitting on their steps waiting for them. They needed a place to hide-- a good place, for it might be for a long, long time. Zach looked around the big, clean, carpeted room. It was much nicer than home. Why couldn’t they hide out here? Besides, no one would ever think of looking for them in a church! Abandoned by their mother, the Fleming kids run out of food and steal from the corner grocery store. To avoid being caught by the owner, they hop on a Sunday school bus. Whisked off to church, they discover the perfect place to hide.
Sweet little book perfect for explaining the way that God can answer prayers, in ways that are exactly as we want and, sometimes, in not so obvious ways. I think that it is a good book for children exploring religion, specifically Evangelical Christian faith, and wanting to learn more about Christianity. I enjoyed the innocence of Zach, Missy, and Karen as they tried to navigate the world for a few weeks on their own. Everything was realistic to me throughout the book up until the end of the book. I guess my problem was the mother making a complete 180 from abandoning her children for more than 2 weeks and, prior to that, regularly being, what seemed to be, a neglectful and, occasionally, verbally and emotionally abusive. By the end of the book she seemed like she was ready to become a standup citizen with plans on working her way to World's Best Mom. I am a believer that people can change but I was and remain skeptical about the amazing turn of events this mother experienced in just a few page. It was a lovely read and the children were believable throughout.
Short evangelistic story that doesn't offer much in terms of substance. This story is primarily transportation for Bible verses. Even as Christian it left much desired.
