Like the other titles in the “First Year” series, The First Year—IBS offers two distinct advantages. First, it is written by a patient-expert, Heather Van Vorous, who has managed her IBS for more than fifteen years and knows firsthand what’s required to manage her condition. Second, it guides readers through their first seven days following diagnosis, then the next three weeks of the first month, and finally the next eleven months of their first year, offering answers and advice to guide those with IBS into their new lifestyle. Starting with the day of diagnosis, Van Vorous provides detailed information about trigger foods, safe foods, soluble versus insoluble fiber, tips for eating and cooking, traveling, eating out, exercise, and much more. The First Year—IBS will inspire and educate those with IBS as no other guide does.
Yep...I am putting this embarrassing admission out there for all to see only because I know how much those of us with digestive issues suffer. Why? Because this book changed my life!
I went through the full barrage of medical tests before finally being diagnosed by exclusion about 4 years ago. Heather's book gave me more information than even my gastroenterologist did! "You might want to avoid dairy.", he said. Really?! That's the main piece of advice you give to your patients?! Oy!
With the help of this book, I now have a MUCH better understanding of what IBS is, soluable vs insoluable fiber, and how to deal with it all. The medical community doesn't seem to be behind us so we have to be our own advocates and educate ourselves. This book will absolutely help do that!
If you can only buy one book after being diagnosed, this is the one!
This book opened my eyes to lots of things relating to my upset/nervous stomach. Since buying & reading this book, I have changed eating habits & miraculously most of my stomach problems have vanished.
I love, love, love Heather Van Vorous. Even though this is my 12th year living with IBS, I learned so much and many times that the coping mechanisms I developed on the fly WERE indeed helping my IBS.
The best book if you’re absolutely clueless about IBS, or even if you feel like you have it mostly under control. This author literally covers every aspect of the disorder.
Read to learn, in order to help a family member navigate the issue. Very well-explained with extremely helpful and practical advice on living with a chronic disorder.
