Molly is a young Penobscot woman bouncing from foster home to foster home. Vivian is a 91 year old woman who was orphaned as a young child, and becomes a passenger on an orphan train. The stories of Molly and Vivian become intertwined when Molly, as a community service project, helps Vivian sort through artifacts of her extraordinary life. Set in Maine and Minnesota, their shared stories develop into a gentle friendship that nurture them both.

A wonderful story about the orphan train chapter of our nation's history, interwoven with a contemporary tale of a young mixed race woman aging out of the foster care system. Each expressing the human need for a sense of belonging. That native people would only portage that which was essential for life ahead was an effective metaphor that tied the characters lives together quite beautifully.

I had not heard about the orphan trains previous to picking up this book. I enjoyed that this was written as a historical fiction making it a much easier read than if I had tried to read about this time period in textbook format. It was still educational.
