This book is gorgeous: smooth pages, colorful photos, clear recipes and instructions. The opening section on ingredients details the flavors of and regional preferences for a fairly comprehensive list of spices.
I've tried 3 or 4 recipes so far, and they've turned out quite good. The small photos of the dishes at each step in the recipe are especially helpful.
I have no clue how truly authentic the recipes in Simple Indian Cookery are, but they seem to deliver excellent - and fairly goof-proof - easy approximations of many standard Indian dishes. Especially helpful is the inclusion of a Vegetables section (great dishes for vegetarians), and a handful of menu suggestions at the back of the book for casual family dinners through elegant dinner parties.
Oh how I love everything other people make from this little book (and I'm encouraging Mike to check out more of her cookbooks!). I've made a one or two things from here -- yummy creamy spicy spinach.
