Mom and Dad died with a secret. One that would irrevocably change my life.
After receiving the news of my parents death, I find myself moving across the country to live with my cousin and his wife. Darkwall is nice enough. The people are a little nosy, the town isn't all that big, and it rains here more than I've probably seen in all my life. But there's a certain charm here. A charm that is likely attributed to the three obnoxiously handsome guys I've found myself thinking of more and more.
It takes only a day to embarrass myself and make an enemy of Dion Stallard. It takes only two days for me to become the sole focus of Vaughn Bowers attention, and only four days for me to reveal a strange secret I didn't know I'd been keeping in front of Beckett Caudry. But, despite their undeniable good looks and mouth watering scents that make me dizzy, there's something else hiding beyond the surface of the three most popular boys in Darkwall High. Something dark. Something sinister. And something not entirely human.
And the more I get to know them, the more questions arise, until I'm stumbling across family secrets of my own. Secrets that tilt my world on its axis and draws forth more questions than I'd have ever thought to ask. Especially when it becomes glaringly obvious that... I might not be entirely human either.
*This is a Reverse Harem novel and does contain scenes intended for mature audiences. *Recommended for readers of the ages 18+ due to adult content, strong language and violence.
JJ resides in her very own land of fantasy created by many a daydream, reality often nothing more than an ancient myth. When she isn't lost inside her own head, she's buying one way tickets to procrastination station, where she stays watching Disney movies, reading amazing books by incredible authors, eating all the food she can get her hands on, and falling down the rabbit hole that is Pinterest, seeking inspiration for her next book. She occasionally adults when the need calls for it, where she looks after her babies, both with and without fur.
This had a pretty good premise and the characters were all intriguing. It was interesting to get to know the characters and discover their secrets but I also wish that we had gotten to learn more about them earlier in the book. The story moved really slow in my opinion, especially considering it ended on a cliffhanger and I finally tracked down on the authors TikTok that it's going to be a trilogy. Which I didn't see before I started reading. I just wish some answers had come out earlier to make the story move along and give more of an idea of what was truly happening with our heroine. It felt like nothing was explained with actual details until well after the 50% mark and by then I was already bored enough that I just wanted to skim to get to the end.
Overall, I think this was an okay book and I mostly enjoyed the reading experience. Part of me wishes I had known it was going to end on a cliffhanger since I hate surprise endings like that, but at the same time I know I would have felt like the story was even slower if I knew it wasn't going to end with this book. Currently, I do think I'd come back to the series once it's complete to see what happens.
Damn this was good. Like damn. But what was that cliffhanger? That’s criminal.
I went into this book relatively blind. I’d heard some quotes and stuff as well as some specific scenes that got me very interested. Imagine my surprise when it apparently turned out to be a reverse harem with vampires? Can it even get better?
I went in with pretty high expectations, and this book MET THEM ALL. It was absolutely incredible.
In this book we follow Eerie (cool name), who’s new into town and is starting a new school. There she meets some boys, of course. But there is something up with them. Why do they smell to weird? What is happening to Eerie, herself? What are the secrets her cousin is keeping from her?
I absolutely loved the different relationships between the main characters. They all had their own personality and relationships. I also surprisingly really enjoyed the “bully romance” aspect. It might be because it wasn’t really bullying, more on the prank side, as well as the character having a good reason for meting all moody. The fact that they all were obsessed with her is a big plus, of course. Who doesn’t like that? But despite that, it was pretty healthy. (I freaking love Cass, btw) Naya is fine, ig.
I really like the MC. Even though she really just should have talked with people or asked for help at times. She knew her cousin was hiding something, she knew Becket saw her flicker. She could have talked to them or something. It wasn’t really a big issue, though. I still really enjoyed her. She was funny.
This book did contain some stupid people, though. Mystic, what the hell were you doing? What were you thinking? So much could have gone so much smoother if he had listened to his wife. Damn. Girls know better.
As well as great characters, writing was really good. The pacing was alright. It was a bit slow at times. I genuinely can’t wait for the next book in this series. Especially with that damn cliffhanger??? Damn.
Also, a big fat thanks to this book for getting me out of my reading slump. (It’s possible it’ll put me in another, too)
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book (thank you so much🙏) in n exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
this was entertaining for sure! i did think the fmc was a little stupid sometimes - she'd overhear secret convos (that kinda spelled out exactly what was happening...) or receive a book that ALSO explained everything, but then she'd just forget about the convo, or not follow it up, or not read further in the book? girl stop pissing me off. even once she started connecting some dots, she was still acting a little too dumb for my liking. also she brushed over her entire family's death reallll fast.
but other than that, this was addictive, highly amusing trash, and the characters were fun. plus some of the plot concepts were pretty interesting! now i await book 2...
This had potential, but it was ultimately held back by several factors. At times, this felt like an RH Twilight but with far more plot holes and in dire need of editing. Heads up, at the beginning, there was a slight hint of bully romance from one MMC, but it was so mild (compared to other books these days, not compared to any scale based in reality) that it didn't really bother me even though I tend to give those books a hard pass. Also, Dion had enough of a reason (for the first encounter at least) that it was at least understandable. It was a mix of "you're not you when you're hungry" and "you're not you when you're facing the imminent erasing of who you've been for the past 100 years."
I'm not sure where to begin with all the plot holes. 1. They've had 100 years to plan what the 3 guys will do when they start to go feral, yet there seems to be no plan. I don't remember any mention of whether Vaughn and Beckett will have to kill Dion, even though they kill the other feral. They also don't seem to care about human casualties since they're still bringing the ticking time bomb of a vampire to a high school full of students every day.
2. At no point in the book do they explain why all these vampires are choosing to go to high school, why no one questions 3 unrelated underage guys living together in a mansion with no guardian, or why Naya and the 3 guys choose to go to the same high school despite the bad blood between them
3. The school setting is a joke. No one does any homework or studies for any tests. It's just a place for the MCs to sit next to each other.
4. There was no explanation for how they covered up their battles with feral hordes, sometimes in public parking lots, or the resulting bonfires. Also, some of those fires were in forests, but they never seemed concerned about wildfires speading.
5. At one point, the FMC just whips out a bag of her own blood that she apparently filled the night before? Where did she get an empty blood bag? How did she perform a blood draw on herself? There was no hint prior to this that anyone in the household had medical supplies or medical training.
Tbh, there were probably lots more I just didn't bother to note.
So what did I like? I like that the author didn't go for the obvious cliffhanger and end the book right after the MC learns the truth. I love big books. On the other hand, I was burnt out by the book by the time it ended. I have no idea whether I'll read book 2. I was ready for it to end, but the actual cliffhanger was a decent one.
The story is good, I like the characters for the most part. I feel like this book could have had some more editing. There were quite a few spelling errors. Also, some words were used way too often, and that drove me crazy. But like I said, good story idea, and the ending had me looking forward to the 2nd book.
This was really good, really well written, but also really slow. Like information was dripped through at an excruciating pace. And I felt Eerie was a little bit of an idiot, she refused to ask for help, she refused to acknowledge anyone who could help her. She overheard the convo with Mystic and CeCe. She knew Beckett saw her flicker. Cass literally gave her the book with all the answers and told her to come talk to him when she was ready. Beckett also told her he would be there to talk when she was ready. But she buried her head, refused to confront any of them for answers, refused to remain Mystic tell her what he was hiding, refused to read the book Cass gave her or ask him for more info, refused to even talk to Beckett about her flicker and once she'd realised the guys were vamps by tricking them no less, she refused to confront them and ask for more info but instead pushed them away and avoided them like the plague. And then got seriously butt hurt that they were keeping 'secrets'. But she wasn't exactly shouting her own secret from the roof was she?! I can understand her being upset with Mystic but not with the guys. This would have been an amazing book if the pace had been faster, so much boring and irrelevant stuff like describing her morning routine and her outfit every day, describing her drive home and her snacks and stuff. It was half way through the book before she even started looking into the supernatural stuff. It could probably have lost 200 pages and been just add good if not better. I'm a quick reader but this felt like it dragged because there was so much boring every day stuff happening around the fun interactions.
Which is a shame because the storyline was amazing, and I love her relationships with the guys, her secret liking of Vaughn's creepy ways, her easy going relationship with Beckett and especially her amazing prank wars with Dion. The banter throughout was top notch and I don't think I have ever read so many creative insults!
Is this an educational book or a book for entertainment?
I read this book for pure entertainment purposes.
What genres do you think this book belongs to?
Contemporary, Fantasy, Paranormal, Psychology, Romance, Young Adult
What was your favorite part of the book?
My favorite part is when she finds the coffee shop.
Who would you suggest this book to?
Anyone who like slow burns, vampires, and RH.
What is your general opinion/ rating of this book?
Sadly, I didn't care for this book, and I really wanted to like it. I prefer long, slow-burn RH romances. But the pacing in this book was off. There were scenes where it seemed to drag; however, there were others that I would have liked more of an explanation on but were quickly brushed aside. I also didn't care for the MC's attitude. I didn't mind that she had mental health issues; it's just the way she treated people. Ghosting people just isn't cool in my book. But since she is the MC, everyone waits for her to come to them on her terms. I felt like she was being unfair to her family and friends in certain parts. Don't get me wrong, I think all the characters were idiots. Especially, how they handled the MC coming into her abilities. Like what was her cousin thinking, and where the heck has he been half of the time? He knows it's dangerous for her, but he leaves her alone to be hunted by rogue vampires! Overall, this book couldn't hook me because it had too many plot holes, and there was no actual resolution at the end of the first book.
Are there any cliché scenes or concepts?
Fated mates, by magic. The MC is born special and her parents. The MC parents were murdered and did not die in a car accident.
At what “burn” level is the romance?
Slow burn.
Love interests, how many of them are there and what gender?
There are three love interests, all them males, and vampires.
Beckett- The most normal one of the group, and he still stalked the MC... just saying.

I really enjoyed this book, I was a twilight fan in my youth, as I’ve gotten older and read much better books this one for me had a lot of ‘twilight’ themes but with much better characters
The FMC Eerie actually had a personality and sass which I loved! Plus we get 3x hot vampire MMC’s Vaughn, Dion and Beckett, we have our golden retriever, grumpy and quiet reliable characters who were all funny and had the ‘guy best friend’ vibes.
This book made me physically laugh at the banter and I loved that it didn’t seem to take itself too seriously even when making twilight references.
I enjoyed that the plot wasn’t skipped weeks in advance but act like it’s only been days or it’s only been days but act like it’s been months. It was a day by day play but not too over the top.
Where it lost some stars for me; There were some plot errors that I just find throw me off the scene when I’m reading, being in one room then described as being in another The lack of notice or recovery of something that would take much longer The ‘mystery’ she was solving just took too long for me, she knew what it was and there seemed to be a long lag before it all came out and then it came out in a cringy ‘drunk scene’ The filler I was ok with initially but started getting a bit much, if we’re needing a description of how to eat an apple and which bin it’s being thrown in, TMI. Also didn’t need a day to day outfit description, this wasn’t clueless. I was getting a little tired about 80% in and started skipping to dialogue only because it was feeling a little dragged out.
I feel like if this book had been 100 pages less and ended on the cliffhanger I would have upped the stars and been a little more excited for book 2
I’m not racing out for the 2nd but I will probably pick it up if I see it when it’s released
The book starts with Eerie and Mystic finding our both sets of their parents have been killed in a car accident. Which leads Eerie moving from the home she has always known in with Mystic and his wife CeCe in Darkwall less than 2 months after the passing of their parents.
Eerie is almost 18 and finishing her senior year of high school. Day one - she pisses off the popular drop dead guy and ends up in a parking war that his 2 best friends want her to squash him in. Over the course of the next few weeks till Erie’s birthday she learns not all is right in Darkwelk and things aren’t what they seem, or she is going crazy. One of the two.
This book is slower, but the character development is amazing and I couldn’t put it down. We learn more about a majority of the main players in the story, but we are left a major cliff hangers and I’m salivating waiting for book 2.
Our FMC has a mouth on her and doesn’t back down - considering all she has been through in the past few months - Eerie is amazing. The story between her and the guys is slow, but the se xual tension is there.
This book is so nostalgically wattpad-esque. While the FMC gives very "y/n" vibes, the relationship between her and her reverse harem boys is so addicting. At first I cringed at the immaturity of the FMC until I remembered she's a 17-almost-18 year old. The writing pretty accurately and brilliantly captures the general vibes of a typically atypical teenage girl. I also appreciated the friendship between Eerie and Naya. I go in most y/a books expecting the best friend to be less than the MC but I actually loved that Eerie adored and hyped up the awesomeness of Naya constantly. My biggest complaint is that there was just a little too much filler that instead could've been a better fleshing out of FMC and the MMCs blooming relationships, but I'll be damned if it didn't leave me excited to read the next book.

I thought the storyline was interesting and original. Full of secrets, this book will definitely keep you wondering throughout. Searching for answers. Rest assured, we do get some. There was of course, vampires, mystery, humor and just little spice. I'm hoping we'll get more in the next book. I enjoyed the pranking between Dion and Eerie. I thought it brought out a lot of humor. I do wish it could have been shortened a bit though. It seemed like that was a big portion of the book. I loved the banter between the guys. It was also good to see the relationships between Eerie and the guys grow. Overall, I thought it was a great read!! I look forward to book 2 because after that cliffhanger, I need to know what happens next!!
I really enjoyed Crush and this new world that JJ Dean has created! While it does have a bit of a slow start, this book has so much character development and has time for smaller moments between characters that I really enjoyed. I loved Eerie’s interactions and all of the banter with the guys. I liked that Eerie’s relationships with each of the guys seemed to develop naturally and each at their own pace. Plus the Twilight references had me laughing out loud. Crush was such a great start to this series, that now I’m going to be waiting eagerly for book 2!
This was a good story, but so slow. The book probably could have been cut in half to be honest. The h was extremely frustrating how she kept avoiding everyone and everything that had to do with her. She was super sick and she knew her cousin was keeping secrets about her but never confronted him or asked for help? Then when these secrets come out she seemed more upset that the 3 guys she had only just met were keeping them as well. It was frustrating to read sometimes, but I still enjoyed the plot.
This book had me interested from page one and kept my interest all the way through, I kept trying to put it down and found it difficult so not much adulting went on!
I love the dynamic between our fiesty heroine and the guys, especially Dion! Made me laugh made me feel and most of all lady me wanting the next book ASAP! Great read well written absolutely loved it
This one took a while to get into the action and it did pick up…but I still ended up skipping ahead to parts that held my interest. Love the dynamics between the characters, the supernatural species/ elements and OF COURSE, the vamps.
All I’m saying; if you picked up the book and read “sexual content” in the warnings, it has it but it’s a LONG way off. Definitely was worth skipping to though so, it’s all about your perspective
Seriously I had been (Im)patiently waiting for this book to come out and it was amazing!!! BUT I was not expecting it to end on a cliffhanger! I hate starting books that end on a cliffhanger and don’t have a second book even in the process of being near release! So beware…amazing book but you will not get any answers until the next book comes out
This book had me like wondering the whole way through. The secrets, The world building was nothing less than amazeballs. Which really makes sense since JJ is the author. It was a great start to a new series. But that Cliffy at the end about killed me. Now the waiting process begins. Can’t wait till I get my hands on it.
This was such a great dark paranormal romance book, I couldn't put it down. I had a feeling it would end in a cliffhanger, but I had no idea this book just came out two months ago!! There's no second book out yet and I was devastated. Will definitely be on the lookout for the continuation of the second book, hopefully soon (cross fingers)
Fantastic book!!! I’m going to have such a book hangover!!!!! These characters are absolutely wonderful!! Eerie is one bada** FMC and I just love her! Her guys are everything (yes even Dion😂)! I can’t wait to read the next book!!!!
Loved it so much I have got to order book #2 asap. I love all the characters. I love how JJ has each one in their position. I love the mixture of fantasy and “truth”…Eerie is the perfect heroine full of such angst. Definitely would recommend this to others.
I love this book its a must read IV been getting more and more on the edge of my seat it's funny , sad in places ,.but a real gripper of a story now I just need the next installment like NOW !!
This book was pretty slow to pick up, but overall I really enjoyed the character development Initially I thought it would be very much like Twilight and I was getting ready to throw in the towel, but I’m glad I stuck with it. Really enjoyed!
Love love love love love!!!!! So good. I love a good vampire book and this was it. I love Eerie. I actually love the names the moat in this one. I can't wait foe more
