When a butterfly is trapped in a deserted building it starts a chain of events, over the course of one day, that will change people's lives . . . and end people's lives.
From the runaway in downtown Sydney to the backpacker in South America . . . the pyrotechnics expert to the violent African rebel . . . the chaos knows no bounds.
I really enjoyed Mortal Chaos when I read it a couple of years ago but for some reason I never quite got around to reading the sequels. Deep Oblivion popped back up on my radar a few weeks ago and I immediately ordered a copy and as it turns out I ended up enjoying it even more than the previous book. Although there are three books in this series the titles are linked more by the style in which they are written than anything else, there is no cross over of characters so it would be very easy to read the books in any order.
The premise behind these books is the Butterfly Effect, the books are all incredibly pacey reads written in short 1-2 page chapters and have a large cast of characters. You might think that would make things confusing for readers but I find it incredibly easy to keep track of who everyone is and what is going on with them. The hardest thing about these books is making yourself put them down once you've started reading them!
Have you ever wondered how a butterfly trapped in a high rise building in Australia could effect a backpacker in Brazil, a missionary worker in Liberia, a monk in Myanmar and a cruise ship? In Deep Oblivion Matt Dickinson manages to make connections between very different people who are all over the world, sometimes it is easy to see how their lives entwine but other times the connections are much more subtle and take a while to be fully revealed. I love the way the author constantly manages to surprise you, he'll build things up so you are expecting one outcome and then at the last minute throw something at you completely out of the blue.
It's obvious from the tag line "Some will live. Many will die. All are connected." that not all of the characters are going to make it to the end of the book but I guarantee that you won't guess what happens to most of them! Deep Oblivion is a fast paced, action packed story that I devoured in one sitting, the story is intense, edge of your seat reading and I can't recommend it highly enough.
A good book with an exciting plot, but might be hard to follow because of the layout (constantly switching between different plots) although they come together at the end.
This book is good. But no improvement since the last book. Yes, the events are completely different and yes, the characters are completely different, but after reading the first book, this book didn't surprise me when events affected each other. Maybe I was expecting too much, but it didn't excite me as much as the first book. In conclusion, it is a pretty standard book. A good standard book, but standard nonetheless
So this is the second book in the mortal chaos series, and it has to be said... its pretty much the exactly the same as the first. Meaning the story premise is exactly the same, chaos theory, the writing style and pace is the same... everything but the characters and the plot are different. Which means you DONT need to read the opening novel to read this one. Which is new... for me...
I feel having read the first book to compare with... this book is slighty better... I enjoyed it more, while it lasted. Then I hated it... then I forgot all about it.
In the last review I complained about how I didn't connect with any of the characters, in this book, the same can't be said. I'm not going to name names, (for spoiler reasons) but I find many questions unanswered in this novel. This particular characters life changed dramatically during the course of this story, but what happens next? What did she do with the item she acquired? Who knows?...
All in all I think its alright... for the target audience... if ya like books and have nothing better to do...READ THE HUNGER GAMES!!! Enough said...
What!! I don't even know this is a second book in a series. And still I gave it 3 stars? Whoa, okay. Let's cope with this. I think this book is super fast-paced and interesting. I honestly read it in 24 hours. However, the cast of characters was not developed to the extent I find satisfactory. Toward the end of the book, I felt like I did not get the message I was looking for throughout the story line.
Originaltitel: Speed Freaks
I appreciate the cover blurb and title give a head's up that most of the characters you're reading about will eventually die, but I found that, once the mass catastrophies started, I just didn't care. I'd become annoyed at the very short flitting between characters by that point. I realise that short scenes and cliff-hangers are good at creating tension, and too it was a technique to emphasise that all these stories were happening at once, but I felt the barely-one-page-long chapters for the main bulk of the second half were too short to be warranted. We could easily have heard three pages of each character without the need to leave them and flit to someone else. To highlight my point: there were 203 chapters for a 300-page story. I think the imprending deaths, told in gruesome detail when they happen, along with massive explosions etc make this a story generally aimed at young boys. I picked it up as an audio book thinking it sounded interesting. The reviews on goodreads say the first in the series was much better. I'm not sure if I'll give it a try.
First of all; not as impressive as the first one. Seriously anyone who hasn't read that one read it now! The last one each chapter followed on from the last one, each story linked to one giant catastrophe which unlike this one you totally didn't see coming because it wasn't mentioned at the start. However this one was good, i am going to complain about the writing on the cover though, it's a bad representation of the book; Some will live Many will die All are connected
I mean hello? Spoiler alert!
Overall, the book had interesting characters in interesting situations. But for me having read the first one I was a little dissapointed and I just didn't feel like it was as intricately woven and linked. Which is what the first one did so well.
Oh and I forgot to mention that the ending was so incredibly predictable... It's a shame really!
Another good book but not as good as the first. The plot of this one does become a little far fetched at the end with the links and deaths. there were a couple of more graphic descriptions in this book too, but they were so brief and unexpected it was almost out of place. It is definately filled with more drama than book one but I fell one or 2 bits of e story got a bit lost as there was almost too much going on. Still a great read though and I will read the third book. They are such easy books to pick up and plough through in a couple of ours. The short chapters make me constantly think 'just one more...' So I get through them in no time.
I really enjoyed this second Mortal Chaos, both books begin with a butterfly and the effects are far reaching and interwoven strands of the resulting chaos. The chapters are very short and the action flies to different people around the world who have all been influenced by the one action. I loved the characters and raced through to find out who was going to survive. Some of the ending was a little predictable but that didn't make it any less enjoyable for me. If you're looking for an excitable, action packed, quick read, you can't go wrong with Mortal Chaos.
Totally brilliant. A tale of chaos born from one tiny accident; some results are good and some are sad just as in life! So good in fact that despite the fact that I finished it on Friday, I am still thinking about it on SUNDAY. full Marks to Matt Dickinson and heartfelt thanks for such a great book.
Deep Oblivion is a book which contains group of events written intellegenty with a merger point. It makes us think the possibilities while we reading. I imagined lots of different ending while I am on early pages and I countunied till the book really ends. So if you love the books which make you think this book is for you.
