I grew up, the youngest of six children, in southern Maine. As a child, I constantly made up stories that entertained my family. As I grew up, I never grew out of my imagination or my fondness for story-telling. Even in school, I wrote a lot of stories, but I never had the nerve to show anyone. I eventually went on to college and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2006. Today I'm back in Maine, living near Portland. Golden by Monika Pardon

Rating 5*****

This book was provided free from the author in exchange for honest literary review.

Sonora has been living a nightmare since she was ten years old. Watching her parents brutally murdered in front of her started a downward spiral of events in her life. Now just over seven years later, she is again burying her caretaker and beloved grandmother Lenore. Little did she know that from here on out her life would be anything but normal.
Thrown in a series of events straight out of childhood fables, Sonora is thrust into the world of fae and shifters. Everyone around her seems to want Sonora dead, and the number of people she can trust is almost zero. What a way to spend your days before your eighteenth birthday.
I love this story. Not only is Sonora courageous and brave, but she is wise beyond her years. When other girls would have caved in and just fave up, she presses on so that her loved ones didn't die in vain. Her life turns into a non-stop thrill ride which her life depends on. She is one of the best characters I have seen in a while.
The hint of forbidden love is also a great draw for me. I always root for the underdog so I was happy to see that she chose her own path. Straying from what others want for you as a teen is exceedingly difficult, and the author really nailed this concept home. I have to say that the imagery was beautifully written, and it places the reader in the scenes. The plot itself actually is excellently developed, and the author wraps up the novel well with a hint of what is to come. I was very surprised to see that this was a debut novel by this author as she comes across as a seasoned pro. I have very high expectations as to where this story will go in the next installment.

What a great story! I was hooked in the first chapter. Monika Pardon adds a nice twist to an old fairytale. Not only that, but it's not just about Goldilocks and the three bears. It's that and so very much more. This book has the paranormal twist we all crave so much these days.

Sonora, the main character, has had so much upheaval and loss in the last few years that the reader can't help but feel bad for her. And the hits just keep on coming when she's placed with her cold-hearted Aunt Liz after the death of her grandmother.... the last relative who cared for her. Now things are about to get really weird for her, after she's attacked by three bears and thrown into a world she knows nothing about, let alone even knew existed.

A thrill ride that the reader can't put down til the end for the need to know what happens to Sonora and and her new-found friend, and possibly love, Luke. Will Sonora survive in this crazy realm? Will she be killed, therefore opening up the world to all evil? Is there anyone around her who is what they seem, not something paranormal? Guess you'll have to read on to find out!

Golden is a modern day spin on a classic tale Goldilocks and the three bears. Pardon takes a unique twist with adding in shifters and fae and we can't forget the part where there are those out for her death.

You get pulled along with Sonora into a new world and have to guard yourself so you don't trust the wrong people. Only how do you truly know who is evil and who is forced to act against their own will?

Definitely action packed and worth taking the adventure!

I am a super fan of fractured fairytales.. Or retellings.. as I like to call them.. A few months ago I was given this ebook for review.. and I sat and sat on it.. I did eventually purchase it from amazon.. I cant pass up a sale what can I say.. I have a thing for covers..

I have a slight obsession with reading the Acknowledgments.. and dedications.. I guess mainly because its one of my greatest desires to see my name there.. now I know thats unlikely to happen unless my daughter decides she wants to publish her childrens book based on me as an owl.. she knows the way to my heart.. anyways as per usual im getting sidetracked here. I find Acknowledgments and Dedications give me a huge insight to the author.. often times more then the About the Author portion of the book.. Golden was inspired by Pardon listening to her mother read the story of Goldilocks and the three bears to her son while she braided her own daughters hair... proof that inspiration can come with reading.. I often hear that tidbit of advice from other published authors read read read.. this bit of advice scares me id be too afraid of accidently plagiarizing..

Sooo.. Golden is a wonderful twist to the childrens story.. Imaginative and addicting.. Golden not only met my expectations but exceeded them.. We follow Sonora after the death of her Grandmother she is sent to live with her Aunt Liz and Cousin Ramona .. both totally evil.. treated like a second rate citizen Sonora cant wait the 2 more years till shes 18 and out the door.. In the meantime she will deal.. and deal she does when Evil Aunt Liz and her new boyfriend Luke that the girls up to his cabin in the woods.. Aunt Liz shoos the girls for a date night with Luke.. Ramona talks Sonora into taking a walk in the woods.. soon they are lost and stumble upon a cabin.. scared cold and tired the girls enter the cabin.. and do the things Goldilocks did.. And like Goldilocks she was interrupted by 3 huge bears.. and fatally wounded.. only she didnt die.. she shouldve by laws of nature she should be dead.. this should be the end of the story but its not.. its only the beginning..

Golden is a whirlwind of revelations and twists on what you thought you knew about the three bears.. Pardon masterfully combined several supernatural species weve got shapeshifters.. fae.. oracles.. and a completely different realm.. All of which I wasnt expecting when I pick this up.. I'm so upset with myself for holding onto golden as long as I have.. Do yourself a favor and dont put this one off!

When Sonora’s Grandmother died her Aunt Liz and cousin Ramona moved into the house to take care of her. Liz was not happy because her mother had left the house and money to Sonora so she had no choice but to take care of the girl until she turned 21. During a summer trip to a cabin in the woods Sonora and her cousin were injured in a bear attack and some very strange things began to happen. Sonora’s body started to heal very quickly, Liz’s true personality was showing through and Sonora didn’t feel she could trust the people around her.

The story was a little slow to start, I was over a third of the way through the book and still didn’t know where it was going. I was beginning to think that perhaps the Goldilocks and the three bears connection was going to be the only point in the plot! Mundane things were happening and there were the odd clues to hint that something bigger was going on but nothing concrete had materialised and the story began to drag for me. By the time I got to the half way mark all had been explained (it was more than just a rehashed fairytale!) and the pace picked up so I was able to get back into the groove!

For a debut novel this is a great book, there were some interesting characters and a very unusual storyline. I enjoyed the different take on the fairytales and the inclusion of shape-shifters and other magical beings. The prose was sometimes a little mixed up and confusing as if the writer was unsure if she was telling us the story as it happened or after the fact and I did notice a few incorrect words i.e. corporation instead of co-operation and hurdled in stead of hurtled but these errors were easy to read over and understand what she had meant to say. We are left with an ending that is open for more stories in a series I will be sure to watch out for.

Ever wondered what happened to Goldilocks after her run-in with the bears? Then look no further! This is a most exciting and fast paced YA book, loosely based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but this book is certainly no fairy tale! I loved it!

The cast of characters are so strong, that it seems like they could walk out of the book and into the room.
Sonora Martin is a feisty blonde haired seventeen year old. Coming face to face with bears is enough to frighten anyone, but Sonora has courage in bucket loads! She has dealt with a lot in her short life, but nothing prepares her for what is to come.
Luke is a charismatic character, full of secrets, but he is conflicted between what he wants and what others demand of him. I could easily fall for him myself! His brother isn't bad either! It doesn't hurt that they are shape shifters too!
There are some characters I love to hate, and that includes Sonora's Aunt and cousin. They, along with some really creepy bad guys, are not exactly the nicest of people!

One thing I loved about this story is that the author cleverly kept me guessing, with lots of twists, turns and unexpected events. At one point, I wasn't even sure who was on which side! The action was intense, and left me feeling breathless! I loved the interaction between Sonora and Luke. They are both stubborn, and tend to set each other off.
The epilogue was extremely chilling, and made me impatient to read the next book in the series.
This book is Monika Pardon's first YA novel, and from what I read, this series is going to be fantastic!
I highly recommend this YA paranormal romance novel if you are looking for a shape shifting tale that takes a fairy tale and stands it on it's head!

Can I just say holy moly friholy!!! I loved this book!!! It is a fantastical adventure that left me wanting more. This is a modern twist rendition of the classical fairytale. I'm enamored by how well written the story, plot, and ending are. I just love the characters, especially Luke and Sonora. This is the first book I have read by this author and it sure as heck won't be the last!!!!! I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series!! This is a fast paced read into what happens after Goldilocks meets the 3 bears. This story held all the keys for an intriguing breathtaking ride such as action, suspense, twists and turns, and conspiracies!!

Sonora is haunted with seeing the deaths of her mother and father. She is living with Lenore or Memere as she calls her. Her grandmother Lenore dies and Sonora is forced to live with her horrible Aunt Liz and Ramona. Sonora is a feisty headed blonde that is not afraid to sass someone. The only reason living with her aunt and cousin are bearable is due to Luke coming and living with them. There is something about Luke that sets her on edge and yet is comfortable at the same time. When Ramona leads her blind to a cottage in the woods, they get attacked by 3 ferocious mutant size bears. Sonora is then plunged into a world she knows nothing about and has to buck up to hold it together. There are many people out for her blood and to kill her. Will she find allies? Will she escape alive? Who and why is everyone starting to act strangely? I give this a 5 star review and it has become one of my favorite YA read!!!

With her long golden hair and tragic run-in with three impossibly large bears in a remote cabin, seventeen-year-old Sonora Martin is a modern day Goldilocks. Yet her life is no happy, romantic fairy tale. Instead she finds herself thrust into a dark magical world of the fae and shape shifters and questions who she can trust.

Sonora hasn’t had it easy, first her parents are killed then her grand-mother dies, leaving her in her evil aunt’s care. She feels alone, and things just seem to be getting worse. Only her friends and her aunt’s boyfriend are there for her, but after fighting off bears in a cabin in the woods, things will never be the same again. Her awakening is kick started during the fight, and she slowly learns of her true heritage.

A modern day fairy-tale with a twist, this book slowly sets the scene and building the suspense. Incredibly well written, the author has built on the popular children’s story and made it so much more. Once the action starts, it continues to be fast paced and lets your imagination transport you into their world. The characters develop significantly as the book continues, giving the reader insight into their back stories and what has made them how they are today. With many twists and turns, this book keeps you guessing, and will have you completely gripped until the end.

There is much more to come from this story, and the adventure seems to be only just beginning.

Well that's a lie, I actually won this book, but my review will still be honest.
This is the debut novel by Monika Pardon and was it ever the debut. Before I read th book I didn't really know what it was about, I hadn't read the synopsis, but I was pleasantly surprised. At first, I was thinking yes, it's a modern re- telling of Goldilocks and the three bears but it's so much more! It turns into a very literal fairy tale.
The books main character Sonora (I have no idea how to pronounce this name, hopefully just like its spelt) is awesome. First she saves her cousin from ragging bears and it only gets better from there. Sonora soon realizes that her ice is not what it's seems. Then there are the hot Farr twins who you don't really know what dpside they are one, or if they are evn on the same sides to other very end of the book. There are a ton of other great charters involved wheter good, bad or ugly. There are evn a few tricksters in there making you believe one thing but being something totally different in the end.
Overall this was a pretty good book. At one point in the book I felt like the book hound have either been about Goldilocks or Fae, not both. I got over this fairly quickly. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fairly tales or if you are looking for a lite read.
Thanks Monika for the donation that lead me to this awesome read.

This ebook of Golden by Monika Pardon and Melissa Ringsted was given to me for a honest review:

Golden started out really slow for me, but I kept on reading. Authors work really hard putting their talent out there for us to enjoy. Even if I thought the beginning was slow for me, others might find the story very interesting. As I continued to read, I started to understand the point of the beginning chapters. Plus my favorite part was the shape-shifters. They're bears instead of wolves, now don't get me wrong,I love wolves, but sometimes you just feel like a bear. The young lady in this story was lost in the world around her. She didn't know who to turn to for comfort as her family members were killed one by one. Sonora didn't know her family was hiding a secret. A secret about her future, if in the wrong hands, could get her killed. The people she knew as friends have turned against her. They're trying to hunt her down and drain Sonora of her blood. But what they don't know is that she is more useful alive then dead. She finds out she is from a very powerful family line. Sonora, has no clue why they are after her and what they want that she has. All the confusion around her, Sonora becomes friends with two bear/human shape-shifters. She's starting to have strong feelings for the one that might have to harm her. That's when the battle begins!

Thank you to The Anchor Group for giving me the chance to read and review!

Sonora has had a lot to deal with in her life, watching her parents die and recently her grandmother. Now she lives with her wicked Aunt who is less than happy that she has to deal with her. The only thing keeping her sane, are her friends and Luke who is her Aunt’s reluctant boyfriend.

One day trying to find shelter from torrential rain, she and her cousin find themselves in a small cabin. Suddenly they are attacked by bears, they both survive but it wakens something inside Sonora that leads her down a path of family secrets and deadly vengeance.

With everything Sonora has been through it’s nice to see her as a strong character, ready to fight anything that is thrown her way but still we get to see her softer side as the story continues. Luke’s character is also interesting as we watch his conflicted feelings over what he wants to do and what others demand from him. They work well together, both being tough, strong characters. As we follow them and she starts to discover about her blood line and the search for the codex, I must admit it reminded me of the holy grail and the theory of Jesus having family but it didn’t distract me from the book.
The story builds up well, we get a sense of something not right and it slowly opens up into Shadow Realms and fae. This is a well paced piece of writing and a good start to the series. Monika builds up the suspense well and pulls the plot together nicely.

After the sudden death of her grandmother, Sonora is forced to live with an aunt that she barely knows, her cousin, and Luke, her aunt's reluctant boyfriend. A fight with her aunt sends Sonora running into the woods where she inadvertently learns a web of family secrets and of a startling pact for revenge with her as the target. Now with the help of a pair of unlikely allies Sonora must travel to the Shadow Realm in search of a way to survive.

For me this book was a slow starter, it really took a while for me to get into the story. I struggled to read and comprehend what was going on with even the slightest of background noise so in the end I hid myself away in the bedroom. In the beginning there really isn't a lot of information given about the character and her back ground, we get sketchy bits of info and some of it can be confusing (I know others talk of using 'cheat sheets' until the info sticks but I mentally gag at the idea) which resulted in me re-reading certain bits over and over. Soon enough we get enough information for things to start making sense and from here on in the story flows quite naturally.

I might have found the story slow and confusing to start, but it soon redeems itself and I found it enjoyable and engaging. I will definitely be looking for the next instalment.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I grew up reading the story of Goldilocks and the 3 bears, and when this book came along, I thought "ooh, grown up version, yay!". But this is not your typical fairy tale! There are so many twists and turns, that this book will keep you on your toes the entire way through! I had a hard time putting this book down, and carried my kindle everywhere I went, even if to sneak in a few pages in between tasks. I just *had* to know what was going to happen to next. And just when I thought I knew who was who, and who you could trust, the author threw in some twists, and left me doubting what I thought I knew all along.

It is easy to fall in love with the main character, Sonora, and sympathize with her and her current situation. Her grandmother just passed away, and she has to know live with her aunt and cousin, who want absolutely nothing to do with her.

The ending leaves you wanting more, and definitely leaves it open for a sequel. I personally hope there is a sequel, as well as a novella or two from other characters point of views, to help fill in some of the gaps.

You will not be disappointed with "Golden". Well done, Monika Pardon, well done!

What a absolute fabulous read! Wow now this is a great version of Goldilocks.

Sonora's grandmother just passed away. Her only relatives is her evil aunt and niece that combined becomes the evil two. Upon an order from her evil aunt her niece leads her into the woods to a cabin, here she faces off with three bears, and one succeeds to kill Sonora, but instead of dying she is reborn. She finds her old friends odd and out of place an soon a lot of them are trying to kill her. Then she start's to notice that strange things is happening to her, like healing really fast.

With the help of two brothers, they protect and guide Sonora into the other world she was meant for. She has to run from old friends, decide who to trust with new ones, and find a book to save both worlds. But with Luke at her side she quickly finds her way, and soon finds the real evil ones.

This was such an epic read. I just loved this version of Goldilocks and the three bears, and of course one bear turns out to be a hot guy protecting and helping Sonora. It's pack with action scenes and keeps you glued to your seat devouring each page as quickly as you can. I highly recommend this to all.

I was excited when this book was chosen as the monthly read for one of my book clubs, because I had already purchased it. My TBR pile is ginormous, so this allowed me to bump it to the top. I read it in parts, because I had to get other book reviews done around it. That made me have to backtrack here and there to keep the story straight.

I felt the relationship to the Goldilocks fairytale early on, as the girl with the golden hair entered into a home that was theoretically inhabited by three bears. Unlike most retellings of this story, though, these bears are on a mission to kill the fair maiden. And then the story falls far away from the fairytale, as it enters a world of fae and shifters.

I had to pay close attention to each of the characters to keep them straight. Those who seems to be good may actually be evil. Some of the evil ones are acting against their will, and are actually one of the good guys. You feel Sonora's confusion as she tries to figure out who she really is, and whom she can trust. The book comes to a satisfactory close, yet leaves the story wide open for a sequel. It's a fun start to a new young adult series that fans of shifters and fae will enjoy.

First, let me say that I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review. And I honestly liked it. The concept was unique and very interesting. I like that Monika Pardon took a familiar story and explored it and twisted it into something new and original.

The main character, Sonora is a strong female heroine and she is definitely relatable. The character is very fiesty and her reactions to situations are realistic. Luke is the perfect counterpart to her and I really enjoyed the way that they interacted throughout the book.

There were a lot of secondary characters introduced n a short time span and it was a little overwhelming and confusing. I found myself mixing up characters and having to go back to double-check who was who. And I think that some of these secondary characters could have been developed a little more.

Overall, I loved the book and I'm hoping that Monika Pardon will be continuing the story in another book...and maybe giving us some novellas to develop backstory on the secondary characters.

Wow what a crazy fresh spin on the old tale. I really enjoyed it and found myself drawn into the story. This book was a fun read, it is not everyday a childhood classic is told again with adult take...great!
We have shape shifters, Fae and of course evil...haha! Our Goldilocks in this story is Sonora Martin, she is one brave girl. I think everyone was out to get her! She has dealt with more in her seventeen years of life than needed. Is she ready though for what comes next? Now let’s talk Luke...I was back and forth on him for a bit and then I decided yep I would fall for him, hook line and sinker! Add in the shape shifter part and boom I am done. We have it all here, characters you love to hate (Her AUNT) and just bad guys all the way around. It is a fun filled ride from beginning to end. This story is action packed to the max. Beautifully written and the story flows nicely. I was guessing to the very end of this one and I am waiting to see what Monika comes up with next. I am now a fan!

I was very confused by how much people loved this book. Don't get me wrong, I loved it too, but there was a serious issue with it. THE PLOT! I did not understand the plot one bit. The politics were so over complicated and not explained very well, and suddenly there will be new characters and plot progressions and our main character, Sonora, suddenly knows all of it. All of it! Like, how do you know who Nathan is? How do you know Sean's under Sam's control? She just knows, and we don't, and this leads to major confusion...However, I still loved this book. The characters were AWESOME!!! Sonora? She's wicked, totally cool, really relaxed, and doesn't take shit from anyone. I loved her! And the romance with Luke was the sweetest! It actually took some time to develop, and they're so cute together! Plus, there was no love-triangle. I totally thought I saw one coming, but it never did to my relief. In the end I really enjoyed this book and its such a fun read, the plot is just really REALLY confusing...(but it can easily be over looked and doesn't take away from the story)!❤️

I was given this book in return for an honest review. Sonora's beloved grandma is dead and now she has to go live with her horrible aunt and cousin. Through a series of aweful events Sonora learns that the realm she lives in, isn't the only one that exists and that she is a target. She has been betrayed by those that were supposed to be friends and family and isn't sure who to trust. A modern day fairy tale, like Goldilocks, she has a confrontation with 3 bears, or are they? Stubborn as she is, she has to trust someone and that is Luke, her aunts boyfriend, and Ian, a mysteious young teacher at her school. They have a connection not only to her, but to each other. She will have to be very careful though, because one of them has a tie to the other team that could get her killed. I thought this was a neat story, I loved the characters and all the supernatural creatures, This book is a great read for Young adults as well as adults. WaAr

Until one everything changes drastically and everything she knew, changes once again in a way she never expects. Of course she has Luke who helps her on her incredible journey to find what what she looking for.
What can I say about this book except that is was AMAZING! It had a super interesting story line, I have never read a story that had this unique take on goldilocks. I truly loved it and can't wait for the next book to find out more about these characters.
I have this book five stars because it was what it deserved, the author kept me entertained with this her unique story, with action and twist and turns.

This is a "fractured fairytale" modeled after Goldilocks and the Three Bears. But this version has a paranormal twist that will keep you entertained throughout the novel.

I have to admit, I was a little confused after the first few chapters, because of all the new characters that got introduced. It was a little hard keeping up with all of them. However, I eventually kept it all straight, and I really enjoyed the story. I used to wonder what happened to Goldilocks after she left the three bears' home, and now I know! Plus, with the epilogue leaving it open for another book based on what Sam finds, I look forward to seeing what happens next in the story.

When I first chose to read Golden I thought that it would be a twisted version of the original Goldilocks and the Three Bears but it is more than that. This is a story that takes the original fairy tale and brings it into the 21st century. A paranormal fairy tale.
One of the things that really struck me was the strength of the heroine, Senora. There are five older teenage young ladies in my life that are all strong in their own right, I like that they have a character that they can relate to.
I really liked this book though I did have a little problem tracking some of the characters. I am looking forward to a sequel but I would also like the back story that tells us more about Senora's parents.

I must say this book is totally something I was not expecting! Sonora is the lead character in Golden and she soon learns that she is a part of something HUGE! When her Grandmother passes away her aunt gets custody and she is only taking Sonora in because of a her mothers will... so you are lead to believe...... this story is a modern twist on an old tale and I like this version better. In golden people are not who they seem to be as you will find out the further you read. things will get tricky for Sonora really fast and she will need to decide who to trust and who not to trust REALLY quick. This book is rather fast paced to read your always reading just a little more before you put it down.... if you can put it down. I really want to see what happens next.

While this story had a creative twist to the fairytale of Goldilocks, I had a hard time following it. The first several chapters didn't really have a time frame, which distracted me from what exposition was offered. The characters took too long to develop too, which made me come up with my own characterizations that were probably a lot less favorable than the author intended. Whereas other reviewers found the book engaging after the half-way point, I couldn't get over the poor beginning. I probably would have liked it a lot better if the characters had been explained earlier on though, and other reviewers seem to have enjoyed it, so you may like it better than I did.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really good book with very interesting characters. It starts with a girl Sonora who is 17 years old. Her parents have died and recently her grandmother died. She goes to live with her evil Aunt Liz and her evil cousin. Just a few weeks in and things in her life start drastically changing. Sonora learns about a new world she is a part of and people are out to get her blood, dead or alive. I really got sucked into this book toward the middle of it. The characters where well developed in that part if the book and the story was easy to follow. I can't wait to read the next book in this series! Very intriguing!

Suspenseful! Intriguing, and dramatic!
Sonora is not your typical moody teenager, as she has been through much more than she should have to at her young age. Yet through her trials, her personality is very real, and genuine and we feel her pain, and her fear, as well as her joys as we discover and travel the strange path she has taken in the last few months after the death of her grandmother. Finding out who she can and can’t trust, Sonora is a true heroine.
The author does a terrific job of keeping up the pace and always drawing you in. We feel what Sonora feels, and Ms. Pardon maintains the suspense all the way through.
Great Job!

We've all heard the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but it is the modern day spin on that classic tale that makes this book so unique. We thought we knew Goldilocks, turns out we had no idea! Pardon creates a new world for us to get lost in right along with the main character Sonora (aka Goldilocks.) What follows is a mystical tale of shapeshifters, Fae, and an evil plot for revenge with Sonora as the target. Do not miss out on this action packed adventure!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I had never really been a fan of the Goldilocks fairytale, I'm definitely a fan now. She really made the story come to life for me, especially since I grew up in Maine and know most of the places named. It feels like I've been where these characters were. It's a good, clean, fun action packed story that keeps you on your toes, wondering what's coming next. I love how she ended the first book. You are left craving more.

I loved the new outlook on the Goldilocks story. The author did a great job keeping my attention throughout the whole book. You will meet characters that you will fall in love with and some you will just hate. You wll discover different turns and twists through the story and and when you get to the end you will wish you had the second one already. It was awesome. I recommend this book to everyone. I wont disclose any spoilers because OMG you need to read it :)
