[Siren Classic Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, M/M, shape-shifters, public exhibition, HEA] What happens at the UPAC conference if the guests don’t drink the bespelled toast? The elders thought up a backup plan…They can’t leave without a mating seal. Fabian Norris snuck away from his overbearing aunt to have a little fun and meet some new people. When he sees an attractive smaller man, he worries someone might take advantage of him in all the chaos, and his protective instincts take over. Magnus Duffy has a hatred of ogres that affects his very soul. Can these two men overcome something so dire that UPAC steps in to dissolve their mating? Or will they fight like they’ve never had to for the one they want? ** A Siren Erotic Romance
I was a bit disappointed with this book for a couple of reasons:
1) Fabian backhanded Magnus when Magnus was confronting Jean. It was an accident in the heat of the moment that the author kind of downplayed by having Magnus forgive Fabian immediately after it happened even though Magnus was scared for his life. Okay, some people will probably go on the offensive about this being one reaction that can occur in reality but for me it just felt like Joyee Flynn was telling the abused to forgive their abusers when they apologized. The same scenario happens in reality everyday to someone and their abusers do apologize but in the end the abused continues to be abused even if their spouse or son or daughter or just a bully from school apologizes for the behavior. I also felt like the abuse of Magnus was downplayed because the author made Fabian seem like a naive individual who is socially stunted.
2) I found that Magnus and Fabian's character development wasn't consistent. Magnus was pretty outgoing and aggressive in the beginning and while reading the story it just felt like he was becoming a lot more docile. I liked that he was willing to protect Fabian and that he could wield a gun if he needed to. Fabian was the total opposite of Magnus in the beginning and he became pretty aggressive and dominant at times in the book but then would go back to being shy with low self-esteem.
3) The issue on children between Fabian and Magnus was a bit annoying and kind of bored me a little. They kept going back and forth on it and in the end I just felt like Fabian didn't want children and was just going with the flow of things.
4) In general I just felt that this book wasn't as good as the other books in the series. How can this be when Stormy Glenn, Joyee Flynn and Gabrielle Evan each wrote about 5-6 books each for the series??? I just didn't get the wow, cool or omg factor I had in the other books. It could have been my mindset when I was reading this book that effected my opinion of the book. I may have to read it over in the future...until then the rating of this book will be 2 stars for me.
What made this volume fun to read for me was yet another unusual pairing that came out of the elders' idiotic idea to force all paranormals to mate outside their species. In this case it actually works against them since one of them is endangered and needs to mate inside their species so they can repopulate (or so the elders have decreed). But, I'm jumping ahead. So, we have a bird of paradise and an ogre here, and as if that difference isn't significant enough, they also each carry a dark secret which makes it sound almost impossible that they'd ever get along.
Fabian is an ogre, and he falls for Magnus on sight. He is very protective, but can't believe Magnus is really interested in him. Especially when Magnus reveals he hates ogres... So, of course, Fabian lies and gets into even more trouble.
Magnus is a rare bird of paradise and has a very dark secret linked to ogres in his background. The revelation of Fabian;s species always drives them apart, and that is only the beginning.
Add a somewhat mysterious aunt, an old boyfriend of Magnus's and the overbearing attitude of the meddling elders, and you can see why the resulting ride might be a little rough. If you like unusual shifter stories with a dark secret, if a "nesting" male bird mate sounds interesting, and if you have enjoyed the other books in this series, then you may like this one as well.
Oh my god how could you not love Fabian. Big, gentle, bumbling, klutz with a ton of issues that he just unloads on Magnus right off the bat. He's adorable and made me think of Shrek. Yes, I went there.......sue me!
Oh, these two are so cute and have such a crazy intertwined history that they are completely ignorant of when they mate. They are wonderful together and so sweet when they work out their difficulties.
My review is in spoiler tags because it is merely my raw notes which haven't been edited. I do most of my note taking on my phone which makes for some creative wording due to the spellchecker and my fat fingers and impatience. This review probable has too much negative stuff as that's what I tend to get riled up about enough to stop reading and jot down. If I'm enjoying myself, I don't want to stop reading!
If there are any real spoilers, I put them in nested spoiler tags, so don't worry about that.
This was book 16 in the "Midnight Matings" series. Fabian Norris snuck away from his overbearing aunt to have a little fun and meet some new people. Fabian didn't drink the spiked champagne. When he sees a hot sexy smaller male he knows he has to protect him when the chaos breaks out. Magnus Duffy is a bird of paradise shifter he has a hatred of ogres that affects his very soul. An for good reason. Magnus also didn't drink the champagne either his got wasted. When they talk they find out that they live in the same city and they agree to date Fabian is a virgin because he has a large penis and the first time he tried to have sex the person backed out. These two try to leave the castle and they are mated. This was a good book that I liked. They agree to take it slow when Magnus finds out what type of shifter Fabian is and what his parents did he leaves him and it shacks up both of them. This was a good read. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I love reading this series.
I liked the characters in this book. I like how they were portrayed, especially during those times of insecurity and indecision. Normally I don't tolerate abuse of any kind in books, but I felt for both characters and I can understand where they were coming from in the heat of the moment. While it was still wrong of Fabian to hit Magnus, that doesn't take away from the fact that Magnus stormed into Fabian's aunt's house in a rage. Magnus put his hands on Aunt Jean. No matter that he just grabbed her, he still did it while in a rage. You can't know what someone will do in that situation. So while they were both wrong, the only way to move on would be to forgive each other.
Actually I have to admit to liking this created story. But I guess a lot would depend on main characters, which I actually liked. The storyline was fresh and romantic, at least as much we can get from this kind of series. Fabian and Magnus were an interesting couple. In general this story is easy and warm, which I enjoyed today.
***zaterdag 27 augustus 2022*** I know I've read this series before because once upon a time I was on binge and read almost everything by these authors. Like everything.
But I also didn't logged it back then and that is bugging me now so I'm adding them based on the one review I did wrote:Fur And Flightless by Joyee Flynn
Such a fun series! There are currently 20 books in the series, each book is written by either Joyee Flynn, Gabrielle Evans or Stormy Glenn. They could keep writing more as long as they continue creating interesting characters who shift into all kinds of wonderful and different animals/mythical beings and coming up with unique stories full of romance, crazy drama, angst and let's not forget the very hot sex!
You don't have to read them in order, very rarely are other characters mentioned, but each story is very different and engaging and together they make for a fun few weeks of entertainment.
There is a spin-off series by Joyee Flynn with 8 books out so far called "Unmated by Midnight." I have not read those yet but they are on my to-be-read list next.
An ogre? Really? Okay...not exactly kosher but I can get behind that after a little adjustment time, sure. But the dramatics? "I killed your parents because they killed mine" thing? Yeah...way too much specially combined with all the UPAC troubles brought along too. Way too weird and just plain depressing. I couldn't even see them as good for each other. Too many contradictions and problems and surely not enough time spent together besides sex. They talked briefly. They had sex. They talked briefly. They had sex. They talked briefly. They had sex...you get the picture. Yeah there was a lot of info dump and hysterics. Was it enough for them to know each other and fall in love? Highly unlikely and I simply wasn't convinced. Not this time.

Magnus was carrying a wicked heavy burden, so when he found out that his new mate, Fabian, had lied about not being an ogre, he was pretty upset. But I was not expecting the reason for that.
I love that Magnus is a dance instructor, and that his way of claiming his mate is to dance for him.
Got a little weird with the UPAC stepping in and trying to split them up but that all got cleared up pretty quickly. Luckily it was before Fabian had a complete meltdown.
Really like these two mates and glad things worked out for them.

This is yet another fun instalment to the Midnight Matings series and also another unlikely pairing, with the mating of a superb bird of paradise named Magnus Duffy and an ogre named Fabian Norris.
I thoroughly enjoin this book maybe a little more then others in this series.
I only had two problems with this book: 1- the usual grammatical and spelling errors I have come to expect from Siren Publishing ink, and 2- Did anyone else notice that the bird on the front cover is not a superb bird of paradise? A male superb bird of paradise is black with blue display feathers. That's all I'm saying.... Other than that it was a superb read.
There's certain creatures that you don't think of as attractive. Zombies and ogres probably top the list. Not anymore. In Fabian's world ogres aren't gross and smelly. Well maybe a little smelly but o oh when they shift. The rest of the time, they're just like the rest of us. A lot bigger but pretty much the same.
Magnus is a sexy little thing and pretty feisty. He was a good match for Fabian. Fabian was sweet. There's actually much more to him that you learn as you read further.
These guys are good together and the book is a fun read.
Written in 1st person which in never really a good start to a romance for me. I still can't figure out why this author changed her writing style. It's very disappointing.
No character building, no real drama, no real passion and very predictable.
The backstory of those two guys had lots of potential so I decided to give one of Joyee Flynn-S stories another try but I shouldn't have bothered. All the potential drama is smoothed over so quickly that it became a very boring read.
Awww...I really liked Shrek, I mean Fabian. He was so gentle and sweet, different than what his size would say. Then there's Magnus. He was interesting. What I want to know is who calls someone who breaks into their house a "goof"? No, put the asshole in his place.
I don't like it when someone lies about themselves. It makes me feel sick cos I know they're gonna get found out. I'm glad it happened early on in this so I wasn't nauseous for a long time.
Мне совершенно не нравится как пишет этот автор. Секс хочется пролистать, диалоги глупые, здоровые мужики рыдают без конца, события имеют тупые мотивы и оправдания. Глупость полнейшая.
This is the best midnight matings book I've read so far. It's the only one with real characters, plot and development. It's still a little jagged and the ending is a bit abrupt, but this gets four stars from me. I was pleasantly surprised by this.
